The Effect of Recency to Human Mobility
In recent years, we have seen scientists attempt to model and explain human
dynamics and, in particular, human movement. Many aspects of our complex life
are affected by human movements such as disease spread and epidemics modeling,
city planning, wireless network development, and disaster relief, to name a
few. Given the myriad of applications it is clear that a complete understanding
of how people move in space can lead to huge benefits to our society. In most
of the recent works, scientists have focused on the idea that people movements
are biased towards frequently-visited locations. According to them, human
movement is based on an exploration/exploitation dichotomy in which individuals
choose new locations (exploration) or return to frequently-visited locations
(exploitation). In this work, we focus on the concept of recency. We propose a
model in which exploitation in human movement also considers recently-visited
locations and not solely frequently-visited locations. We test our hypothesis
against different empirical data of human mobility and show that our proposed
model is able to better explain the human trajectories in these datasets
Manipulation of Magnetic Skyrmions by Superconducting Vortices in Ferromagnet-Superconductor Heterostructures
Dynamics of magnetic skyrmions in hybrid ferromagnetic films harbors novel
physical phenomena and holds promise for technological applications. In this
work, we discuss the behavior of magnetic skyrmions when coupled to
superconducting vortices in a ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructure. We
use numerical simulations and analytic arguments to reveal broader
possibilities for manipulating the skyrmion-vortex dynamic correlations in the
hybrid system, that are not possible in its separated constituents. We explore
the thresholds of particular dynamic phases, and quantify the phase diagram as
a function of the relevant material parameters, applied current and induced
magnetic torques. Finally, we demonstrate the broad and precise tunability of
the skyrmion Hall-angle in presence of vortices, with respect to currents
applied to either or both the superconductor and the ferromagnet within the
heterostructure
Prediction of wrinkling and springback in sheet metal forming
The finite element simulation is currently a powerful tool to optimize forming processes in order to produce defect-free products. Wrinkling and springback are main geometrical defects arising in sheet metal forming. Nevertheless, the prediction of such defects requires accurate numerical models. This study presents the experimental and numerical analysis of a rail with high tendency to develop both wrinkling (top surface of geometry) and springback (flange). The punch force evolution and the final geometry of the rail, evaluated in four different cross-sections, are the main variables analysed. Globally, the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. However, the shape of the wrinkle is significantly influenced by the symmetry conditions considered in the model (1/4 of the blank). In fact, considering the full model of the blank, the numerical results are in better agreement with the experimental ones. On the other hand, the computational cost of the numerical simulation considering the full blank is approximately 12 times higher than using 1/4 of the blank. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under projects with reference UID/EMS/00285/2013, PTDC/EMS-TEC/0702/2014 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016779) and PTDC/EMS-TEC/6400/2014 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016876) by UE/FEDER through the program COMPETE2020.
THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE RURAL SOCIAL MOVEMENTS: the Liberation Theology and the Movement of the Landless Rural Workers Antonio Julio Menezes Neto The Movement of the Landless Rural Workers (in portuguese, MST), of Brazil, has its origin linked to the actions of Churches, mainly of Catholic Church, in its tendency denominated Liberation Theology. This theological movement was always very close of the socialist social analyses, using, a lot of times, the marxist referencial. The relations of the Catholic Church with the rural social movements were very present in Brazil and this paper presents the social/political and theological relations present in the MST, since from the first land occupations accomplished by components of the Movement, the presence of the Catholic Church is constant. Thus, focused in the relation between Church and MST, this paper analyzes how political change, with the crisis of socialism and the progress of conservatism, alter the actions of the Movement of Landless Rural Workers. KEYWORDS: Liberation Theology, MST, Catholic Church, social movements, socialism. Publicação Online do Caderno CRH: http://www.cadernocrh.ufba.b
