    Use the URI link below to search the Marine Institute Data Discovery Catalogue for datasets relevant to this report.Acoustic surveys on blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) spawning aggregations in the north east Atlantic have been carried out by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) Norway since the early 1970s. In the early 1980s a coordinated acoustic survey approach was adopted, with both Russia and Norway participating to estimate the size of this migratory stock within the main spawning grounds to the west of Ireland and Britain. Since 2004, an International coordinated survey program has expanded to include vessels from the EU (Ireland and the Netherlands) and the Faroes. Due to the highly migratory nature of the stock a large geographical area has to be surveyed. Spawning takes place from January through to April along the shelf break from the southern Porcupine Bank area northwards to the Faroe Shetland Ridge including offshore areas as the Rosemary, Hatton and Rockall Banks. Peak spawning occurs between mid-March and mid April and acoustic surveys are timed to occur during this phase. To facilitate a more coordinated spatio-temporal approach to the survey participating countries meet annually to discuss survey methods and define target areas at the ICES led Working Group on Northeast Atlantic Pelagic Ecosystem Surveys (WGNAPES). Data from the annual spawning stock abundance survey (March/April, western waters), juvenile surveys (May, Norwegian Sea and January-March, Barents Sea trawl survey) and commercial landings data are presented annually at the ICES Working Group of Widely Distributed Stocks (WGWDS). Ultimately, combined data inputs into the management and catch advice for this international cross boundary stock. The 2010 survey was part of an International collaborative survey using the vessels RV Celtic Explorer (Ireland), RV Fridtjof Nansen (Russia), RV Tridens (Netherlands) and the RV Magnus Heinason (Faroes) and the RV G.O. Sars (Norway). The total combined area coverage extended from the Faroe Islands in the north (60.30°N) to south of Ireland (52°N), with east -west extension from 6°-18° W. International survey participants meet shortly after the survey to present data and produce a combined relative abundance and biomass index the blue whiting spawning stock in western waters. The combined survey report is presented annually at the WGNAPES meeting held in August and made available to the WGWDS assessment group

    Analysis of the Rumen Microbiota of Beef Calves Supplemented During the Suckling Phase

    A study was conducted to examine the effects of supplementing beef calves during their suckling phase (popularly known as creep feeding) with supplements that contained or did not contain the enzyme xylanase. Forty-two cow-calf pairs were divided into three groups and assigned to one of three treatments for a period of 105 days, as follows: (1) No supplemental feed for calves (control; CON); (2) Corn and soybean meal-based supplement feed for calves (positive control; PCON); and (3) Same feed regimen as PCON with xylanase added to the supplement (enzyme; ENZ). After 105 days, out of the 42 calves participating in the study, 25 male calves were randomly selected (8 from CON, 9 from PCON, and 8 from ENZ) and samples of their forestomach were collected by esophageal tubing. Immediately after this procedure, all calves were weaned, commingled, and placed in a common post-weaning diet for 4 weeks. At the end of this period, ruminal fluid was once again collected from the same 25 calves. All samples were subjected to DNA extraction and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. At weaning, most of the alpha diversity indexes were greater in CON; however, no differences (P ≄ 0.23) in alpha diversity were observed in samples collected 4 weeks after weaning. Regardless of treatment, 2 phyla – Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes – comprised approximately 80% of the total bacterial abundance of samples collected on both days. At the genus level, an effect of diet (P = 0.02) was observed for Prevotella in the samples collected at weaning; however, no differences were detected in the samples collected 4 weeks after weaning. Calf average daily gain (ADG) during the 105-day creep feeding trial tended (P = 0.09) to be greater in the groups that received supplementation, with the greatest numerical value observed in ENZ. Moreover, there was a positive correlation (ρ = 0.43; P = 0.03) between ADG and abundance of Prevotella, indicating the importance of this bacterial group for ruminants. In summary, most of the significant differences found in this study were detected at weaning, and the majority of them disappeared 4 weeks after the calves were weaned and commingled

    Social exclusion of older persons: a scoping review and conceptual framework

    As a concept, social exclusion has considerable potential to explain and respond to disadvantage in later life. However, in the context of ageing populations, the construct remains ambiguous. A disjointed evidence-base, spread across disparate disciplines, compounds the challenge of developing a coherent understanding of exclusion in older age. This article addresses this research deficit by presenting the findings of a two-stage scoping review encompassing seven separate reviews of the international literature pertaining to old-age social exclusion. Stage one involved a review of conceptual frameworks on old-age exclusion, identifying conceptual understandings and key domains of later-life exclusion. Stage two involved scoping reviews on each domain (six in all). Stage one identified six conceptual frameworks on old-age exclusion and six common domains across these frameworks: neighbourhood and community; services, amenities and mobility; social relations; material and financial resources; socio-cultural aspects; and civic participation. International literature concentrated on the first four domains, but indicated a general lack of research knowledge and of theoretical development. Drawing on all seven scoping reviews and a knowledge synthesis, the article presents a new definition and conceptual framework relating to old-age exclusion

