Cl electrosorption on Ag(100): Lateral interactions and electrosorption valency from comparison of Monte Carlo simulations with chronocoulometry experiments
We present Monte Carlo Simulations using an equilibrium lattice-gas model for
the electrosorption of Cl on Ag(100) single-crystal surfaces. Fitting the
simulated isotherms to chronocoulometry experiments, we extract parameters such
as the electrosorption valency gamma and the next-nearest-neighbor lateral
interaction energy phi_nnn. Both coverage-dependent and coverage independent
gamma were previously studied assuming a constant phi_nnn [I. Abou Hamad, Th.
Wandlowski, G. Brown, P.A. Rikvold, J. Electroanal. Chem. 554-555 (2003) 211].
Here, a self-consistent, entirely electrostatic picture of the lateral
interactions with a coverage-dependent phi_nnn is developed, and a relationship

Orbital correlations in the pseudo-cubic \emph{O} and rhombohedral -phases of LaMnO
The local and intermediate structure of stoichiometric LaMnO has been
studied in the pseudocubic and rhombohedral phases at high temperatures (300 to
1150 K). Neutron powder diffraction data were collected and a combined Rietveld
and high real space resolution atomic pair distribution function analysis
carried out. The nature of the Jahn-Teller (JT) transition around 750 K is
confirmed to be orbital order to disorder. In the high temperature orthorhombic
() and rhombohedral () phases the MnO octahedra are still fully
distorted locally. The data suggest the presence of local orbitally ordered
clusters of diameter \AA (four MnO octahedra) implying

A domain-specific language for the hybridization and static condensation of finite element methods
In this paper, we introduce a domain-specific language (DSL) for concisely expressing localized linear algebra on finite element tensors and its integration within a code-generation framework. This DSL is general enough to facilitate the automatic generation of element-based dense linear algebra kernels necessary for the implementation of static condensation methods and local solvers for a variety of problems. We demonstrate its use for the static condensation of continuous Galerkin problems, and systems arising from hybridizing finite element discretizations. We also describe how this DSL can be used to execute local post-processing procedures to construct superconvergent approximations to mixed problems. This work also features high-level implementations of static condensation and hybrid-mixed methods as preconditioners conforming to PETSc's interface for solving linear systems. These preconditioning interfaces provide reduced operators, which are obtained from locally assembled expressions, with the necessary context to specify full solver configurations on the resulting linear systems. We validate our implementations within the context of model second-order elliptic problems. Finally, we conclude with a performance comparison highlighting the use of a hybrid-mixed method as an efficient preconditioner in a semi-implicit method for the nonlinear rotating shallow water equations
Pregnancy is detected via odour in a wild cooperative breeder
Among mammals, scent has long been known to encode oestrus, however in many species detecting pregnancy may also be important in terms of both competition and mate-choice. Here we show, through odour presentation experiments, that pregnancy is discernible via scent by both sexes in the cooperatively breeding banded mongoose. Males spent more time investigating and were more likely to scent mark the odours of non-pregnant females, compared to pregnant females. Females showed increased levels of scent marking when odours were of the same reproductive state as themselves. These results present the first direct demonstration that pregnancy is detectable via scent in wild cooperative breeders. Detecting pregnancy may be particularly important in cooperative breeders as, in addition to the competition between males for receptive mates, there is also intense competition between females for access to alloparental care. Consequently, dominant females benefit from targeting reproductive suppression towards subordinates that represent direct threats, such as pregnant females
Local Structure of La1-xSrxCoO3 determined from EXAFS and neutron PDF studies
The combined local structure techniques, extended x-ray absorption fine
structure (EXAFS) and neutron pair distribution function analysis, have been
used for temperatures 4 <= T <= 330 K to rule out a large Jahn-Teller (JT)
distortion of the Co-O bond in La1-xSrxCoO3 for a significant fraction of Co
sites (x <= 0.35), indicating few, if any, JT-active, singly occupied e_g Co

