Incapacidades laborales : problemas en la reinserción al trabajo

    Get PDF
Se observa, así mismo, una discriminación laboral clara hacia las mujeres, a pesar del hecho que las mismas presentan iguales condiciones de edad o de nivel educativo que los hombresThis cross-sectional study was conducted on permanently disabled workers assisted by the Center for Occupational Rehabilitation (CRP) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, to evaluate factors associated with their chances of readmission into the labor market. A logistic model was used to investigate workers' acceptance into the professional rehabilitation program and their return into the market. The most decisive factors for their acceptance were age, presence of repetitive strain injury (RSI), and educational level. The most favorable situation was that of workers with RSI under 40 years of age and with average schooling (75.6%). Results showed that young male workers with high educational levels were the ones with the best chances of rejoining the market (90.9%). A controversial issue relates to workers' acceptance and program results. In order to be accepted, the worker had to display a given age and educational profile. Workers with RSI had this profile, but once accepted they were the ones with the greatest difficulty in rejoining the work force. In addition, discrimination against female workers was observed, despite their characteristics being similar to those of male

Sylvatic rabies and the perception of vampire bat activity in communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon

An outbreak of sylvatic rabies was reported in indigenous communities located in the Ecuadorian Amazon in November 2011. The objective of this study was to analyze family dwelling characteristics and other sociodemographic factors associated with the perception of an increase in hematophagous bat bites in humans and domestic animals to assist the implementation of intervention policies in the region. A total of 381 households from communities covered by the outbreak response activities were surveyed. Despite being associated with poorer dwelling conditions, the possession of domestic animals is associated with the perception of an increase in bat bites among animals. Better dwelling conditions, use of protective measures, access to electricity, and no domestic animals are variables associated with the perception of a rise in attacks on humans. The analysis of perceptions of bite frequency is fundamental to improve the effectiveness of vaccination programs and strategies to promote the adoption of preventive measures against rabies among the populationEn Ecuador se reportó un brote de rabia selvática en comunidades indígenas amazónicas en noviembre de 2011.

Study of waterborne polyurethane materials under aging treatments. Effect of the soft segment length

Coatings made of waterborne polyurethane dispersions are a promising alternative to solvent-borne ones but their mechanical and thermal properties under harsh outdoor conditions such as high temperature and humidity are somewhat limited. In this work saturated polyesters (PBA) with different molecular weights (800–2600 g/mol) were synthesized by reacting adipic acid with 1,4 butanediol. These polyols, an internal emulsifier, and an aliphatic diisocyanate were used as raw materials to synthesize polyurethane (PU) aqueous dispersions with solids contents of 29–38 wt%. The increase of the molecular weight of the polyol decreased the mean particle size of the PU dispersions from 308 to 78 nm. Polyurethane (PU) films were obtained by water evaporation of the PU dispersions and they were annealed at 80 °C for 2 h. Accelerated aging studies were performed by submerging the PU films in the water at 80 °C for 2 h. The PU films synthesized with the polyols with lower molecular weight exhibited enhanced phase miscibility, giving place to storage and loss moduli of similar magnitudes in a wide temperature range and they were less susceptible to hydrolytic degradation. Microphase miscibility was favored when shorter polyols are used. Contact angle measurement and cross-hatch adhesion test on PU coatings placed on stainless steel plate, before and after annealing and water aging were carried out. All PU coatings retained the adhesion to the substrate after aging, the PU coatings synthesized with shorter polyols exhibited enhanced adhesion. The authors thank the University of Antioquia for the “Estudiante Instructor” grant and to CODI for the economic and time support on the project 785 registered in the act 2018-19331

Targeted Therapies in Sarcomas: Challenging the Challenge

    Get PDF
Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal malignancies that very often lead to death. Nowadays, chemotherapy is the only available treatment for most sarcomas but there are few active drugs and clinical results still remain very poor. Thus, there is an imperious need to find new therapeutic alternatives in order to improve sarcoma patient's outcome. During the last years, there have been described a number of new molecular pathways that have allowed us to know more about cancer biology and tumorigenesis. Sarcomas are one of the tumors in which more advances have been made. Identification of specific chromosomal translocations, some important pathways characterization such as mTOR pathway or the insulin-like growth factor pathway, the stunning development in angiogenesis knowledge, and brand new agents like viruses have lead to the development of new therapeutic options with promising results. This paper makes an exhaustive review of preclinical and clinical evidence of the most recent targeted therapies in sarcomas and provides a future view of treatments that may lead to improve prognosis of patients affected with this disease