    The protein and miRNA profile of plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) can distinguish feline mammary adenocarcinoma patients from healthy feline controls

    Abstract Feline mammary adenocarcinomas (FMA) are aggressive tumours with metastatic capability and limited treatment options. This study aims to investigate whether miRNAs associated with FMA tumours are secreted in extracellular vesicles (EVs) and whether they can potentially be used as a cancer biomarker in EVs from feline plasma. Tumours and matched tumour free margins from 10 felines with FMA were selected. Following a detailed literature search, RT-qPCR analyses of 90 miRNAs identified 8 miRNAs of interest for further investigation. Tumour tissue, margins and plasma were subsequently collected from a further 10 felines with FMA. EVs were isolated from the plasma. RT-qPCR expression analyses of the 8 miRNAs of interest were carried out in tumour tissue, margins, FMA EVs and control EVs. Additionally, proteomic analysis of both control and FMA plasma derived EVs was undertaken. RT-qPCR revealed significantly increased miR-20a and miR-15b in tumours compared to margins. A significant decrease in miR-15b and miR-20a was detected in EVs from FMAs compared to healthy feline EVs. The proteomic content of EVs distinguished FMAs from controls, with the protein targets of miR-20a and miR-15b also displaying lower levels in the EVs from patients with FMA. This study has demonstrated that miRNAs are readily detectable in both the tissue and plasma derived EVs from patients with FMA. These miRNAs and their protein targets are a detectable panel of markers in circulating plasma EVs that may inform future diagnostic tests for FMA in a non-invasive manner. Moreover, the clinical relevance of miR-20a and miR-15b warrants further investigation

    Anticipatory care planning for older adults: a trans-jurisictional feasibility study

    BackgroundAs the population of older adults’ increases, the complexity of care required to support those who choose to remain in the community has also increased. Anticipatory Care Planning (ACP) through earlier identification of healthcare needs is evidenced to improve quality of life, decrease the number of aggressive futile interventions, and even to prolong life.AimTo determine the feasibility of a cluster randomised trial to evaluate the implementation and outcomes of Anticipatory Care Planning (ACP) in primary care to assist older adults identified as at risk for functional decline by developing a personalised support plan.MethodGP practices were randomised into control/intervention groups stratified by jurisdiction [Northern Ireland (UK) and Republic of Ireland (RoI)], and by setting (urban and rural). Participants were included if they were a) aged ≄70 years, b) 2 or more chronic medical conditions, c) 4 or more prescribed medications. The Anticipatory Care Plan consisted of home visits where the study nurse discussed patients’ goals and plans. An action plan was put in place following consultation with patient’s GPs and study Pharmacist.ResultsEight primary care practices participated; four in the UK and four in RoI. Sample n=64. Data was collected pertaining to patient quality of life, mental health, healthcare utilisation, costs, perception of person centred care, and the use of potentially inappropriate medication.ConclusionUnique insights relating to the trans-jurisdictional delivery of healthcare services in the UK and RoI were observed which has implications on service delivery for older adults.<br/

    Problem alcohol use among problem drug users : development of clinical guidelines for general practice

    Abstract for presentation at AUDGPI Annual Scientific Meeting, Dublin, Ireland, 9th March 2012Introduction: Problem alcohol use is common and associated with considerable adverse health and social outcomes among patients who attend GPs in Ireland and other European countries for opioid substitution treatment. This paper aims to describe the development and content of clinical guidelines for the management of problem alcohol use among current or former opioid users attending general practice for methadone treatment. Methods: The guidelines were developed in several stages: i) identification of key stakeholders; ii) development of evidence-based draft guidelines, and iii)determination of a modified ‘Delphi-facilitated’ consensus among the group members. These guidelines were informed by a review of scientific evidence and a qualitative study, results of which will be presented also at this conference. Results: The guidelines incorporate advice for GPs on all aspects of care of this problem, including i) definition of problem alcohol use among problem drug users, ii) screening / identification of problem alcohol use, iii) interventions for treatment and management of problem alcohol use, iv) referral to secondary services and v) role of GPs in the management of persistent problem alcohol use and on-going care. Conclusions: General practice has an important role to play in the care of problem alcohol use among problem drug users, especially patients who attend for methadone treatment. Further research on strategies to inform the implementation of this study is a priority.Health Research Boardau, ti, ke - TS 24.04.1
