    Human tumour xenografts established and serially transplanted in mice immunologically deprived by thymectomy, cytosine arabinoside and whole-body irradiation.

    Mice immunologically deprived by thymectomy, cytosine arabinoside treatment and whole-body irradiation were used to study the growth of human tumours as xenografts. 10/16 melanoma biopsies, 4/13 ovarian carcinoma biopsies and 3/6 uterine cancer biopsies grew as serially transpllantable xenograft lines. The tumour lines were studied through serial passages by histology, histochemistry, electron microscopy, chromosome analysis, immune fluorescence, growth rate measurement and mitotic counts. They retained the characteristics of the tumours of origin, with the exception of loss of pigmentation in two melanomas, histological dedifferentiation in the uterine carcinomas, and increased mitotic frequency and growth rate in some melanomas. It was concluded that this type of animal preparation is as useful as alternative methods of immunological deprivation, or as athymic nude mice, for the growth of human tumour xenografts, at least for some experimental purposes

    Transport coefficients of multi-particle collision algorithms with velocity-dependent collision rules

    Detailed calculations of the transport coefficients of a recently introduced particle-based model for fluid dynamics with a non-ideal equation of state are presented. Excluded volume interactions are modeled by means of biased stochastic multiparticle collisions which depend on the local velocities and densities. Momentum and energy are exactly conserved locally. A general scheme to derive transport coefficients for such biased, velocity dependent collision rules is developed. Analytic expressions for the self-diffusion coefficient and the shear viscosity are obtained, and very good agreement is found with numerical results at small and large mean free paths. The viscosity turns out to be proportional to the square root of temperature, as in a real gas. In addition, the theoretical framework is applied to a two-component version of the model, and expressions for the viscosity and the difference in diffusion of the two species are given.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures, accepted by J.     Perturbative Analysis of Adaptive Smoothing Methods in Quantifying Large-Scale Structure

    Smoothing operation to make continuous density field from observed point-like distribution of galaxies is crucially important for topological or morphological analysis of the large-scale structure, such as, the genus statistics or the area statistics (equivalently the level crossing statistics). It has been pointed out that the adaptive smoothing filters are more efficient tools to resolve cosmic structures than the traditional spatially fixed filters. We study weakly nonlinear effects caused by two representative adaptive methods often used in smoothed hydrodynamical particle (SPH) simulations. Using framework of second-order perturbation theory, we calculate the generalized skewness parameters for the adaptive methods in the case of initially power-law fluctuations. Then we apply the multidimensional Edgeworth expansion method and investigate weakly nonlinear evolution of the genus statistics and the area statistics. Isodensity contour surfaces are often parameterized by the volume fraction of the regions above a given density threshold.     Dietary considerations in the evaluation and management of nocturia

    Aim: This narrative review investigates the effect of dietary intake on nocturnal voiding severity. The primary aims of this review are to provide a framework for future research and ultimately contribute to more comprehensive, lifestyle-centered guidelines for the management of nocturia. Methods: A literature search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords “nocturia”, “diuresis”, “natriuresis”, “food”, “diet”, and “nutrients”. Results: High fruit and vegetable consumption was negatively associated with nocturia. High intake of tea and dietary sodium showed a positive association with nocturia. Several foods have also been directly linked to changes in diuresis rate, glycemic control, and endogenous serum melatonin concentration, offering potential mechanisms for this observed effect. Overall quality of the evidence was low. Conclusion: At present, there is limited evidence to suggest that certain foods, electrolytes, and specific compounds may contribute to the pathogenesis of nocturia. A greater understanding of the impact of food and nutrients on body fluid metabolism is needed to further refine the evaluation and treatment of nocturia

    An optical implementation of the amplitude encoded double random phase encryption/decryption technique is implemented, and both numerical and experimental results are presented. In particular, we examine the effect of quantization in the decryption process due to the discrete values and quantized levels, which a spatial light modulator (SLM) can physically display. To do this, we characterize a transmissive SLM using Jones matrices and then map a complex image to the physically achievable levels of the SLM using the pseudorandom encoding technique. We present both numerical and experimental results that quantify the performance of the system

    Structural analysis, elemental profiling, and electrical characterization of HfO2 thin films deposited on In0.53Ga0.47As surfaces by atomic layer deposition

