Impaired Postural Control Reduces Sit-to-Stand-to-Sit Performance in Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Abstract
Background: Functional activities, such as the sit-to-stand-to-sit (STSTS) task, are often impaired in individuals with chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The STSTS task places a high demand on the postural control system, which has
been shown to be impaired in individuals with COPD. It remains unknown whether postural control deficits contribute to
the decreased STSTS performance in individuals with COPD.
Methods: Center of pressure displacement was determined in 18 individuals with COPD and 18 age/gender-matched
controls during five consecutive STSTS movements with vision occluded. The total duration, as well as the duration of each
sit, sit-to-stand, stand and stand-to-sit phase was recorded.
Results: Individuals with COPD needed significantly more time to perform five consecutive STSTS movements compared to healthy controls (1966 vs. 1364 seconds, respectively; p = 0.001). The COPD group exhibited a significantly longer stand phase (p = 0.028) and stand-to-sit phase (p = 0.001) compared to the control group. In contrast, the duration of the sit phase (p = 0.766) and sit-to-stand phase (p = 0.999) was not different between groups.
Conclusions: Compared to healthy individuals, individuals with COPD needed significantly more time to complete those phases of the STSTS task that require the greatest postural control. These findings support the proposition that suboptimal postural control is an important contributor to the decreased STSTS performance in individuals with COPD
Anomalous Rotational Relaxation: A Fractional Fokker-Planck Equation Approach
In this study we obtained analytically relaxation function in terms of
rotational correlation functions based on Brownian motion for complex
disordered systems in a stochastic framework. We found out that rotational
relaxation function has a fractional form for complex disordered systems, which
indicates relaxation has non-exponential character obeys to
Kohlrausch-William-Watts law, following the Mittag-Leffler decay.Comment: Revtex4, 9 pages. Paper was revised. References adde
Digital training platform for interpreting radiographic images of the chest
Introduction: Time delays and errors exist which lead to delays in patient care and misdiagnosis. Reporting clinicians follow guidance to form their own search strategy. However, little research has tested these training guides. With the use of eye tracking technology and expert input we developed a digital training platform to be used in chest image interpretation learning.
Methods: Two sections of a digital training platform were planned and developed; A) a search strategy training tool to assist reporters during their interpretation of images, and B) an educational tool to communicate the search strategies of expert viewers to trainees by using eye tracking technology.
Results: A digital training platform for use in chest image interpretation was created based on evidence within the literature, expert input and two search strategies previously used in clinical practice. Images and diagrams, aiding translation of the platform content, were incorporated where possible. The platform is structured to allow the chest image interpretation process to be clear, concise and methodical.
Conclusion: A search strategy was incorporated within the tool to investigate its use, with the possibility that it could be recommended as an evidence based approach for use by reporting clinicians. Eye tracking, a checklist and voice recordings have been combined to form a multi-dimensional learning tool, which has never been used in chest image interpretation learning before. The training platform for use in chest image interpretation learning has been designed, created and digitised. Future work will establish the efficacy of the developed approaches
Modelling stratospheric polar ozone using objective analysis
We have studied the development of the austral ozone hole using a 3-D spectral chemical transport model at R15 resolution for the period 15th September to 15th October, 1991. The model is driven by objectively analyzed wind fields obtained from the Canadian Meteorological Center and uses the chemical module developed by Kaminski (1992). Although extensive processing of NO(y) and Cl(x) occurs within the model, the ozone hole that develops appears shallow and ephemeral. Analysis of the results indicate that the meridional transport of ozone is sufficient to overwhelm the substantial chemical depletion that does occur. We suggest that the low resolution objectively analyzed data used is unable to capture the essential isolated nature of the vortex
A Catalog of HI Clouds in the Large Magellanic Cloud
A 21 cm neutral hydrogen interferometric survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud
(LMC) combined with the Parkes multi-beam HI single-dish survey clearly shows
that the HI gas is distributed in the form of clumps or clouds. The HI clouds
and clumps have been identified using a thresholding method with three separate
brightness temperature thresholds (). Each catalog of HI cloud candidates
shows a power law relationship between the sizes and the velocity dispersions
of the clouds roughly following the Larson Law scaling , with steeper indices associated with dynamically hot regions. The
clouds in each catalog have roughly constant virial parameters as a function
mass suggesting that that the clouds are all in roughly the same dynamical
state, but the values of the virial parameter are significantly larger than
unity showing that turbulent motions dominate gravity in these clouds. The mass
distribution of the clouds is a power law with differential indices between
-1.6 and -2.0 for the three catalogs. In contrast, the distribution of mean
surface densities is a log-normal distribution.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, ApJS, in pres
Idea-caution before exploitation:the use of cybersecurity domain knowledge to educate software engineers against software vulnerabilities
The transfer of cybersecurity domain knowledge from security experts (âEthical Hackersâ) to software engineers is discussed in terms of desirability and feasibility. Possible mechanisms for the transfer are critically examined. Software engineering methodologies do not make use of security domain knowledge in its form of vulnerability databases (e.g. CWE, CVE, Exploit DB), which are therefore not appropriate for this purpose. An approach based upon the improved use of pattern languages that encompasses security domain knowledge is proposed
Generalized Robba rings
We prove that any projective coadmissible module over the locally analytic
distribution algebra of a compact -adic Lie group is finitely generated. In
particular, the category of coadmissible modules does not have enough
projectives. In the Appendix a "generalized Robba ring" for uniform pro-
groups is constructed which naturally contains the locally analytic
distribution algebra as a subring. The construction uses the theory of
generalized microlocalization of quasi-abelian normed algebras that is also
developed there. We equip this generalized Robba ring with a self-dual locally
convex topology extending the topology on the distribution algebra. This is
used to show some results on coadmissible modules.Comment: with an appendix by Peter Schneider; revised; new titl