We initiate a series of publications on the flora of the province of Soria, Spain, which are previous to the review and reedition of the Floristic Catalogue of Soria (SEGURA & al., 2000), to incorporate 50 taxa corresponding to vascular plants which had not previously been recorded for the flora of province of Soria. Since the level of prospection in the Province is currently very high, these recent findings are all rare and scarce taxa in the province?s territorial context; some are peripheral or much localized, others are restricted to scarce environments and require them to be well preserved; in general, they show a presence extent very diffuse or fragmented in the Province. Another part are taxa recently described, commonly of a sub specific rank. All of them provide with an enlargement of their known distribution area, or with an improvement in their demarcation. Some floristic rarities and some regional novelties stand out, such as Beta maritima, Hippocrepis bourgaei or Lappula patula, besides other species that are very scarce, peripheral, relict or showing a fragmented area of distribution in the Province, such as Arbutus unedo, Hieracium prenanthoides, Gagea foliosa subsp. durieui or Hyacinthoides non-scripta

Tocilizumab for the treatment of adult-onset Still's disease

    Get PDF
Adult-onset Still´s disease (AOSD) is a systemic inflammatory condition that affects mainly young people. The clinical course consists of two distinctive patterns: one with a predominance of systemic symptoms and another manifested by progressive chronic polyarthritis. Glucocorticoids remain the mainstay in the treatment of AOSD. However, biologic therapies are often required to achieve clinical remission and allow glucocorticoid discontinuation. Areas covered: The review summarizes the main retrospective and prospective studies, and case series on the use of the anti-interleukin (IL)-6 receptor tocilizumab in AOSD. Expert opinion: Since IL-6 serum levels are highly increased in both active systemic and polyarticular phenotypes, IL-6 blockade was considered to be a plausible therapeutic option for the management of AOSD. Tocilizumab, the only anti-IL-6-receptor antagonist currently available for AOSD, has proved to be effective for the management of refractory AOSD patients, including those with life-threatening complications. Nevertheless, there are some reports describing patients who are refractory to any therapy. Future research should focus on the identification of prognostic biomarkers that help us to tailor an individualized treatment for each type of patient and in the search of new disease activity indices that help us to monitor the response to the therapy more closely

Influence of environmental factors in the in vitro dehydration of hydrogel and silicone hydrogel contact lenses

    Get PDF
Purpose: To analyze in vitro the influence of different environmental conditions on the dehydration pattern of seven currently marketed hydrogel (Hy) and silicone hydrogel (Si-Hy) contact lenses (CL). Methods: Three Hy and four Si-Hy CLs were evaluated. CLs were exposed to four different relative humidity (RH) conditions (5%, 30%, 50%, and 70%) and two air flow (AF) rates (0 and 2.75 m/seg) within an environmental chamber. Dehydration was assessed using the gravimetric method. Data were taken at baseline, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 minutes of exposure. Dehydration rate (DR), valid dehydration (VD) and stabilization time were calculated. Results: The interaction between RH, AF and the type of the CL material had a significant effect (p 0.03) on DR up to 60 minutes. The maximum differences in VD values among CL occurred around 15 minutes exposure varying from 25.16% to 42.75%. Stabilization time was quicker under the 5%RH with AF condition than under 70% RH without AF one for most CLs. Conclusions: Lower RH seems to increase CL dehydration being further accelerated with the AF presence. The dehydration pattern is material dependent, thus current marketed CLs behave differently under several controlled environmental conditions. Future in vivo studies should confirm these outcomes. The present study was partially supported by Junta Castilla y Leon (GR217 and VA145A11-2); by Junta de Castilla y Leon and European Social Fund (VA317-11); by Junta de Castilla y Leon and European Regional Development Fund (O22/12/VA/0112) and by Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad through Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnologico Industrial (IDI-2006-0676)
