    Effect of Slaughter Weight on Meat Quality of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromisniloticus)

    AbstractA total of 375 Nile tilapia was subdivided into three groups (125 fish/group), based on weight (600, 800 and 1200g, respectively). Fish were killed and analyzed for various traits describing meat characteristics. Data was subjected to analysis of variance. Protein percentage of the 600g weighing Nile tilapia was the highest (P<0.05). Fat percentage of the 1200g weighing Nile tilapia was higher than that of the 600g weighing animals (P<0.05). Drip loss percentage of the fillet of the 600g weighing Nile tilapia was the highest (P<0.05), whereas boiling loss percentage was the highest (P<0.05) in the 1200g heavy fish. TBARS value on days 0, 1, 3, 6 and 9 were not different (P>0.05) between groups. Shear force values of raw and cooked fillets were highest with the 1200g heavy fish (P<0.05. The total collagen content of the fillet of the 1200g weighing fish was highest (P<0.05). Flavor, juiciness, tenderness and acceptability ratings were lowest with fish weighing 600g (P<0.05). In conclusion, fat percentages and firmness were higher with increasing the slaughter weight. Also flavor was improved with higher slaughter weight. By modifying the slaughter weight, a certain target meat quality can be achieved

    THE CORRELATION OF MUSCLE FIBER AND PERIMYSIUM THICKNESS TO THE QUALITY OF TURKEY BREAST MEAT

    Turkey meat is one kind of poultry meat which gives contribute for consumer meat demand. Germany as a second exporter of turkey meat has always improving the quality of turkey meat. One of the important attribute which play main role in meat quality is tenderness. The objectives of the research were to measure of muscle fiber and perimysium of two male turkeys in particular amount then makes comparison of the measurement between them. Tracing identifying factors which have strong influence to the tenderness of turkey meat also was done. The data also supported by the values from pH, EC, color, drip loss, grill loss, and shear force. Hybrid XL and Big 6 as two lines of genetically turkeys was used in this study. They lines have different weight in part of carcass where Hybrid XL is bigger than Big 6. Concerning to the diameter of muscle fiber, Hybrid XL has smaller diameter than Big 6. The type of muscle fiber in turkey meat is II B. The analysis of the data was used software Statistic 10.0 ed. The results showed that pH value gives influences to the meat colour. L* would be increasing when pH value was decreasing and meat color turning pale. L* determined by amount of myoglobin inside of meat. The other factors were influenced each other concerning the tenderness of turkey meat. Big 6 breast meat has better tenderness quality and Hybrid XL meat was more profitable because they have heavier part of carcass. Diameter of muscle fiber has strongest factors than others

    This survey covers in our opinion the most important results in the theory of continuous selections of multivalued mappings (approximately) from 2002 through 2012. It extends and continues our previous such survey which appeared in Recent Progress in General Topology, II, which was published in 2002. In comparison, our present survey considers more restricted and specific areas of mathematics. Note that we do not consider the theory of selectors (i.e. continuous choices of elements from subsets of topological spaces) since this topics is covered by another survey in this volume

    Measurement of spin correlation in ttbar production using a matrix element approach

    correlation, assuming that the spin of the top quark is either correlated with the spin of the anti-top quark as predicted by the standard model or is uncorrelated. For the first time we use a matrix-element-based approach to study ttbar spin correlation. We use {ttbar -> W+bW-bbar ->l+nubl-nub} final states produced in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, where l denotes an electron or a muon. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 and were collected with the dzero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The result agrees with the standard model prediction.     Regaining momentum for international climate policy beyond Copenhagen

    The 'Copenhagen Accord' fails to deliver the political framework for a fair, ambitious and legally-binding international climate agreement beyond 2012. The current climate policy regime dynamics are insufficient to reflect the realities of topical complexity, actor coalitions, as well as financial, legal and institutional challenges in the light of extreme time constraints to avoid 'dangerous' climate change of more than 2°C. In this paper we analyze these stumbling blocks for international climate policy and discuss alternatives in order to regain momentum for future negotiations

    Anthoceros genomes illuminate the origin of land plants and the unique biology of hornworts

