    Promoting transformative and impactful research on gender and social equity in the context of climate change : implemented in Argentina, Bangladesh, Benin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nepal, and Nigeria

    The project was designed to build the capacity of IDRC staff and country research teams to develop and implement socially transformative research that contributes to effective and long-term climate action. The report summarizes the results of the project measured against four goals agreed upon for the project (described in Section 3) and concludes that the project goals were met. A set of five project activities implemented by the Gender at Work’s Gender Action Learning (GAL) methodology are described in Section 5, along with reflections on implementation challenges

    Stochastic Heterostructures in B/N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes

    Carbon nanotubes are one-dimensional and very narrow. These obvious facts imply that under doping with boron and nitrogen, microscopic doping inhomogeneity is much more important than for bulk semiconductors. We consider the possibility of exploiting such fluctuations to create interesting devices. Using self-consistent tight-binding (SCTB), we study heavily doped highly compensated nanotubes, revealing the spontaneous formation of structures resembling chains of random quantum dots, or nano-scale diode-like elements in series. We also consider truly isolated impurities, revealing simple scaling properties of bound state sizes and energies.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 4 PostScript figure

    Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibition increases epidermal growth factor expression and improves outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes

    Underlying molecular mechanisms of the kidney protective effects of sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are not fully elucidated. Therefore, we studied the association between urinary epidermal growth factor (uEGF), a mitogenic factor involved in kidney repair, and kidney outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The underlying molecular mechanisms of the SGLT2 inhibitor canagliflozin on EGF using single-cell RNA sequencing from kidney tissue were examined. Urinary EGF-to-creatinine ratio (uEGF/Cr) was measured in 3521 CANagliflozin cardioVascular Assessment Study (CANVAS) participants at baseline and week 52. Associations of uEGF/Cr with kidney outcome were assessed using multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models. Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed using protocol kidney biopsy tissue from ten young patients with T2D on SGLT2i, six patients with T2D on standard care only, and six healthy controls (HCs). In CANVAS, each doubling in baseline uEGF/Cr was associated with a 12% (95% confidence interval 1-22) decreased risk of kidney outcome. uEGF/Cr decreased after 52 weeks with placebo and remained stable with canagliflozin (between-group difference +7.3% (2.0-12.8). In young persons with T2D, EGF mRNA was primarily expressed in the thick ascending loop of Henle. Expression in biopsies from T2D without SGLT2i was significantly lower compared to HCs, whereas treatment with SGLT2i increased EGF levels closer to the healthy state. In young persons with T2D without SGLT2i, endothelin-1 emerged as a key regulator of the EGF co-expression network. SGLT2i treatment was associated with a shift towards normal EGF expression. Thus, decreased uEGF represents increased risk of kidney disease progression in patients with T2D. Canagliflozin increased kidney tissue expression of EGF and was associated with a downstream signaling cascade linked to tubular repair and reversal of tubular injury.</p

    Elimination of Identity?based Discrimination in Food and Nutrition Programmes in India

    India's growth story in recent years is being criticised for its inability to reduce the ever?increasing income inequality and higher incidence of malnutrition among its children, particularly those belonging to marginalised groups such as Scheduled Castes (SCs). This article examines the prevalence of identity?based discrimination in health and nutritional programmes and finds it to be one of the important reasons for the higher incidence of malnutrition among SC children. While examining the guidelines of two major nutritional support programmes – the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and the Mid Day Meal (MDM) Scheme – the article argues for making these more caste? and gender?sensitive in order to eliminate discrimination. It offers policy recommendations to address and monitor the discrimination in nutrition programmes. These include greater participation by marginalised groups like SCs in service planning and delivery, ensuring quality and promoting accountability; training and sensitisation of service providers; and the revision of administrative guidelines

    Effects of columnar disorder on flux-lattice melting in high-temperature superconductors

    The effect of columnar pins on the flux-lines melting transition in high-temperature superconductors is studied using Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. We highlight the similarities and differences in the effects of columnar disorder on the melting transition in YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} (YBCO) and the highly anisotropic Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} (BSCCO) at magnetic fields such that the mean separation between flux-lines is smaller than the penetration length. For pure systems, a first order transition from a flux-line solid to a liquid phase is seen as the temperature is increased. When adding columnar defects to the system, the transition temperature is not affected in both materials as long as the strength of an individual columnar defect (expressed as a flux-line defect interaction) is less than a certain threshold for a given density of randomly distributed columnar pins. This threshold strength is lower for YBCO than for BSCCO. For higher strengths the transition line is shifted for both materials towards higher temperatures, and the sharp jump in energy, characteristic of a first order transition, gives way to a smoother and gradual rise of the energy, characteristic of a second order transition. Also, when columnar defects are present, the vortex solid phase is replaced by a pinned Bose glass phase and this is manifested by a marked decrease in translational order and orientational order as measured by the appropriate structure factors. For BSCCO, we report an unusual rise of the translational order and the hexatic order just before the melting transition. No such rise is observed in YBCO.Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures, revte
