Impact of online professional development in the work environment
Online distance education programs are populated by adult learners who try to continue or
complete their education without having to leave their jobs or places of residence. Their work
environment becomes not just their working place, but also the labs where they apply new
knowledge. The general expectation is that after graduation they will make an impact in their
work environment through their job and through interacting with peers and supervisors. This
study explored the influence that K-12 teachers had in their work environment as they pursued
and graduated from an online Masters program in Education. The study showed the impact that
the participants have and how they become agents of change in their immediate workplace.publishedpeer reviewe
Own Way Girl
OWN WAY GIRL is a memoir about growing up in a Caribbean family of women. The memoir covers the narrator’s tentative beginnings as she was adopted by a single woman in Barbados at three months old until she turns sixteen and learns the secret that has weighed heavily on both her birth and adopted mother. This memoir explores the narrator’s layered relationship with her adopted mother, her complicated relationship with her birth mother, as well family dynamics with her adopted grandmother and adopted sisters. It interrogates the nature of kin and blood ties and probes the ultimate question of what makes a family. This memoir also touches on the themes of culture, class, cultural capital, domestic violence, death, and a young girl\u27s quest for agency
Understanding How Manufacturing Employees Learn About Safety
While millions of workers are injured on the job every year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019), at least some of these injuries can be attributed to failure to use what was learned during safety training (Safety Partners LTD., 2014). By better understanding workers’ experiences, organizations may be better able to create more impactful safety training programs that will ultimately keep more workers safe. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of how manufacturing employees learn about safety. A review of research has shown that empirical studies related to manufacturing employee safety training can be modeled through Daffron and North’s (2011) transfer of learning model and Daley and Cervero’s (2016) model of learning in continuing professional education. These empirical studies, however, have not focused on understanding the experiences of the manufacturing employees themselves as they learn about safety. This study followed a generic qualitative inquiry research design, with 11 semi-structured interviews of manufacturing employees at four urban manufacturing sites. It was found that combining the Daffron and North (2011) and Daley and Cervero (2016) models into a single model is an effective way to conceptualize how manufacturing employees learn about safety and practice that learning in the workplace. Other key contributions include the understanding that learning which is time-flexible and done with a person whom the employee considers to be an expert is preferred; and how the safety culture, through positive supervisor examples, is critical to the actionable practice of safety learning
Underrepresentation of Hispanic Bilingual Students in Gifted and Talented Programs: The Role of Teacher Expectations
There is currently an underrepresentation of Hispanic and bilingual students in Gifted and Talented (GT) programs. The present study examines the role of teachers’ expectations and preconceptions of what constitutes a gifted student as possible contributing factors to the underrepresentation of Hispanic and bilingual students in GT programs. Participants will include approximately 100 pre-service teachers and currently practicing teachers in the community. Measures will include a demographic survey, vignettes for identifying giftedness which describe bilingual and monolingual potential gifted students across three ethnic groups, and a survey about student qualities that includes both quantitative and qualitative items. Results and implications will be discussed
Reproductive Biology of the Bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo) from the Southeastern U.S. Atlantic Coast
Understanding the life history of marine wildlife is essential for the management of both commercial and recreational fisheries. Bonnetheads (Sphyrna tiburo) are a component of the small coastal shark (SCS) fishery complex, and are caught regularly in both types of fisheries. Despite being well studied in the Gulf of Mexico, little is known about bonnetheads from the U.S. Atlantic coast. The goal of the first component of this study was to provide new, key information on their life history to improve management of U.S. Atlantic populations, particularly by identifying reproductive seasonality, periodicity and fecundity. This was accomplished by examining sexually mature male and female bonnetheads, collected monthly (2012-2014) from South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida waters, and monitoring changes in reproductive tract morphology. Changes reflected a seasonal reproductive cycle with an annual breeding periodicity. Histology was used to confirm events and identify other important periods in the reproductive cycle, such as sperm storage in females. Overall, Atlantic coast bonnetheads were found to exhibit reproductive patterns similar to those reported in the Gulf with slight temporal shifts in the time of mating and ovulation and slightly lower fecundity ranging between 1 and 12 with an average (±SE) of 7±3.8. Additionally, the second component of this study aimed to understand gonadal sex hormone regulation in S. tiburo reproduction with a particular focus on female sperm storage. Circulating plasma sex hormones increased in association with specific reproductive events. Plasma 17β-estradiol and testosterone concentrations increased during sperm storage, whereas progesterone levels increased near the end of this stage. Immunocytochemical analysis of androgen, estrogen, and progesterone receptors in the oviducal viii gland, the organ that stores sperm in female bonnetheads, demonstrated that epithelial cells of sperm storage tubules and spermatozoa itself are direct targets for these hormones, playing a role in regulating this poorly understood process
Does treatment with donepezil improve memory for patients with mild cognitive impairment?