    In this work results are presented on the structural analysis, chemical composition, and interface state densities of HfO2 thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) from Hf[N(CH3)(2)](4) and H2O on In0.53Ga0.47As/InP substrates. The structural and chemical properties are investigated using high resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. HfO2 films (3-15 nm) deposited on In0.53Ga0.47As are studied following a range of surface treatments including in situ treatment of the In0.53Ga0.47As surface by H2S exposure at 50-350 degrees C immediately following the metal organic vapor phase epitaxy growth of the In0.53Ga0.47As layer, ex situ treatment with (NH4)(2)S, and deposition on the native oxides of In0.53Ga0.47As with no surface treatment. The structural analysis indicates that the In0.53Ga0.47As surface preparation prior to HfO2 film deposition influences the thickness of the HfO2 film and the interlayer oxide. The complete interfacial self-cleaning of the In(0.53)Gas(0.47)As native oxides is not observed using an ALD process based on the Hf[N(CH3)(2)](4) precursor and H2O. Elemental profiling of the HfO2/In0.53Ga0.47As interface region by electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals an interface oxide layer of 1-2 nm in thickness, which consists primarily of Ga oxides. Using a conductance method approximation, peak interface state densities in the range from 6 x 10(12) to 2 x 10(13) cm(-2) eV(-1) are estimated depending on the surface preparation.     Developmental and familial predictors of adult cognitive traits in the European starling

    In birds, there is evidence that adult cognitive traits can both run in families and be affected by early developmental influences. However, different studies use different cognitive tasks, which may not be measuring the same traits, and also focus on different developmental factors. We report results from a study in which we administered multiple cognitive tasks (autoshaping, discrimination learning, reversal learning, progressive ratio schedule, extinction learning and impulsivity) to a cohort of 34 European starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, for which several early developmental measures were available. The cohort consisted of siblings raised either apart or together, whose position in the size hierarchy of the rearing brood had been experimentally manipulated. We examined how the different cognitive measures covaried, the extent to which they ran in families, and which of the developmental factors predicted which of the cognitive outcomes. We found that discrimination and reversal learning speeds were positively correlated, as were breakpoint on the progressive ratio schedule and resistance to extinction. Otherwise, the cognitive measures were uncorrelated, suggesting that they reflected different underlying traits. All traits except discrimination and reversal learning speed ran in families to a substantial extent. Using a model selection approach, we found evidence that natal brood size and developmental telomere attrition (the extent to which the birds' erythrocyte telomeres shortened in early life, an integrative measure of developmental stress) were related to several adult cognitive measures. Results are discussed with respect to the best way of measuring avian cognitive abilities, and the utility of developmental telomere attrition as a predictor of adult outcomes

    Transgenic expression of the dicotyledonous pattern recognition receptor EFR in rice leads to ligand-dependent activation of defense responses

    Plant plasma membrane localized pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) detect extracellular pathogen-associated molecules. PRRs such as Arabidopsis EFR and rice XA21 are taxonomically restricted and are absent from most plant genomes. Here we show that rice plants expressing EFR or the chimeric receptor EFR::XA21, containing the EFR ectodomain and the XA21 intracellular domain, sense both Escherichia coli- and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo)-derived elf18 peptides at sub-nanomolar concentrations. Treatment of EFR and EFR::XA21 rice leaf tissue with elf18 leads to MAP kinase activation, reactive oxygen production and defense gene expression. Although expression of EFR does not lead to robust enhanced resistance to fully virulent Xoo isolates, it does lead to quantitatively enhanced resistance to weakly virulent Xoo isolates. EFR interacts with OsSERK2 and the XA21 binding protein 24 (XB24), two key components of the rice XA21-mediated immune response. Rice-EFR plants silenced for OsSERK2, or overexpressing rice XB24 are compromised in elf18-induced reactive oxygen production and defense gene expression indicating that these proteins are also important for EFR-mediated signaling in transgenic rice. Taken together, our results demonstrate the potential feasibility of enhancing disease resistance in rice and possibly other monocotyledonous crop species by expression of dicotyledonous PRRs. Our results also suggest that Arabidopsis EFR utilizes at least a subset of the known endogenous rice XA21 signaling components
