    Tack Coat Installation Performance Guidelines

    A tack coat is a thin application of asphalt (typically emulsified) used to bond pavement layers together so that they act monolithically. Lack of bonding can lead to fatigue cracking, delamination, slippage and other distresses. This study was undertaken to explore the impacts of various tack coat materials, application rates, and other variables on tack coat performance. The ultimate original goal was to develop a tack coat quality acceptance system. As the study progressed, some of the original objectives and tasks were modified or dropped. Laboratory testing of lab- and field-fabricated specimens using a monotonic direct shear test was used to evaluate the factors of interest. The findings showed that the most commonly used tack materials in Indiana, AE-NT and SS-1h, can perform, with the AE-NT exhibiting somewhat better performance overall. INDOT’s tack specifications could be clarified. The current applications rates are reasonable but could be refined to provide more guidance for use on different types of surfaces, as widely recommended nationally. The use of spray pavers and alternate tack materials should be further explored. Planned spray paver trial projects could provide the opportunity to expand on the results of this project, to explore other test methods, gain more experience with shear testing, and assess typical tack applications on non-experimental projects to assess the state of the practice. Additional implementation studies may help to refine a performance test and criteria for use to assess tack coat quality.     The Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) is a double rack facility designed for microgravity investigation handling aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The unique design of the facility allows it to accommodate science and technology investigations in a "workbench" type environment. MSG facility provides an enclosed working area for investigation manipulation and observation in the ISS. Provides two levels of containment via physical barrier, negative pressure, and air filtration. The MSG team and facilities provide quick access to space for exploratory and National Lab type investigations to gain an understanding of the role of gravity in the physics associated research areas. The MSG is a very versatile and capable research facility on the ISS. The Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) on the International Space Station (ISS) has been used for a large body or research in material science, heat transfer, crystal growth, life sciences, smoke detection, combustion, plant growth, human health, and technology demonstration. MSG is an ideal platform for gravity-dependent phenomena related research. Moreover, the MSG provides engineers and scientists a platform for research in an environment similar to the one that spacecraft and crew members will actually experience during space travel and exploration. The MSG facility is ideally suited to provide quick, relatively inexpensive access to space for National Lab type investigations

    Family and school social capital, school burnout and academic achievement : a multilevel longitudinal analysis among Finnish pupils

    Research on the associations between family and school social capital, school burnout and academic achievement in adolescence is scarce and the results are inconclusive. We examined if family and school social capital at the age of 13 predicts lower school burnout and better academic achievement when graduating at the age of 16. Using data from 4467 Finnish adolescents from 117 schools and 444 classes a three-level multilevel analysis was executed. School social capital, the positive and supportive relationships between students and teachers, predicted lower school burnout and better academic achievement among students. Classmates' family social capital had also significance for students' academic achievement. Our results suggest that building school social capital is an important aspect of school health and education policies and practices.Peer reviewe

    Three structural isomers of tris{bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl}borane have been studied as the acidic com- ponent of frustrated Lewis pairs. While the 3,5-substituted isomer is already known to heterolytically cleave H2 to generate a bridging-hydride; ortho-substituents in the 2,4- and 2,5-isomers quench such reactivity through electron donation into the vacant boron pz orbital and steric blocking of the boron centre; as shown by electrochemical, structural and computational studies. Electrochemical studies of the corresponding borohydrides identify that the two-electron oxidation of terminal-hydrides occurs at more positive potentials than observed for [HB(C6F5)3]−, while the bridging-hydride oxidizes at a higher poten- tial still, comparable to that of free H2

    Serious scientific games are games whose purpose is not only fun. In the field of science, the serious goals include crucial activities for scientists: outreach, teaching and research. The number of serious games is increasing rapidly, in particular citizen science games, games that allow people to produce and/or analyze scientific data. Interestingly, it is possible to build a set of rules providing a guideline to create or improve serious games. We present arguments gathered from our own experience ( Phylo , DocMolecules , HiRE-RNA contest and Pangu) as well as examples from the growing literature on scientific serious games

    On Effective Superpotentials and Compactification to Three Dimensions

    We study four dimensional N=2 SO/SP supersymmetric gauge theory on R^3\times S^1 deformed by a tree level superpotential. We will show that the exact superpotential can be obtained by making use of the Lax matrix of the corresponding integrable model which is the periodic Toda lattice. The connection between vacua of SO(2N) and SO(2kN-2k+2) can also be seen in this framework.