    Hornworts comprise a bryophyte lineage that diverged from other extant land plants >400 million years ago and bears unique biological features, including a distinct sporophyte architecture, cyanobacterial symbiosis and a pyrenoid-based carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM). Here, we provide three high-quality genomes of Anthoceros hornworts. Phylogenomic analyses place hornworts as a sister clade to liverworts plus mosses with high support. The Anthoceros genomes lack repeat-dense centromeres as well as whole-genome duplication, and contain a limited transcription factor repertoire. Several genes involved in angiosperm meristem and stomatal function are conserved in Anthoceros and upregulated during sporophyte development, suggesting possible homologies at the genetic level. We identified candidate genes involved in cyanobacterial symbiosis and found that LCIB, a Chlamydomonas CCM gene, is present in hornworts but absent in other plant lineages, implying a possible conserved role in CCM function. We anticipate that these hornwort genomes will serve as essential references for future hornwort research and comparative studies across land plants.</p

    Musculoskeletal Response to Whole-Body Vibration During Fracture Healing in Intact and Ovariectomized Rats

    This study investigated the effect of vibration on bone healing and muscle in intact and ovariectomized rats. Thirty ovariectomized (at 3 months of age) and 30 intact 5-month old female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent bilateral metaphyseal osteotomy of tibia. Five days later, half of the ovariectomized and of the intact rats were exposed to whole-body vertical vibration (90 Hz, 0.5 mm, 4 × g acceleration) for 15 min twice a day during 30 days. The other animals did not undergo vibration. After decapitation of rats, one tibia was used for computed tomographic, biomechanical, and histological analyses; the other was used for gene expression analyses of alkaline phosphatase (Alp), osteocalcin (Oc), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 1, and insulinlike growth factor 1. Serum Alp and Oc were measured. Mitochondrial activity, fiber area and distribution, and capillary densities were analyzed in M. gastrocnemius and M. longissimus. We found that vibration had no effect on body weight and food intake, but it improved cortical and callus densities (97 vs. 99%, 72 vs. 81%), trabecular structure (9 vs. 14 trabecular nodes), blood supply (1.7 vs. 2.1 capillaries/fiber), and oxidative metabolism (17 vs. 23 pmol O2/s/mg) in ovariectomized rats. Vibration generally increased muscle fiber size. Tibia biomechanical properties were diminished after vibration. Oc gene expression was higher in vibrated rats. Serum Alp was increased in ovariectomized rats. In ovariectomized rats, vibration resulted in an earlier bridging; in intact rats, callus bridging occurred later after vibration. The chosen vibration regimen (90 Hz, 0.5 mm, 4 × g acceleration, 15 min twice a day) was effective in improving musculoskeletal tissues in ovariectomized rats but was not optimal for fracture healing

    Thirty years of academic and critical scholarship on the subject of gay porn have born witness to significant changes not only in the kinds of porn produced for, and watched by, gay men, but in the modes of production and distribution of that porn, and the legal, economic and social contexts in which it has been made, sold/shared, and watched. Those thirty years have also seen a huge shift in the cultural and political position of gay men, especially in the US and UK, and other apparently ‘advanced’ democracies. Those thirty years of scholarship on the topic of gay porn have produced one striking consensus, which is that gay cultures are especially ‘pornified’: porn has arguably offered gay men not only homoerotic visibility, but a heritage culture and a radical aesthetic. However, neoliberal cultures have transformed the operation and meaning of sexuality, installing new standards of performativity and display, and new responsibilities attached to a ‘democratisation’ that offers women and men apparently expanded terms for articulating both their gender and their sexuality. Does gay porn still have the same urgency in this context? At the level of politics and cultural dissent, what’s ‘gay’ about gay porn now? This essay questions the extent to which processes of legal and social liberalization, and the emergence of networked and digital cultures, have foreclosed or expanded the apparently liberationary opportunities of gay porn. The essay attempts to map some of the political implications of the ‘pornification’ of gay culture on to ongoing debates about materiality, labour and the entrepreneurial subject by analyzing gay porn blogs
