    Search for the decay K+π+ννˉK^+\to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu in the momentum region Pπ<195 MeV/cP_\pi < 195 {\rm ~MeV/c}

    We have searched for the decay K+π+ννˉK^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu in the kinematic region with pion momentum below the K+π+π0K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 peak. One event was observed, consistent with the background estimate of 0.73±0.180.73\pm 0.18. This implies an upper limit on B(K+π+ννˉ)<4.2×109B(K^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu)< 4.2\times 10^{-9} (90% C.L.), consistent with the recently measured branching ratio of (1.570.82+1.75)×1010(1.57^{+1.75}_{-0.82}) \times 10^{-10}, obtained using the standard model spectrum and the kinematic region above the K+π+π0K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 peak. The same data were used to search for K+π+X0K^+ \to \pi^+ X^0, where X0X^0 is a weakly interacting neutral particle or system of particles with 150<MX0<250 MeV/c2150 < M_{X^0} < 250 {\rm ~MeV/c^2}.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Depth analysis of fatty acids in two caribbean reef corals

    Full text link
    Total fatty acid compositions of colonies of two hermatypic, reef-building corals collected during the day-time over a depth range of 21 m were determined to assess the effect of depth-related environmental factors upon the lipid content of these organisms. No systematic changes were found, suggesting a steady-state balance between algal and animal lipogenesis in these symbiotic partnerships. Stephanocoenia michelinii , a day and night feeder, contained lipids indicative of external dietary sources such as copepods, whereas Montastrea annularis , a night feeder, did not.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/46632/1/227_2004_Article_BF00391131.pd

    Further search for the decay K+π+ννˉK^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar \nu in the momentum region P < 195 MeV/c

    Full text link
    We report the results of a search for the decay K+π+ννˉK^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar \nu in the kinematic region with π+\pi^+ momentum 140<P<195140 < P < 195 MeV/c using the data collected by the E787 experiment at BNL. No events were observed. When combined with our previous search in this region, one candidate event with an expected background of 1.22±0.241.22 \pm 0.24 events results in a 90% C.L. upper limit of 2.2×1092.2 \times 10^{-9} on the branching ratio of K+π+ννˉK^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar \nu. We also report improved limits on the rates of K+π+X0K^+ \to \pi^+ X^0 and K+π+X1X2K^+ \to \pi^+ X^1 X^2 where X0,X1,X2X^0, X^1, X^2 are hypothetical, massless, long-lived neutral particles.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Mendelian randomization supports bidirectional causality between telomere length and clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential

    Human genetic studies support an inverse causal relationship between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and coronary artery disease (CAD), but directionally mixed effects for LTL and diverse malignancies. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), characterized by expansion of hematopoietic cells bearing leukemogenic mutations, predisposes both hematologic malignancy and CAD. TERT (which encodes telomerase reverse transcriptase) is the most significantly associated germline locus for CHIP in genome-wide association studies. Here, we investigated the relationship between CHIP, LTL, and CAD in the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (n = 63,302) and UK Biobank (n = 47,080). Bidirectional Mendelian randomization studies were consistent with longer genetically imputed LTL increasing propensity to develop CHIP, but CHIP then, in turn, hastens to shorten measured LTL (mLTL). We also demonstrated evidence of modest mediation between CHIP and CAD by mLTL. Our data promote an understanding of potential causal relationships across CHIP and LTL toward prevention of CAD

    The global network of gravitational-wave observatories now includes five detectors, namely LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO 600. These detectors collected data during their third observing run, O3, composed of three phases: O3a starting in 2019 April and lasting six months, O3b starting in 2019 November and lasting five months, and O3GK starting in 2020 April and lasting two weeks. In this paper we describe these data and various other science products that can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at https://gwosc.org. The main data set, consisting of the gravitational-wave strain time series that contains the astrophysical signals, is released together with supporting data useful for their analysis and documentation, tutorials, as well as analysis software packages

    A Meta-analysis of Brief Personalized Feedback Interventions for Problematic Gambling

    No full text
    Personal Feedback Interventions (PFIs) have been widely used to reduce the amount of time and money individuals spend on gambling. A central component of these interventions is personalized information about an individual\u27s gambling behavior, often in comparison to others\u27 gambling. The purpose of the present review and meta-analysis was to evaluate these interventions in terms of content, mode of delivery, target sample, and efficacy. Sixteen interventions from 11 studies were reviewed. We found a small, statistically significant effect in favor of PFIs versus control (d = 0.20, 95% CI 0.12, 0.27). Six moderators of intervention efficacy were explored. These interventions appeared to be most efficacious when used in populations of greater gambling severity, when individuals were provided with gambling-related educational information, and when used in conjunction with motivational interviewing. Factors associated with reduced efficacy include in-person delivery of feedback without motivational-interviewing and informing participants of their score on a psychological measure of gambling severity. Efficacy did not vary as a function of college or community samples. PFIs are a low cost, easily disseminated intervention that can be used as a harm-reduction strategy. However, more substantial effects may be attained if used as part of a larger course of therapy
