Contextual variety, Internet-of-Things and the choice of tailoring over platform: Mass customisation strategy in supply chain management

Available on open access from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordThis paper considers the implications for Supply Chain Management (SCM) from the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) or Internet Connected Objects (ICO). We focus on opportunities and challenges stemming from consumption data that comes from ICO, and on how this data can be mapped onto strategic choices of product variety. We develop a simple analytical framework that illustrates the underlying mechanisms of a product supplier/producer׳s choice between (i) producing multiple product varieties as a way of meeting consumer demand (a “tailoring strategy”), and (ii) offering a flexible and standardised platform which enables consumers׳ needs to be met by incorporating personal ICO data into various customisable applications (a “platform strategy”). Under a platform strategy, the ICO data is independently produced by other providers and can be called on in both use and context of use. We derive conditions under which each of the strategies may be profitable for the provider through maximising consumers’ value. Our findings are that the higher the demand for contextual variety, the more profitable the platform strategy becomes, relative to the tailoring strategy. Our study concludes by considering the implications for SCM research and practice with an extension to postponement taxonomies, including those where the customer, and not the supplier, is the completer of the product, and we show that this yields higher profits than the tailoring strategy.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC
Data sharing for business model innovation in platform ecosystems: From private data to public good
Extant research posits that open data could unlock more than $3 trillion in additional value worldwide across various application domains. This paper investigates a data-sharing perspective in business models of platform ecosystems and discusses how platform owners can derive more value using data. We chose a sample of 12 platforms in which data are used as a key resource for service propositions. By contrasting these cases, we identify and analyse four archetypes: data crawler, data marketplace, data aggregator, and data disseminator. We define the key features of these archetypes and demonstrate how they realise value via the platform. These archetypes can guide managers in realising private and public goods via data sharing. Building on our findings, we derive recommendations for data-driven business model innovation for platform ecosystems
Feed people first: A service ecosystem perspective on innovative food waste reduction
Service research highlights the utility of adopting a service ecosystem approach to studying service innovation. It suggests that service innovations can arise from challenging and developing the institutions (i.e., norms, rules, practices, meanings, and symbols) which underpin an ecosystem. Also, recent emphasis on consumer well-being posits that studies of service provision to poor consumers are needed. Reflecting these research priorities, the context of this case study on service innovation is the food waste ecosystem, whereby service innovations can contribute to the alleviation of food poverty for thousands of citizens. The central actor of the ecosystem is the leading UK charity organization fighting food waste. The paper’s contribution lies in using data from ecosystem actors to clarify the distinctions between institutions, thereby enhancing understanding of the application of institutional theory within the ecosystem and highlighting some theoretical implications for service innovation both within- and between-system levels. An actor institutions matrix is offered as a fruitful outcome of the analysis of the institutions, and suggested recommendations for operationalizing service ecosystem studies are outlined

Distributed Ledger for Provenance Tracking of Artificial Intelligence Assets
High availability of data is responsible for the current trends in Artificial
Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). However, high-grade datasets are
reluctantly shared between actors because of lacking trust and fear of losing
control. Provenance tracing systems are a possible measure to build trust by
improving transparency. Especially the tracing of AI assets along complete AI
value chains bears various challenges such as trust, privacy, confidentiality,
traceability, and fair remuneration. In this paper we design a graph-based
provenance model for AI assets and their relations within an AI value chain.
Moreover, we propose a protocol to exchange AI assets securely to selected
parties. The provenance model and exchange protocol are then combined and
implemented as a smart contract on a permission-less blockchain. We show how
the smart contract enables the tracing of AI assets in an existing industry use
case while solving all challenges. Consequently, our smart contract helps to
increase traceability and transparency, encourages trust between actors and
thus fosters collaboration between them
A Discussion of Value Metrics for Data Repositories in Earth and Environmental Sciences
Despite growing recognition of the importance of public data to the modern economy and to scientific progress, long-term investment in the repositories that manage and disseminate scientific data in easily accessible-ways remains elusive. Repositories are asked to demonstrate that there is a net value of their data and services to justify continued funding or attract new funding sources. Here, representatives from a number of environmental and Earth science repositories evaluate approaches for assessing the costs and benefits of publishing scientific data in their repositories, identifying various metrics that repositories typically use to report on the impact and value of their data products and services, plus additional metrics that would be useful but are not typically measured. We rated each metric by (a) the difficulty of implementation by our specific repositories and (b) its importance for value determination. As managers of environmental data repositories, we find that some of the most easily obtainable data-use metrics (such as data downloads and page views) may be less indicative of value than metrics that relate to discoverability and broader use. Other intangible but equally important metrics (e.g., laws or regulations impacted, lives saved, new proposals generated), will require considerable additional research to describe and develop, plus resources to implement at scale. As value can only be determined from the point of view of a stakeholder, it is likely that multiple sets of metrics will be needed, tailored to specific stakeholder needs. Moreover, economically based analyses or the use of specialists in the field are expensive and can happen only as resources permit

Because CE research originated in the engineering field, studies to date have mostly focused on technical and management-related topics. However, due to increasing demands from customers, investors, governmental institutions, and regulatory bodies, companies are increasingly considering how to effectively implement the CE. Despite its increasing importance, the CE is yet an uncharted area of transformative service research (TSR), and little is known about how the CE can support change for greater well-being among individuals and collectives. To fill this research gap, we integrate notions of the CE with TSR and research on value co-creation. The purpose of this paper is to expand research on CE and services by taking a TSR perspective to delineate how value retention and regeneration processes for different levels and spheres in services can effect change for greater individual and collective well-being.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Counci

Emerging Digital Frontiers for Service Innovation
This paper examines emerging digital frontiers for service innovation that a panel discussed at a workshop on this topic held at the 48th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). The speakers and participants agreed that that service systems are fundamental for service innovation and value creation. In this context, service systems are related to cognitive systems, smart service systems, and cyber-physical systems and depend on the interconnectedness among system components. The speakers and participants regarded humans as the central entity in all service systems. In addition, data, they saw personal data in particular as key to service systems. They also identified several challenges in the areas of cognitive systems, smart service systems, cyber-physical systems, and human-centered service systems. We hope this workshop report helps in some small way to cultivate the emerging service science discipline and to nurture fruitful discussions on service innovation
A systematic review of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer education and peer support in prisons.
BACKGROUND: Prisoners experience significantly worse health than the general population. This review examines the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer interventions in prison settings. METHODS: A mixed methods systematic review of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness studies, including qualitative and quantitative synthesis was conducted. In addition to grey literature identified and searches of websites, nineteen electronic databases were searched from 1985 to 2012. Study selection criteria were: Population: Prisoners resident in adult prisons and children resident in Young Offender Institutions (YOIs). INTERVENTION: Peer-based interventions Comparators: Review questions 3 and 4 compared peer and professionally led approaches. OUTCOMES: Prisoner health or determinants of health; organisational/ process outcomes; views of prison populations. STUDY DESIGNS: Quantitative, qualitative and mixed method evaluations. RESULTS: Fifty-seven studies were included in the effectiveness review and one study in the cost-effectiveness review; most were of poor methodological quality. Evidence suggested that peer education interventions are effective at reducing risky behaviours, and that peer support services are acceptable within the prison environment and have a positive effect on recipients, practically or emotionally. Consistent evidence from many, predominantly qualitative, studies, suggested that being a peer deliverer was associated with positive effects. There was little evidence on cost-effectiveness of peer-based interventions. CONCLUSIONS: There is consistent evidence from a large number of studies that being a peer worker is associated with positive health; peer support services are also an acceptable source of help within the prison environment and can have a positive effect on recipients.
