The Role of Banks in the Transmission of Monetary Policy in the Baltics
The paper empirically investigates the monetary transmission mechanism in the Baltic States. The analysis of the transmission channels through which monetary policy shocks are transmitted is particularly important for the European Central Bank that makes monetary policy in an enlarged European Monetary Union. The paper focuses on the bank lending channel of monetary transmission due to the importance of banks in the financial system of the Baltic countries. The existence of this transmission channel is tested by using a panel structural approach that distinguishes banks according to size, capitalization, liquidity and ownership structure. The results indicate that a bank lending channel is present in the Baltic States and mainly caused by differences in liquidity. --Monetary Transmission,Bank Lending Channel,Transition Countries

Motor expertise modulates the unconscious processing of human body postures
Little is known about the cognitive background of unconscious visuomotor control of complex sports movements. Therefore, we investigated the extent to which novices and skilled high-jump athletes are able to identify visually presented body postures of the high jump unconsciously. We also asked whether or not the manner of processing differs (qualitatively or quantitatively) between these groups as a function of their motor expertise. A priming experiment with not consciously perceivable stimuli was designed to determine whether subliminal priming of movement phases (same vs. different movement phases) or temporal order (i.e. natural vs. reversed movement order) affects target processing. Participants had to decide which phase of the high jump (approach vs. flight phase) a target photograph was taken from. We found a main effect of temporal order for skilled athletes, that is, faster reaction times for prime-target pairs that reflected the natural movement order as opposed to the reversed movement order. This result indicates that temporal-order information pertaining to the domain of expertise plays a critical role in athletesâ perceptual capacities. For novices, data analyses revealed an interaction between temporal order and movement phases. That is, only the reversed movement order of flight-approach pictures increased processing time. Taken together, the results suggest that the structure of cognitive movement representation modulates unconscious processing of movement pictures and points to a functional role of motor representations in visual perception
Applications of CRISPRâCas systems in neuroscience
Genome-editing tools, and in particular those based on CRISPR-Cas (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-CRISPR-associated protein) systems, are accelerating the pace of biological research and enabling targeted genetic interrogation in almost any organism and cell type. These tools have opened the door to the development of new model systems for studying the complexity of the nervous system, including animal models and stem cell-derived in vitro models. Precise and efficient gene editing using CRISPR-Cas systems has the potential to advance both basic and translational neuroscience research.National Institute of Mental Health (U.S.) (Grant 5DP1-MH100706)National Institute of Mental Health (U.S.) (Grant 1R01-MH110049)National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (U.S.) (Grant 5R01DK097768-03
Echocardiographic prognosis of right ventricular failure after implantation of a pediatric left ventricular assist device
ihrer klinischen Daten vergleichbar.
Introduction The number of implanted left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) is
constantly growing due to epidemiologic and demographic changes and the
decrease in heart transplantations performed. Right ventricular failure is the
most common complication in the early post-operative period after implantation
of a LVAD. For the prognosis of right ventricular failure multiple clinical
and echocardiographic criteria have been published in adult and pediatric
patients. To date, in the pediatric population no quantitative
echocardiographic parameter has been validated for the prognosis of right
ventricular failure after implanta-tion of an LVAD. Methods Retrospective
analysis of clinical and echocardiographic data from pediatric patients pre-
and post-implantation of an LVAD was performed. Right ventricular failure was
defined by the minimal central- or mixed-venous oxygen saturation, the maximal
dosage of catecholamines and the maximal central venous pressure during the
first 48 hours after implantation of the LVAD. Only patients with an evaluable
echocardiographic examination prior to implantation of the LVAD were included
into the study. Results Inclusion of 48 patients with a median age of 6,2
years was possible. The most common diagnosis was a cardiomyopathy, followed
by myocarditis and congenital heart diseases. The percentage of right
ventricular failure after implantation of the LVAD was 48 %. Patient data of
the groups with and without right ventricular failure were comparable. The
diagnosis and concomitant organ dysfunctions were not correlated with the
development of right ventricular failure. Among echocardiographic parameters
only the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE; p = 0.01) and the
ratio of TAPSE to the apico-basal diameter of the right ventricle (TAPSE /
RVEDD 3; p = 0.003) were correlated with right ventricular failure after LVAD-
implantation. Outcome of patients with and without right ventricular failure
after implantation of the LVAD was comparable. Conclusion The incidence of
right ventricular failure in the studied pediatric patients was higher than
the published data for adult patients, albeit lacking the relevance for the
outcome in the pediatric population. The ratio of TAPSE to RVEDD 3 might
facilitate the prognosis of right ventricular failure after implantation of an
LVAD in pediatric patients. The prognostic value of a singular two-dimensional
echocardiographic parameter should be reevaluated critically taking into
account the published data
