Temptation, horizontal differentiation and monopoly pricing

We study the implications for pricing strategies and product offerings of consumers’ temptation when the differentiation of the product is horizontal. With horizontal differentiation, the temptation state is represented by a change in the consumers’ ideal product on the Hotelling line, so that consumers have two (possibly distinct) ideal products: one when committed and another when tempted. The firm faces the following trade-off: for the consumer who diverge the most between the ideal product with temptation and commitment, if the firm positions a product close to the consumer’s temptation ideal product, it increases the consumer’s surplus when tempted but decreases surplus with commitment, which lowers the consumer’s incentive to participate. This paper shows that, because of this trade-off, the firm may exclude products that are too close to the temptation preferences in the optimal menu. El artículo habla de la renuncia a la jurisdicción sobre las basílicas de San Francisco de Asís y de Santa María de los Ángeles por el Papa Benedicto XVI, anunciada en una Carta apostólica. Las dos basílicas, que previamente estaban bajo la jurisdicción del Romano Pontífice, ahora estarán bajo el control del Obispo de Asís-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino. Este cambio se debe a la necesidad de crear una organización más eficaz para ayudar el desarrollo de las dos iglesias

Evaluación de los principales sistemas de estructuras de apoyo en energía eólica marina. Retos y requerimientos tecnológicos para el año 2020

Offshore wind energy is one of the most promising technologies that the society has to provide an adequate response to our current energy demand. Within the cost drivers of this technology, support structures account for an important share of the total investments costs. Based mainly on technology from the oil & gas industry, there are currently in the market different support structure concepts which intent to achieve a satisfactory outcome to the changeable operational conditions and to help making this energy more cost effective. Among these concepts, some have a higher representation in the market. In occasions, this difference is due to a longer application history, however, greater adaptability to varying conditions or simply a more advantageous technological solutions may be other causes. One way or another, the offshore wind support structure business continues to renew itself and new concepts and ideas keep on turning up. Thus, the question of which support structure is the most preferable to succeed in the future still remains in the air. Through a method of technological assessment, this thesis introduces considerations for offshore wind support structures according to the challenges and technological requirements that will affect the development of the industry in the year 2020 and beyond. Applying a Delphi survey and throughout the opinion of independent experts, the thesis initially identify the most likely scenarios by that time and then, it compares the convenience of current offshore wind support structures to overcome them. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________La energía eólica marina es una de las tecnologías más prometedoras con la que nuestra sociedad cuenta para poder dar respuesta a la actual demanda energética. Dentro de los principales costes en el desarrollo de esta energía, el coste asociado a las estructuras de apoyo es uno de los que tiene un mayor peso. Las estructuras de apoyo de los aerogeneradores marinos se basan fundamentalmente en las investigaciones y desarrollos de la industria petrolera. En la actualidad existen diferentes soluciones que intentar lograr el resultado más satisfactorio en función de las condiciones operativas cambiantes y ayudar con ello a abaratar el coste toral de la energía. La representación de los diferentes tipos de estructuras de apoyo en el mercado actual presenta importantes diferencias entre unas soluciones y otras. En algunas casos esta desviación se asocia a la mayor madurez de una solución tecnológica frente a otra, sin embargo, una mayor adaptabilidad a las diferentes condiciones ambientales o mejores ventajas en el aprovechamiento energético pueden ser identificadas como otras causas. De una forma y otra, el desarrollo de estructuras de apoyo para aerogeneradores eólicos se encuentra en constante evolución y nuevos conceptos e ideas continúan llegando actualmente al mercado. Por estas razones, la idea acerca de cuál será el tipo de estructura de apoyo con mayor probabilidad de prevalecer en el futuro continúa estando todavía en el aire. A través de un de método de evaluación tecnológica, este proyecto fin de carrera introduce consideraciones para el desarrollo de estructuras de apoyo de energía eólica marina en función de los principales desafíos y necesidades tecnológicas que afectarán la evolución de la industria del año 2020 en adelante. Aplicando un estudio de investigación Delphi y gracias a la opinión de expertos independientes, este proyecto fin de carrera identifica inicialmente los escenarios más probables de ocurrir en esas fechas y, a continuación, compara la conveniencia o no de las actuales estructuras de apoyo para poder superarlos con exito.Ingeniería Industria