Donepezil (Aricept) has potential benefit in delaying risk of progression to Alzheimer's disease in the first year of treatment, but this benefit is not seen at 3 years. Donepezil does not improve memory for patients with mild cognitive impairment (strength of recommendation: B)
Colaboración internacional en el campo de la investigación educativa: Un estudio Delphi
(International) research collaboration (IRC) is considered one of the most important aspects of academic careers and, although it is often linked to co-authorship, investigations of academic perceptions and practices are rare. Reflections on factors affecting IRC, as well as effective technology for use in IRC are also now particularly vital, due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The aim of this three-round Delphi study, conducted prior to the pandemic, was to explore why and how academics conduct IRC in the field of Education. The results indicate that the benefits of IRC are more relevant than the barriers, and that networking with and learning from others are two of the most important reasons for conducting IRC. Four stages of IRC were identified, alongside a range of influencing factors, which could inform future project management training. Suggestions for institutional IRC policy are provided, as well as considerations for early career researchers.
Spin-guides and spin-splitters: Waveguide analogies in one-dimensional spin chains
Here we show a direct mapping between waveguide theory and spin chain
transport, opening an alternative approach to quantum information transport in
the solid-state. By applying temporally varying control profiles to a spin
chain, we design a virtual waveguide or 'spin-guide' to conduct individual spin
excitations along defined space-time trajectories of the chain. We explicitly
show that the concepts of confinement, adiabatic bend loss and beamsplitting
can be mapped from optical waveguide theory to spin-guides (and hence
'spin-splitters'). Importantly, the spatial scale of applied control pulses is
required to be large compared to the inter-spin spacing, and thereby allowing
the design of scalable control architectures.Comment: 5 figure
Constraining the Progenitor Companion of the Nearby Type Ia SN 2011fe with a Nebular Spectrum at +981 Days
We present an optical nebular spectrum of the nearby Type Ia supernova
2011fe, obtained 981 days after explosion. SN 2011fe exhibits little evolution
since the +593 day optical spectrum, but there are several curious aspects in
this new extremely late-time regime. We suggest that the persistence of the
~\AA\ feature is due to Na I D, and that a new emission feature at
~\AA\ may be [Ca II]. Also, we discuss whether the new emission
feature at ~\AA\ might be [Fe I] or the high-velocity hydrogen
predicted by Mazzali et al. The nebular feature at 5200~\AA\ exhibits a linear
velocity evolution of per 100 days from at least
+220 to +980 days, but the line's shape also changes in this time, suggesting
that line blending contributes to the evolution. At days after
explosion, flux from the SN has declined to a point where contribution from a
luminous secondary could be detected. In this work we make the first
observational tests for a post-impact remnant star and constrain its
temperature and luminosity to and
. Additionally, we do not see any evidence for narrow H
emission in our spectrum. We conclude that observations continue to strongly
exclude many single-degenerate scenarios for SN 2011fe.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, published by MNRA
