    Effect of coil charge duration on combustion variability and flame morphology in a GDI engine working in lean burn conditions

    Spark ignition (SI) and subsequent flame front development exert a significant influence on cyclic variability of internal combustion engines (ICEs). The increasing exploitation of lean air-fuel mixtures in SI engines to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions is driving the scientific community towards the search for innovative combustion strategies. Moreover, although lean combustion has been widely investigated and an important number of studies is already present in literature, the high cyclic variability typical of this combustion process still represents a major hinder to its exploitation. This study aims to investigate the effects of increasing ignition energy on combustion characteristics of lean mixtures. Tests were performed on an optically accessible gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine that allowed to investigate the correlation between the thermodynamic results and spark arc-flame morphology. Engine speed was fixed at 2000 rpm, a relative air fuel ratio (AFRrel) of about 1.3 was selected and ignition timing was set at 12 crank angle degrees (CAD) bTDC. Coil charge duration was swept from 10 to 40 CAD. Two intake pressure levels were investigated, the first corresponding to wide open throttle under naturally aspirated operating mode, the second with an intake pressure of 1.2 bar, thus corresponding to a boosted operating condition. Two dedicated scripts built using NI Vision were employed for image processing, allowing the evaluation of temporal and spatial evolution of the early stages of combustion. Arc elongation and flame front contour were used as correlation parameters that characterize flame kernel inception and development. The results confirm that, as expected, the increase of the coil charge duration tends to reduce cyclic variability in terms of engine output. The optical investigations revealed that for both examined cases the standard deviation related to the wrinkling effect on flame edge at CA5 decreased as the coil charge duration increased

    Preliminary results of phase II study of capecitabine and gemcitabine (CAP-GEM) in patients with metastatic pretreated thymic epithelial tumors (TETs)

    Background: No previous prospective trials have been reported with capecitabine and gemcitabine (CAP-GEM) in patients with metastatic thymic epithelial tumors (TETs). We conducted a multicenter study to determine the activity and tolerability of this regimen in pretreated TETs. Patients and methods: A total of 15 patients were enrolled in the first stage of phase II study. All patients received CAP-GEM every 3 weeks. The primary end point was objective response rate (RR); secondary end points were toxicity, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival. Results: Complete responses (CR) and partial responses were observed in three (20%) and three (20%) patients for a 40% RR, respectively. Grade 1-2 neutropenia, anemia and thrombocytopenia were the most common side-effects, noted in seven (46.7%), five (33.3%) and five (33.3%) patients, respectively. The most common grade 3 toxicity was neutropenia in three patients (20%). Median PFS was 11 months (95% confidence interval 4-17). The 1- and 2-year survival rates were 80% and 67%, respectively. Conclusion: We have decided to publish the preliminary results because this regimen was more active than that expected. Although our results are preliminary, CAP-GEM shows activity and safety in pretreated TETs. Furthermore, multicenter trials, also in first-line setting, are necessary to confirm our results

    The Human Cytomegalovirus UL116 Glycoprotein Is a Chaperone to Control gH-Based Complexes Levels on Virions

    Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) relies in large part upon the viral membrane fusion glycoprotein B and two alternative gH/gL complexes, gH/gL/gO (Trimer) and gH/gL/UL128/UL130/UL131A (Pentamer) to enter into cells. The relative amounts of Trimer and Pentamer vary among HCMV strains and contribute to differences in cell tropism. Although the viral ER resident protein UL148 has been shown to interact with gH to facilitate gO incorporation, the mechanisms that favor the assembly and maturation of one complex over another remain poorly understood. HCMV virions also contain an alternative non-disulfide bound heterodimer comprised of gH and UL116 whose function remains unknown. Here, we show that disruption of HCMV gene UL116 causes infectivity defects of ∌10-fold relative to wild-type virus and leads to reduced expression of both gH/gL complexes in virions. Furthermore, gH that is not covalently bound to other viral glycoproteins, which are readily detected in wild-type HCMV virions, become undetectable in the absence of UL116 suggesting that the gH/UL116 complex is abundant in virions. We find evidence that UL116 and UL148 interact during infection indicating that the two proteins might cooperate to regulate the abundance of HCMV gH complexes. Altogether, these results are consistent with a role of UL116 as a chaperone for gH during the assembly and maturation of gH complexes in infected cells

    Not Just Asking Questions: Effects of Implicit and Explicit Conspiracy Information About Vaccines and Genetic Modification

The final version is available from Taylor & Francis (Routledge) via the DOI in this record.While conspiracy ideation has attracted overdue attention from social scientists in recent years, little work focuses on how different pro-conspiracy messages affect the take-up of conspiracy beliefs. In this study, we compare the effect of explicit and implicit conspiracy cues on the adoption of conspiracy beliefs. We also examine whether corrective information can undo conspiracy cues, and whether there are differences in the effectiveness of corrective information based on whether a respondent received an explicit or implicit conspiracy cue. We examine these questions using a real-world but low-salience conspiracy theory concerning Zika, GM mosquitoes, and vaccines. Using a preregistered experiment (N = 1018: https://osf.io/hj2pw/), we find that both explicit and implicit conspiracy cues increase conspiracy beliefs, but in both cases corrections are generally effective. We also find reception of an explicit conspiracy cue and its correction is conditional on feelings toward the media and pharmaceutical companies. Finally, we find that examining open-ended conspiracy belief items reveals similar patterns, but with a few key differences. These findings have implications for how news media cover controversial public health issues going forward.European Research Counci

