PRODUCTIVITY SPILLOVERS IN INDIAN MANUFACTURING FIRMS

    Get PDF
Indian economic reform since early 1990s aims at improving productivity and competitiveness of major industries. The paper examines spillovers from foreign direct investment (FDI), research and development (R&D) and exporting activities on productivity both for foreign and domestic manufacturing firms. The data is obtained from the PROWESS database provided by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). Balanced panel of over 1,000 manufacturing firms in India between 1994 and 2006 are considered for our empirical analysis. Findings indicate that foreign presence has a significant spillover effect on the productivity of the Indian manufacturing firms compared to the alternative spillovers such as from R&D and export initiatives.Productivity, Spillovers, Indian manufacturing, FDI.

Advances in computer-aided crack length measurement during fatigue crack growth testing

    Get PDF
The accurate measurement of crack length is one of the most important aspect of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) testing. Of the various methods available for crack length measurement, compliance technique is very popular due to the facilities it provides for easy automation. In the compliance technique, compliance crack length (CCL) rela-tions are used for correlating the compliance, computed from measurements of displacements & loads during fatigue cycling, to the crack length contained in the specimen. CCL relations are specific not only to the specimen geometry, but also to the location on the specimen body at which displacements are measured. This specificness is not very conducive to the experimentalist as it introduces errors in the measured crack length if the location of displacement measurement is not accurately maintained. With variations in specimen geometry and size, the accu-rate positioning of displacement measurement transducers is not an easy task. In order to provide greater flexi-bility in the use of the compliance technique, a new scheme has been proposed in this paper. Modelling the defo-rmation of a fracture mechanics specimen during fatigue cycling as rotation of two rigid hinge about a hringe point, the relationship between the location of the hinge-point with crack length has been established using finite element analysis for the single-edge notched three point bend specimen. Further -an iterative method has been developed which can be implemented in the background software for on-line crack length measurement. It has been shown that the iterative method converges rapidly to give the crack length with high accuracy

Compliance crack length relations for the four-point bend specimen

    Get PDF
Compliance crack length relations for the four-point bend specimen geometry have not been reported in the literature in spite of this geometry being one of the popularly used specimens for fatigue crack growth studies. An effort has been made in the present work to fill this gap. Accordingly, the finite element technique was employed to simulate loading and calculate displacements at various locations in a four-point bend specimen. The load-displacement data thus obtained were processed to yield compliance crack length relations. These relations were employed to calculate the crack length during fatigue testing of four-point bend specimens in which the crack length was also measured by optical means. A good correlation was observed between the predicted crack length and that measured optically

Microstructural damage evaluation in Ni-based superalloy gas turbine blades by fractal analysis

    Get PDF
Ni-based superalloys are used as turbine disc and blade material in which creep, fatigue and creep-fatigue are the important damage mechanisms. Mechanical properties of these alloys depend upon the amounts of gamma-gamma-prime present in the microstructure as well as precipitation of carbides along the grain boundaries. The distribution of gamma-prime depends on the chemical composition, operating temperature and the length of service exposure. During service exposure, as damage accumulates progressively, the morphological characteristics of microstructure change which needs to be assessed using metallographic technique. Conventionally, the extent of damage resulting in deterioration of mechanical properties is quantified by hardness measurement. The variation in hardness is correlated with the morphological features in the metalographic images by identifying precipitation of carbides, presence of cuboidal gamma-prime and the structural changes that occur in the matrix. In this paper, we report fractal dimensions of the insitu metallographic images which can correlate the progressive damage accumulation at various locations of the blades

Photoluminescence of single colour defects in 50 nm diamond nanocrystals

We used optical confocal microscopy to study optical properties of diamond 50 nm nanocrystals first irradiated with an electron beam, then dispersed as a colloidal solution and finally deposited on a silica slide. At room temperature, under CW laser excitation at a wavelength of 514.5 nm we observed perfectly photostable single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) colour defects embedded in the nanocrystals. From the zero-phonon line around 575 nm in the spectrum of emitted light, we infer a neutral NV0 type of defect. Such nanoparticle with intrinsic fluorescence are highly promising for applications in biology where long-term emitting fluorescent bio-compatible nanoprobes are still missing.Comment: proceedings of ICDS 23 conference (23rd International Conference on Defects in Semiconductors, July 24 - July 29, 2005, Awaji Island, Hyogo, Japan); to appear in "Physica B

Charge transfer state emission dynamics in blue-emitting functionalized silicon nanocrystals

    Get PDF
We explore the dynamics of blue emission from dodecylamine and ammonia functionalized silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) with average diameters of ∼3 and ∼6 nm using time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy. The Si NCs exhibit nanosecond PL decay dynamics that is independent of NC size and uniform across the emission spectrum. The TRPL measurements reveal complete quenching of core state emission by a charge transfer state that is responsible for the blue PL with a radiative recombination rate of ∼5 × 10^7 s^(−1). A detailed picture of the charge transfer state emission dynamics in these functionalized Si NCs is proposed

The SilkSatDb (silkmoth microsatellite database) (http://www.cdfd.org.in/silksatdb) is a relational database of microsatellites extracted from the available expressed sequence tags and whole genome shotgun sequences of the silkmoth, Bombyx mori. The database has been rendered with a simple and robust web-based search facility, developed using PHP. The SilkSatDb also stores information on primers developed and validated in the laboratory. Users can retrieve information on the microsatellite and the protocols used, along with informative figures and polymorphism status of those microsatellites. In addition, the interface is coupled with Autoprimer, a primer-designing program, using which users can design primers for the loci of interest

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background:</p> <p>BPA (bisphenol A or 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-phenol)propane) is present in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, which can be used in impact-resistant safety equipment and baby bottles, as protective coatings inside metal food containers, and as composites and sealants in dentistry. Recently, attention has focused on the estrogen-like and carcinogenic adverse effects of BPA. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the cytotoxicity and apoptosis-inducing activity of this compound.</p> <p>Methods:</p> <p>Cell cycle, apoptosis and differentiation analyses; western blots.</p> <p>Results:</p> <p>BPA is able to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in three different acute myeloid leukemias. Although some granulocytic differentiation concomitantly occurred in NB4 cells upon BPA treatment, the major action was the induction of apoptosis. BPA mediated apoptosis was caspase dependent and occurred by activation of extrinsic and intrinsic cell death pathways modulating both FAS and TRAIL and by inducing BAD phosphorylation in NB4 cells. Finally, also non genomic actions such as the early decrease of both ERK and AKT phosphorylation were induced by BPA thus indicating that a complex intersection of regulations occur for the apoptotic action of BPA.</p> <p>Conclusion:</p> <p>BPA is able to induce apoptosis in leukemia cells via caspase activation and involvement of both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis.</p

Photoinduced 3D orientational order in side chain liquid crystalline azopolymers

We apply experimental technique based on the combination of methods dealing with principal refractive indices and absorption coefficients to study the photoinduced 3D orientational order in the films of liquid crystalline (LC) azopolymers. The technique is used to identify 3D orientational configurations of trans azobenzene chromophores and to characterize the degree of ordering in terms of order parameters. We study two types of LC azopolymers which form structures with preferred in-plane and out-of-plane alignment of azochromophores, correspondingly. Using irradiation with the polarized light of two different wavelengths we find that the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy can be dominated by either photo-reorientation or photoselection mechanisms depending on the wavelength. We formulate the phenomenological model describing the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy in terms of the isomer concentrations and the order parameter tensor. We present the numerical results for absorption coefficients that are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The model is also used to interpret the effect of changing the mechanism with the wavelength of the pumping light.Comment: uses revtex4 28 pages, 10 figure
