Jet quenching via jet collimation
The strong modifications of dijet properties in heavy ion collisions measured
by ATLAS and CMS provide important constraints on the dynamical mechanisms
underlying jet quenching. In this work, we show that the transport of soft
gluons away from the jet cone - jet collimation - can account for the observed
dijet asymmetry with values of that lie in the expected order of
magnitude. Further, we show that the energy loss attained through this
mechanism results in a very mild distortion of the azimuthal angle dijet

New physics searches with heavy-ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
This document summarises proposed searches for new physics accessible in the heavy-ion mode at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), both through hadronic and ultraperipheral γγ interactions, and that have a competitive or, even, unique discovery potential compared to standard proton-proton collision studies. Illustrative examples include searches for new particles - such as axion-like pseudoscalars, radions, magnetic monopoles, new long-lived particles, dark photons, and sexaquarks as dark matter candidates - as well as new interactions, such as nonlinear or non-commutative QED extensions. We argue that such interesting possibilities constitute a well-justified scientific motivation, complementing standard quark-gluon-plasma physics studies, to continue running with ions at the LHC after the Run-4, i.e. beyond 2030, including light and intermediate-mass ion species, accumulating nucleon-nucleon integrated luminosities in the accessible fb-1 range per month
A model for net-baryon rapidity distribution
In nuclear collisions, a sizable fraction of the available energy is carried
away by baryons. As the baryon number is conserved, the net-baryon
retains information on the energy-momentum carried by the incoming nuclei. A
simple and consistent model for net-baryon production in high energy
proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented. The basic
ingredients of the model are valence string formation based on standard PDFs
with QCD evolution and string fragmentation via the Schwinger mechanism. The
results of the model are presented and compared with data at different
centre-of-mass energies and centralities, as well as with existing models.
These results show that a good description of the main features of net-baryon
data is possible in the framework of a simplistic model, with the advantage of

Thermal Dileptons at LHC
We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb
collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using
in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body
theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon
Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes
over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated
open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN
This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on
the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its
physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts.
The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing,
accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief
illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies
on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in
deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision
QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed
to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated
luminosity of O(100) fb. It will become the cleanest high resolution
microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the
investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by
the LHC
The contribution of medium-modified color flow to jet quenching
Multiple interactions between parton showers and the surrounding QCD matter
are expected to underlie the strong medium-modifications of jet observables in
ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. Here, we note
that such jet-medium interactions alter generically and characteristically the
color correlations in the parton shower. We characterize these effects in a
color-differential calculation of the medium-induced gluon radiation spectrum
to first and second order in opacity. By interfacing simple branching histories
of medium-modified color flow with the Lund hadronization model, we analyze how
the medium modification of color correlations can affect the distribution of
hadronic fragments in jets. Importantly, we observe that jet-medium
interactions give rise to the medium-induced color decoherence of gluons from
the parton shower. Since hadronization respects color flow and since each color
singlet in a parton shower is hadronized separately, this medium-induced color
decoherence leaves characteristic signatures in the jet fragmentation pattern.
In particular, it can contribute to the quenching of leading hadron spectra.
Moreover, it can increase strongly the yield of soft hadronic fragments from a
jet, while the distribution of more energetic hadrons follows naturally the
shape of a vacuum-like fragmentation pattern of lower total energy
Occurrence and identification of risk areas of Ixodes ricinus-borne pathogens: a cost-effectiveness analysis in north-eastern Italy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Ixodes ricinus</it>, a competent vector of several pathogens, is the tick species most frequently reported to bite humans in Europe. The majority of human cases of Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) occur in the north-eastern region of Italy. The aims of this study were to detect the occurrence of endemic and emergent pathogens in north-eastern Italy using adult tick screening, and to identify areas at risk of pathogen transmission. Based on our results, different strategies for tick collection and pathogen screening and their relative costs were evaluated and discussed.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From 2006 to 2008 adult ticks were collected in 31 sites and molecularly screened for the detection of pathogens previously reported in the same area (i.e., LB agents, TBE virus, <it>Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia </it>spp., <it>Babesia </it>spp., "<it>Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis</it>"). Based on the results of this survey, three sampling strategies were evaluated <it>a</it>-<it>posteriori</it>, and the impact of each strategy on the final results and the overall cost reductions were analyzed. The strategies were as follows: tick collection throughout the year and testing of female ticks only (strategy A); collection from April to June and testing of all adult ticks (strategy B); collection from April to June and testing of female ticks only (strategy C).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eleven pathogens were detected in 77 out of 193 ticks collected in 14 sites. The most common microorganisms detected were <it>Borrelia burgdorferi </it>sensu lato (17.6%), <it>Rickettsia helvetica </it>(13.1%), and "<it>Ca. N. mikurensis</it>" (10.5%). Within the <it>B. burgdorferi </it>complex, four genotypes (i.e., <it>B. valaisiana, B. garinii, B. afzelii</it>, and <it>B. burgdorferi </it>sensu stricto) were found. Less prevalent pathogens included <it>R. monacensis </it>(3.7%), TBE virus (2.1%), <it>A. phagocytophilum </it>(1.5%), <it>Bartonella </it>spp. (1%), and <it>Babesia </it>EU1 (0.5%). Co-infections by more than one pathogen were diagnosed in 22% of infected ticks. The prevalences of infection assessed using the three alternative strategies were in accordance with the initial results, with 13, 11, and 10 out of 14 sites showing occurrence of at least one pathogen, respectively. The strategies A, B, and C proposed herein would allow to reduce the original costs of sampling and laboratory analyses by one third, half, and two thirds, respectively. Strategy B was demonstrated to represent the most cost-effective choice, offering a substantial reduction of costs, as well as reliable results.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Monitoring of tick-borne diseases is expensive, particularly in areas where several zoonotic pathogens co-occur. Cost-effectiveness studies can support the choice of the best monitoring strategy, which should take into account the ecology of the area under investigation, as well as the available budget.</p