Daily emollient during infancy for prevention of eczema: the BEEP randomised controlled trial.
BACKGROUND: Skin barrier dysfunction precedes eczema development. We tested whether daily use of emollient in the first year could prevent eczema in high-risk children. METHODS: We did a multicentre, pragmatic, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial in 12 hospitals and four primary care sites across the UK. Families were approached via antenatal or postnatal services for recruitment of term infants (at least 37 weeks' gestation) at high risk of developing eczema (ie, at least one first-degree relative with parent-reported eczema, allergic rhinitis, or asthma, diagnosed by a doctor). Term newborns with a family history of atopic disease were randomly assigned (1:1) to application of emollient daily (either Diprobase cream or DoubleBase gel) for the first year plus standard skin-care advice (emollient group) or standard skin-care advice only (control group). The randomisation schedule was created using computer-generated code (stratified by recruiting centre and number of first-degree relatives with atopic disease) and participants were assigned to groups using an internet-based randomisation system. The primary outcome was eczema at age 2 years (defined by UK working party criteria) with analysis as randomised regardless of adherence to allocation for participants with outcome data collected, and adjusting for stratification variables. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, ISRCTN21528841. Data collection for long-term follow-up is ongoing, but the trial is closed to recruitment. FINDINGS: 1394 newborns were randomly assigned to study groups between Nov 19, 2014, and Nov 18, 2016; 693 were assigned to the emollient group and 701 to the control group. Adherence in the emollient group was 88% (466 of 532) at 3 months, 82% (427 of 519) at 6 months, and 74% (375 of 506) at 12 months in those with complete questionnaire data. At age 2 years, eczema was present in 139 (23%) of 598 infants with outcome data collected in the emollient group and 150 (25%) of 612 infants in the control group (adjusted relative risk 0·95 [95% CI 0·78 to 1·16], p=0·61; adjusted risk difference -1·2% [-5·9 to 3·6]). Other eczema definitions supported the results of the primary analysis. Mean number of skin infections per child in year 1 was 0·23 (SD 0·68) in the emollient group versus 0·15 (0·46) in the control group; adjusted incidence rate ratio 1·55 (95% CI 1·15 to 2·09). INTERPRETATION: We found no evidence that daily emollient during the first year of life prevents eczema in high-risk children and some evidence to suggest an increased risk of skin infections. Our study shows that families with eczema, asthma, or allergic rhinitis should not use daily emollients to try and prevent eczema in their newborn. Measurement of the local Jahn-Teller distortion in LaMnO_3.006
The atomic pair distribution function (PDF) of stoichiometric LaMnO_3 has
been measured. This has been fit with a structural model to extract the local
Jahn-Teller distortion for an ideal Mn(3+)O_6 octahedron. These results are
compared to Rietveld refinements of the same data which give the average
structure. Since the local structure is being measured in the PDF there is no
assumption of long-range orbital order and the real, local, Jahn-Teller
distortion is measured directly. We find good agreement both with published
crystallographic results and our own Rietveld refinements suggesting that in an
accurately stoichiometric material there is long range orbital order as
expected. The local Jahn-Teller distortion has 2 short, 2 medium and 2 long

A Submillimeter Study of the Star-Forming Region NGC7129
New molecular (13CO J=3-2) and dust continuum (450 and 850 micron) SCUBA maps
of the NGC7129 star forming region are presented, complemented by C18O J=3-2
spectra at several positions within the mapped region. The maps include the
Herbig Ae/Be star LkHalpha 234, the far-infrared source NGC 7129 FIRS2 and
several other pre-stellar sources embedded within the molecular ridge.
The SCUBA maps help us understand the nature of the pre-main sequence stars
in this actively star forming region. A deeply embedded submillimeter source,
SMM2, not clearly seen in any earlier data set, is shown to be a pre-stellar
core or possibly a protostar. The highest continuum peak emission is identified
with the deeply embedded source IRS6, a few arcseconds away from LkHalpha 234,
and also responsible for both the optical jet and the molecular outflow. The
gas and dust masses are found to be consistent, suggesting little or no CO
depletion onto grains. The dust emissivity index is lower towards the dense
compact sources, beta ~1 - 1.6, and higher, beta ~ 2.0, in the surrounding
cloud, implying small size grains in the PDR ridge, whose mantles have been
evaporated by the intense UV radiation.Comment: Accepted by Ap
