    Transient Catalytic Combustor Model With Detailed Gas and Surface Chemistry

    In this work, we numerically investigate the transient combustion of a premixed gas mixture in a narrow, perfectly-insulated, catalytic channel which can represent an interior channel of a catalytic monolith. The model assumes a quasi-steady gas-phase and a transient, thermally thin solid phase. The gas phase is one-dimensional, but it does account for heat and mass transfer in a direction perpendicular to the flow via appropriate heat and mass transfer coefficients. The model neglects axial conduction in both the gas and in the solid. The model includes both detailed gas-phase reactions and catalytic surface reactions. The reactants modeled so far include lean mixtures of dry CO and CO/H2 mixtures, with pure oxygen as the oxidizer. The results include transient computations of light-off and system response to inlet condition variations. In some cases, the model predicts two different steady-state solutions depending on whether the channel is initially hot or cold. Additionally, the model suggests that the catalytic ignition of CO/O2 mixtures is extremely sensitive to small variations of inlet equivalence ratios and parts per million levels of H2

    In this paper we shall describe a program (MECHO), written in Prolog[14], which solves a wide range of mechanics problems from statements in both predicate calculus and English. Mecho uses the technique of meta-level inference to control search in natural language understanding, common sense inference, model formation and algebraic manipulation. We argue that this is a powerful technique for controlling search while retaining the modularity of declarative knowledge representations

    High-fidelity quantum driving

    The ability to accurately control a quantum system is a fundamental requirement in many areas of modern science such as quantum information processing and the coherent manipulation of molecular systems. It is usually necessary to realize these quantum manipulations in the shortest possible time in order to minimize decoherence, and with a large stability against fluctuations of the control parameters. While optimizing a protocol for speed leads to a natural lower bound in the form of the quantum speed limit rooted in the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, stability against parameter variations typically requires adiabatic following of the system. The ultimate goal in quantum control is to prepare a desired state with 100% fidelity. Here we experimentally implement optimal control schemes that achieve nearly perfect fidelity for a two-level quantum system realized with Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices. By suitably tailoring the time-dependence of the system's parameters, we transform an initial quantum state into a desired final state through a short-cut protocol reaching the maximum speed compatible with the laws of quantum mechanics. In the opposite limit we implement the recently proposed transitionless superadiabatic protocols, in which the system perfectly follows the instantaneous adiabatic ground state. We demonstrate that superadiabatic protocols are extremely robust against parameter variations, making them useful for practical applications.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Predation on an Upper Trophic Marine Predator, the Steller Sea Lion: Evaluating High Juvenile Mortality in a Density Dependent Conceptual Framework

    The endangered western stock of the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) – the largest of the eared seals – has declined by 80% from population levels encountered four decades ago. Current overall trends from the Gulf of Alaska to the Aleutian Islands appear neutral with strong regional heterogeneities. A published inferential model has been used to hypothesize a continuous decline in natality and depressed juvenile survival during the height of the decline in the mid-late 1980's, followed by the recent recovery of juvenile survival to pre-decline rates. However, these hypotheses have not been tested by direct means, and causes underlying past and present population trajectories remain unresolved and controversial. We determined post-weaning juvenile survival and causes of mortality using data received post-mortem via satellite from telemetry transmitters implanted into 36 juvenile Steller sea lions from 2005 through 2011. Data show high post-weaning mortality by predation in the eastern Gulf of Alaska region. To evaluate the impact of such high levels of predation, we developed a conceptual framework to integrate density dependent with density independent effects on vital rates and population trajectories. Our data and model do not support the hypothesized recent recovery of juvenile survival rates and reduced natality. Instead, our data demonstrate continued low juvenile survival in the Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords region of the Gulf of Alaska. Our results on contemporary predation rates combined with the density dependent conceptual framework suggest predation on juvenile sea lions as the largest impediment to recovery of the species in the eastern Gulf of Alaska region. The framework also highlights the necessity for demographic models based on age-structured census data to incorporate the differential impact of predation on multiple vital rates

    Gene-specific repair of Pt/DNA lesions and induction of apoptosis by the oral platinum drug JM216 in three human ovarian carcinoma cell lines sensitive and resistant to cisplatin

    JM216, an oral platinum drug entering into phase III clinical trial, exhibited comparable cytotoxicity to cisplatin in three human ovarian carcinoma cell lines: the sensitive (CH1), acquired resistant (CH1cisR) and intrinsically resistant (SKOV-3). Platinum accumulation and binding to DNA were similar in each of the three cell lines at equimolar doses, indicating that the resistant cell lines could tolerate higher intracellular platinum levels and platinum bound to DNA at IC50 concentrations of drug. Comparison with cisplatin demonstrated that intracellular platinum levels were marginally higher with JM216, but that platinum binding to DNA was similar for the two drugs in each of the cell lines. Each of the cell lines exhibited an ability to repair JM216 induced platinum/DNA lesions in the N-ras gene (gene-specific repair) at equitoxic concentrations of drug. However, this occurred to a greater extent in the two resistant cell lines such that by 24 h the CH1cisR and SKOV-3 had removed 72% and 67% respectively compared with approximately 32% for the CH1. Reduced gene-specific repair capacity in CH1 cells was also seen following incubation with 25 μM (or 5 μM – 2 × IC50) cisplatin, whereas the CH1cisR and SKOV-3 cell lines were repair proficient. JM216 induced apoptosis in the three cell lines following a 2h incubation with 2 × the IC50 of drug. Fluorescent microscopy of cells stained with propidium iodide showed that the detached cell population displayed typical apoptotic nuclei. Furthermore, field inversion gel electrophoresis demonstrated the presence of DNA fragments approximately 23–50 kb in size, indicative of apoptosis, in the detached cells. JM216 induced an S phase slow down in each of the three cell lines accompanied by a G2 block in the CH1 pair. Incubation with this concentration of JM216 also resulted in the induction of p53 in the CH1 and CH1cisR. These studies suggest that the relative sensitivity of the CH1 cell line to cisplatin and JM216 is at least partly attributable to a deficiency in gene-specific repair. The oral platinum drug, JM216, exerts its cytotoxic effects through the induction of apoptosis following a slow-down in S phase in both the sensitive and resistant lines. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    A unification-based, integrated natural language processing system

    This paper presents a natural language processing (NLP) system called LINK. LINK is unification-based, and incorporates and extends many features which have been emerging from other NLP research in recent years. In particular, the notions of autonomous syntax and compositional semantics long staples of NLP systems, have been replaced by a grammar which is much more complex, semantics-oriented, and more reliant on idiomatic constructions; and a semantics which is noncompositional. Processing, also, has been changed from the traditional syntax-driven approach, to an approach which relies much more heavily on semantics and domain knowledge, presented in a semantic net. As a result, LINK is able to efficiently process ungrammatical sentences, as well as nonliteral constructions such as methphor and metonymy.