El arte de la guerra y la guerra del arte: literatura patriótica y estrategia militar en Über das Marionettentheater

La radicalización del ambiente cultural en Berlín tras la derrota de Auerstädt generó, por un lado, una fuerte corriente patriótica en la literatura alemana, por el otro un cuestionamiento de la doctrina militar prusiana clásica. El objetivo del presente trabajo es mostrar la influencia de las teorías de Clausewitz en Über das Marionettentheater como un ejemplo característico de la confluencia entre literatura, política y pensamiento militar.. El modo en que ambos autores emplean el concepto Schwerpunkt como metáfora permite iluminar la relación entre Clausewitz, el más influeyente estratega de este periodo y Kleist, el escritor que explotó el valor estético de la guerra.The political radicalization of the cultural environment in Berlin after the defeat of Auerstädt generated a strong patriotic trend in German literature, but also led to a re-evaluation of the classical Prussian military doctrine. This article aims at showing the influence of Clausewitz theories on Über das Marionettentheater as a characteristic example of the confluence between literature, politics, and military thought. An analysis of the way both authors employ the concept Schwerpunkt as a metaphor will help to illuminate the relationship between Clausewitz, the most influent strategist of this period, and Kleist, the writer who exploited the aesthetic value of war

Make it challenging : motivation through goal setting

We study a principal agent model where agents derive a sense of pride when accomplishing production goals. As in classical models, the principal offers a pay-per-performance wage to the agent, determining the agent’s extrinsic incentives. However, in our setting, the principal does also want to set goals that affect the agents’ intrinsic motivation to work. Agents differ in their personal standard which determines what becomes challenging and rewarding to them, and hence the intensity of their intrinsic motivation to achieve goals. We show that, at the optimal contract, the agents’ production, as well as the goals set by the principal, increase with the agents’ personal standards. Thus, although goal setting is payoff irrelevant, since it does not directly affect agents’ wage, it increases agents’ achievement and hence the principal’s profits. La Novelle en la tradición teórica del siglo XIX

La teoría de la Novelle del siglo XIX se reduce a un conjunto de testimonios fragmentarios y contradictorios de los que es imposible deducir una definición coherente y acabada del género. El autor defiende sin embargo la existencia de un denominador común entre las diferentes aportaciones teóricas de esta época que se evidencia, no en el sentido concedido al término genérico sino más bien en el modo de emplearlo. En las principales aproximaciones teóricas del XIX, el término “Novele” designa simultaneamente el ideal artístico en que cada autor cifra el último objetivo del género y un tipo de menor valía más cercano a la producción narrativa de su tiempo. Este uso del nombre genérico priva a las definiciones clásicas de todo valor descriptivo y coinstituye el auténtico elemento diferencial de la Novelle respecto a los tradicionalmente denominados “géneros históricos”.The 19th century theory of the 'Novelle' comes down to a group of fragmentary and contradictory testimonies from which it is impossible to infer a coherent and final definition of the genre. The author advocates, nevertheless, for the existence of a common element shared by the different theoretical contributions of this period which manifests itself, not in the sense attributed to the generic term, but rather in the way of making use of it. In the main theoretical approaches of the 19th century, the term 'Novelle' designates simultaneously the artistic ideal according to which every author encodes the ultimate goal of the genre and a type closer to the reality of the narrative production of his time. This use of the generic term deprives the classical definitions of all their descriptive function and constitutes the authentic differential element of the 'Novelle' regarding the traditionally named 'historical genres