    Quality control for more reliable integration of deep learning-based image segmentation into medical workflows

    Machine learning algorithms underpin modern diagnostic-aiding software, whichhas proved valuable in clinical practice, particularly in radiology. However,inaccuracies, mainly due to the limited availability of clinical samples fortraining these algorithms, hamper their wider applicability, acceptance, andrecognition amongst clinicians. We present an analysis of state-of-the-artautomatic quality control (QC) approaches that can be implemented within thesealgorithms to estimate the certainty of their outputs. We validated the mostpromising approaches on a brain image segmentation task identifying whitematter hyperintensities (WMH) in magnetic resonance imaging data. WMH are acorrelate of small vessel disease common in mid-to-late adulthood and areparticularly challenging to segment due to their varied size, anddistributional patterns. Our results show that the aggregation of uncertaintyand Dice prediction were most effective in failure detection for this task.Both methods independently improved mean Dice from 0.82 to 0.84. Our workreveals how QC methods can help to detect failed segmentation cases andtherefore make automatic segmentation more reliable and suitable for clinicalpractice.<br

    A system of semi-discrete coupled nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equations is studied. To show the complete integrability of the model with multiple components, we extend the discrete version of the inverse scattering method for the single-component discrete nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation proposed by Ablowitz and Ladik. By means of the extension, the initial-value problem of the model is solved.     Moraxella catarrhalis evades neutrophil oxidative stress responses providing a safer niche for nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae

    Moraxella catarrhalis and nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) are pathogenic bacteria frequently associated with exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), whose hallmark is inflammatory oxidative stress. Neutrophils produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can boost antimicrobial response by promoting neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) and autophagy. Here, we showed that M. catarrhalis induces less ROS and NET production in differentiated HL-60 cells compared to NTHi. It is also able to actively interfere with these responses in chemically activated cells in a phagocytosis and opsonin-independent and contact-dependent manner, possibly by engaging host immunosuppressive receptors. M. catarrhalis subverts the autophagic pathway of the phagocytic cells and survives intracellularly. It also promotes the survival of NTHi which is otherwise susceptible to the host antimicrobial arsenal. In-depth understanding of the immune evasion strategies exploited by these two human pathogens could suggest medical interventions to tackle COPD and potentially other diseases in which they co-exist

    A deficit of spatial remapping in constructional apraxia after right-hemisphere stroke

It is a common disorder after right parietal stroke, often persisting after initial problems such as visuospatial neglect have resolved. However, there has been very little experimental investigation regarding mechanisms that might contribute to the syndrome. Here, we examined whether a key deficit might be failure to integrate visual information correctly from one fixation to the next. Specifically, we tested whether this deficit might concern remapping of spatial locations across saccades. Right-hemisphere stroke patients with constructional apraxia were compared to patients without constructional problems and neurologically healthy controls. Participants judged whether a pattern shifted position (spatial task) or changed in pattern (non-spatial task) across two saccades, compared to a control condition with an equivalent delay but without intervening eye movements. Patients with constructional apraxia were found to be significantly impaired in position judgements with intervening saccades, particularly when the first saccade of the sequence was to the right. The importance of these remapping deficits in constructional apraxia was confirmed through a highly significant correlation between saccade task performance and constructional impairment on standard neuropsychological tasks. A second study revealed that even single saccades to the right can impair constructional apraxia patients’ perception of location shifts. These data are consistent with the view that rightward eye movements result in loss of remembered spatial information from previous fixations, presumably due to constructional apraxia patients’ damage to the right-hemisphere regions involved in remapping locations across saccades.     Levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel infusion and weight loss in Parkinson&apos;s disease

    © 2018 EANBackground and purpose: Weight loss (WL) is a frequent yet under-recognized complication of levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) infusion, as well as a milestone of Parkinson's disease (PD) disability progression. The complex association between WL, poor nutritional status, motor complications and PD progression, however, remains unclear. Methods: Consecutive consenting patients with PD treated with LCIG (n = 44; PD duration, 18.3 ± 6.5 years) were enrolled in an open-label observational study assessing the extent of WL occurring during LCIG treatment. As secondary aims, we correlated the nutritional status, as detected by the Mini Nutritional Assessment, with the severity of motor symptoms [Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III], motor complications (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part IV), activities of daily living (Schwab and England scale), cognitive impairment (Mini Mental State Examination), depression (Beck Depression Inventory), difficulties in feeding (Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia Questionnaire) and levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD). Results: There was an average WL of 9.9 ± 10.5% (7.6 ± 7.1 kg) over an LCIG treatment period of 51.6 ± 28.5 months. The extent of WL correlated with the percentage of the waking day spent with dyskinesia (P < 0.05). The nutritional status correlated with motor symptom severity (P < 0.01), dysphagia (P < 0.01) and LEDD (P < 0.01). Conclusions: Weight loss may occur in patients with PD undergoing LCIG in correlation with the percentage of the waking day spent with dyskinesia.
