Role of railway transport in tourism: Selected problems and examples in Slovakia

Get PDF
Transport is a very important part of activities in the tourism sector. In addition to the transport of tourists to and within a destination, transport itself can be a tourist attraction. The aim of this paper is to analyse selected problems of railways in Slovakia (a decrease in the importance of railways for passenger transport in Slovakia in the past 20 years, discontinued passenger transport on certain railway tracks and the modernisation of other tracks, and zero-fare public rail transport services for certain categories of passengers), and to present good examples of the use of narrow-gauge railways for the purposes of tourism (the Tatra Electric Railways and the Kysuce-Orava Forest Railway)

Lack of sleep is a common theme throughout college students’ lives. Additionally, college students report being dependent on caffeine to perform their best. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a link between how much caffeine students are using and how much sleep they are getting. The sample contained data from the 2011-2014 cohorts of the Spit for Science dataset. Both sleep and caffeine use data were collected at several points: first year fall semester (n=1799), third year spring semester (n=1918), and fourth year spring semester (n=859). Sleep data included the hours and minutes of sleep that students typically get per night. Caffeine use was asked by a simple yes or no “Do you drink any caffeinated beverages?” Independent sample t-tests were performed for each of the stated survey waves for caffeine use vs. the total hours of sleep of each cohort. The relationship between caffeine use and the total hours of sleep of the third year and fourth year spring surveys was found to be statistically significant (p=0.041 and p=0.034, respectively), with caffeine consumption related to decreased sleep. Additionally, linear regression was performed on both coffee and caffeinated soda use vs. total hours of sleep per week. Only first year fall semester (coffee) was found to be statistically significant (B= -0.514, p=\u3c0.01). Sleep is an important part of well being, so additional research is needed to figure out how students’ sleep cycles are being affected in relation to their caffeine consumption.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/uresposters/1215/thumbnail.jp

Sharing Science Gateway Artefacts Through Repositories

Get PDF
Researchers want to run scientific experiments focusing on their disciplines. They do not want to know how and where the experiments are executed. Science gateways hide details by coordinating the execution of experiments using different infrastructures and workflow systems. ER-flow/SHIWA and SCI-BUS project developed repositories to share artefacts such as applications, portlets, workflows, etc. inside and among research communities. Sharing artefacts in re-positories enable gateway developers to reuse them when building a new gateway and/or creating a new application

Buffer gas cooling and trapping of atoms with small magnetic moments

Buffer gas cooling was extended to trap atoms with small magnetic moment (mu). For mu greater than or equal to 3mu_B, 1e12 atoms were buffer gas cooled, trapped, and thermally isolated in ultra high vacuum with roughly unit efficiency. For mu < 3mu_B, the fraction of atoms remaining after full thermal isolation was limited by two processes: wind from the rapid removal of the buffer gas and desorbing helium films. In our current apparatus we trap atoms with mu greater than or equal to 1.1mu_B, and thermally isolate atoms with mu greater than or equal to 2mu_B. Extrapolation of our results combined with simulations of the loss processes indicate that it is possible to trap and evaporatively cool mu = 1mu_B atoms using buffer gas cooling.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY), https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Background: Cosmetic products are one of the fastest-growing segments of personal care products in the United States. One of the critical elements in the sales and growth of cosmetics is leveraging claims. Unlike pharmaceuticals in the US, claims in personal care products are usually not reviewed nor require regulatory approvals before products are sold in the US. However, regulatory agencies have no oversight of how the advertisement is presented to the consumers and have cited known companies and brands for promoting deceptive advertising and forcing costly market withdrawal, impacting the financial values of investors and customers' confidence alike. Objectives: We conducted a literature search and a survey. The literature search was to identify the current methodologies available for substantiating the advertisement of personal care products (including cosmetics). The survey was conducted with regulatory professionals aiming to understand the use of the current methodologies. Methods: The survey was developed and distributed to regulatory professionals in different capacities within the Cosmetic and Personal Care industry who had extensive experience constructing and substantiating advertising claims regulatory for cosmetic and personal care products. The questionnaire comprised 9 questions with socio-demographic characteristics and regulatory experience validating claims. Results: We received 63 responses from 1354 forms sent from regulatory professionals validating advertising claims. The results show that 85 % of the respondents use the FDA guidance while the remaining 15 % use in-house or other non-governmental guides. Moreover, 58 % use some Risk Benefit, while 42 % do not use it when evaluating claim substantiation. Conclusion: Although the respondents qualifying the claims possess the experience and technical knowledge of Cosmetic and Personal Care Products, the presently available standards used in the US are not designed to validate the substantiation of advertising claims. Therefore, there is a need to develop a more robust methodology for the evaluation of the validation and substantiation of advertising claims. A technique of using personal experiences is already approved and used for pharmaceutical products known as Personal Reported Outcomes (PRO). Leveraging the PRO techniques can help develop a “consumer reported outcome measure” (CROM) tool for claim substantiation validation for the advertising of cosmetic and personal care products. An overview about oxidation in clinical practice of skin aging

Get PDF
Free radicals are unstable chemical species, highly reactive, being formed by cellular entities of different tissues. Increased production of these species without proper effective action of endogenous and exogenous antioxidant systems, generates a condition of oxidative stress, potentially provider of skin disorders that extend from functional impairments (skin cancer, dermatitis, chronic and acute inflammatory processes) even aesthetic character, with the destruction of structural proteins and cellular changes with the appearance of stains, marks and lines of expressions and other signs inherent to the intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging process. The antioxidants are chemical substances commonly used in clinical practice for topical application and may contribute in the fight against the radical species responsible for many skin damage. This paper summarized the main evidence of the benefits brought by the topical application of antioxidants in the skin, considering the amplitude of the indicative performance of antioxidant activity by in vitro and ex-vivo tests as well as in vivo tests. It is recognized that a breadth of product performance tests should be explored to truly identify the effectiveness of antioxidant products for an anti-aging effect.Sao Paulo State Research Support FoundationNational Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq)Univ Campinas UNICAMP, Fed Univ Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Postgrad Program Translat Med, Campinas, SP, BrazilUniv RUTGERS, New Brunswick, NJ USAUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Med, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilRutgers State Univ, Dept Pharmaceut, Ernest Mario Sch Pharm, New Brunswick, NJ USAUniv Estadual Campinas UNICAMP, Fac Pharmaceut Sci, Campinas, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Med, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilFAPESP: 2013-01118-5Web of Scienc

ADHD in women - a review

Get PDF
Introduction: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) for many years has been thought to occur mainly in the male population. However, recent studies and change in professionals' perception allowed us to understand that there are significant differences between predominant features related to the gender of the affected person, which changes our look at how the condition may exhibit in women. Current state of knowledge: In this review, we provide a general look at the disorder, its characteristics in the young and adult population, differences in symptoms and finally - how it may prove difficult to diagnose this condition among women. Several factors that could contribute to development of ADHD were listed in literature, among them genetics, prenatal period, diet and parents’ emotional wellbeing. Concerning women, they are considered to internalize their psychological struggles, such as depression and stress more often than men, rendering them more susceptible toward suicidal behaviors and making diagnosis harder. Conclusions: When it comes to diagnosis in women, the main difficulty is that the symptoms are presented in a different way compared to men suffering from the same disorder. Because of those reasons, it’s harder to make a proper diagnosis. Therefore, further studies, taking account of affected one’s gender needs to be conducted, while medical professionals have to be more cautious
