    Refining the picture: new records to the lichen biota of Italy

    Based on the analysis of both historical and recent collections, this paper reports an annotated list of taxa which are new to the lichen biota of Italy or of its administrative regions. Specimens were identified using a dissecting and a compound microscope; routine chemical spot tests and standardized thin-layer chromatography (TLC or HPTLC). The list includes 225 records of 153 taxa. Twenty taxa are new to Italy, the others are new to one or more administrative regions, with 15 second records and 5 third records for Italy. Some of the species belong to recently-described taxa, others are poorly known, sterile or ephemeral lichens which were largely overlooked in Italy. Several species are actually rare, either because of the rarity of their habitats (e.g. old-growth forests), or because in Italy they are at the margins of their bioclimatic distribution. The picture of the lichen biota of Italy has now new pixels, but its grain is still coarse. Further analysis of historical collections, increased efforts in the exploration of some areas, and the taxonomic revision of critical groups are still necessary to provide more complete distributional data for new biogeographic hypotheses, taxonomic and ecological research, and biodiversity conservation

    A hotspot of lichen diversity and lichenological research in the Alps: the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park (Italy)

    A checklist of 916 lichenised taxa is reported from the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park and its surroundings (Trentino-Alto Adige, N Italy), based on 7351 records from: (a) 72 literature sources, (b) eight public and private herbaria and (c) field observations by some of the authors. The study area appears as a hotspot of lichen diversity, hosting 30.1% of the lichen biota of the Alps in a territory that has 0.064% of their total surface area. This is mainly due to its high climatical, geological and orographic heterogeneity, but also to the long history of lichenological exploration, that started in the 19th century with Ferdinand Arnold and is still ongoing. The present work highlights the importance of detailed species inventories to support knowledge of biodiversity patterns, taxonomy and ecology and to properly address conservation issues. Fuscidea mollis var. caesioalbescens, Hydropunctaria scabra, Protoparmelia badia var. cinereobadia and Variospora paulii are new to Italy, 18 other taxa are new to Trentino-Alto Adige

    Enhancing reuse of data and biological material in medical research : from FAIR to FAIR-Health

    The known challenge of underutilization of data and biological material from biorepositories as potential resources formedical research has been the focus of discussion for over a decade. Recently developed guidelines for improved data availability and reusability—entitled FAIR Principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability)—are likely to address only parts of the problem. In this article,we argue that biologicalmaterial and data should be viewed as a unified resource. This approach would facilitate access to complete provenance information, which is a prerequisite for reproducibility and meaningful integration of the data. A unified view also allows for optimization of long-term storage strategies, as demonstrated in the case of biobanks.Wepropose an extension of the FAIR Principles to include the following additional components: (1) quality aspects related to research reproducibility and meaningful reuse of the data, (2) incentives to stimulate effective enrichment of data sets and biological material collections and its reuse on all levels, and (3) privacy-respecting approaches for working with the human material and data. These FAIR-Health principles should then be applied to both the biological material and data. We also propose the development of common guidelines for cloud architectures, due to the unprecedented growth of volume and breadth of medical data generation, as well as the associated need to process the data efficiently.peer-reviewe

    Homogenized rigid-plastic model for masonry walls subjected to impact

    A simple rigid-plastic homogenization model for the analysis of masonry structures subjected to out-of-plane impact loads is presented. The objective is to propose a model characterized by a few material parameters, numerically inexpensive and very stable. Bricks and mortar joints are assumed rigid perfectly plastic and obeying an associated flow rule. In order to take into account the effect of brickwork texture, out-of-plane anisotropic masonry failure surfaces are obtained by means of a limit analysis approach, in which the unit cell is subdivided into a fixed number of sub-domains and layers along the thickness. A polynomial representation of micro-stress tensor components is utilized inside each sub-domain, assuring both stress tensor admissibility on a regular grid of points and continuity of the stress vector at the interfaces between contiguous sub-domains. Limited strength (frictional failure with compressive cap and tension cutoff) of brick-mortar interfaces is also considered in the model, thus allowing the reproduction of elementary cell failures due to the possible insufficient resistance of the bond between units and joints. Triangular Kirchhoff-Love elements with linear interpolation of the displacement field and constant moment within each element are used at a structural level. In this framework, a simple quadratic programming problem is obtained to analyze entire walls subjected to impacts. In order to test the capabilities of the approach proposed, two examples of technical interest are discussed, namely a running bond masonry wall constrained at three edges and subjected to a point impact load and a masonry square plate constrained at four edges and subjected to a distributed dynamic pressure simulating an air-blast. Only for the first example, numerical and experimental data are available, whereas for the second example insufficient information is at disposal from the literature. Comparisons with standard elastic-plastic procedures conducted by means of commercial FE codes are also provided. Despite the obvious approximations and limitations connected to the utilization of a rigid-plastic model for masonry, the approach proposed seems able to provide results in agreement with alternative expensive numerical elasto-plastic approaches, but requiring only negligible processing time. Therefore, the proposed simple tool can be used (in addition to more sophisticated but expensive non-linear procedures) by practitioners to have a fast estimation of masonry behavior subjected to impact

    The impact of the social environment on children's mental health in a prosperous city: an analysis with data from the city of Munich

    BACKGROUND: Children with a low socioeconomic position are more affected by mental difficulties as compared to children with a higher socioeconomic position. This paper explores whether this socioeconomic pattern persists in the prosperous German city of Munich which features high quality of life and coverage of children mental health specialists that lies well above the national average and is among the highest in Europe. METHODS: 1,265 parents of preschool children participated in a cross-sectional health survey. They were given a self-administered questionnaire (including socioeconomic variables) and the 'Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)', a well-established method to identify mental difficulties among children and adolescents. Prevalence estimates for the 'SDQ-Total Difficulties Score' were calculated, with a special focus on differences by parental (resp. household) socioeconomic position. The association between parental education, household income, single parenthood, nationality, and parental working status on one hand, and their children's mental health on the other, was explored using multivariable logistic regression models. The coverage of mental health specialists per 100,000 children aged 14 or younger in the city of Munich was also calculated. RESULTS: In Munich, the distribution of mental health difficulties among children follows the same socioeconomic pattern as described previously at the national level, but the overall prevalence is about 30% lower. Comparing different indicators of socioeconomic position, low parental education and household income are the strongest independent variables associated with mental difficulties among children (OR = 2.7; CI = 1.6 - 4.4 and OR = 2.8; CI = 1.4 - 5.6, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Socioeconomic differences in the prevalence of childhood mental difficulties are very stable. Even in a city such as Munich, which is characterized by high quality of life, high availability of mental health specialists, and low overall prevalence of these mental difficulties, they are about as pronounced as in Germany as a whole. It can be concluded that the effect of several characteristics of socioeconomic position 'overrules' the effect of a health promoting regional environment
