Timed to say goodbye : does unemployment benefit eligibility affect worker layoffs?
Este trabajo estudia el papel que desempeñan las condiciones de acceso a la prestación por desempleo sobre la tasa de despidos. Para ello, se explota la variación cuasi experimental en los criterios de elegibilidad para el subsidio de desempleo en Italia, a través de una estimación de diferencias en diferencias. Los resultados destacan que la probabilidad de despido aumenta alrededor del 12 % en el momento en que los trabajadores alcanzan la elegibilidad para el subsidio de desempleo, y ese efecto persiste durante 16 semanas. Estos resultados se mantienen utilizando diferentes estrategias de estimación, y se explican, en gran parte, por las relaciones laborales que empezaron después de la Gran Recesión, en el sur de Italia y en empresas pequeñas. Razonamos que la principal fuerza impulsora de este efecto es el riesgo moral por parte de las empresasWe study how unemployment benefit eligibility affects the layoff exit rate by exploiting quasiexperimental variation in eligibility rules in Italy. By using a difference-indifferences estimator, we find an instantaneous increase of about 12% in the layoff probability when unemployment benefit eligibility is attained, which persists for about 16 weeks. These findings are robust to different identifying assumptions and are mostly driven by jobs started after the onset of the Great Recession, in the South and for small firms. We argue that the moral hazard from the employer’s side is the main force driving these layoff
LIP: a workers’ community facing globalization
The aim of this article is to show how at the beginning of the 1970s a
community of workers in Besançon in France reacted to globalization.
It deals with the culture of the working class in a French province,
the level of organization of the community and how it reacted when
‘its’ factory was taken over by a multinational company. In seeking
to understand this transformation and how the workers perceived
it, it is crucial to investigate the changing role of the state. All these
aspects will be developed in the sections below with the aim of better
understanding the meaning of the strategy of workers’ resistance
in the face of a change that affected the community, the sector of
production, the region and, ultimately, the working class within the

The appeal of neo-fascism in times of crisis. The experience of CasaPound Italia
The present works sets up to analyze the relationship between radical right activism and the unfolding of the financial crisis in Europe, investigating the extent to which the current economic circumstances have influenced right-wing movements’ political supply and repertoires of action. Using the case study of the Italian neo-fascist group CasaPound, and based on a mix of historiography and ethnographic methods, the present work systematically analyzes the ways in which the group tackles the economic crisis. We find that the crisis offers a whole new set of opportunities for the radical right to reconnect with its fascist legacy, and to develop and innovate crisis-related policy proposals and practices. The crisis shapes the groups’ self-understanding and its practices of identity building, both in terms of collective rediscovery of the fascist regime’s legislation, and in terms of promotion of the fascist model as a ‘third way’ alternative to market capitalism. Even more importantly, the financial crisis plays the role of the enemy against which the fascist identity is built, and enables neo-fascist movements to selectively reproduce their identity and ideology within its practices of protest, propaganda, and consensus building
Chemical Composition and Antioxidant Properties of Five White Onion (Allium cepa L.) Landraces
Five onion landraces belonging toBianca di Pompeicv., cultivated in Campania region (Italy), were characterized for their main quality parameters. The onion landraces were harvested at the end of the growth cycle corresponding to the ripening time and harvest month, respectively: February, March, April, May, and June. The total content of volatile compounds as well as the sulfur-containing compounds inAprilaticawas significantly (p≤0.05) higher than the other landraces investigated. The nutraceutical feature investigated through the total phenols, phenols profile, and antioxidant activity showed higher values for the samples harvested in spring months. High pungency values ranging from 9 to 14 μmol/g FW were found in all onion landraces investigated as enzymatically (alliinase) produced pyruvate (EPY). The organic acids profile (malic, citric, succinic, pyruvic, oxalic, ascorbic, and tartaric acids) highlighted malic and citric acids in higher amounts in all landraces. Fructose, glucose, and sucrose were found as soluble sugars and fructose was the most abundant. Generally, the results highlighted the growth temperature influence on the investigated quality parameters
Multilayer Nanocomposite Polymetric Packaging For Microwave Applications
Microwaveable packaging material should ensure good preservation of the product before cooking/ heating such as high barriers to gases and aromas and adequate control of water vapor transmission. Among the polymers used in flexible packaging, crystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate) (CPET) is characterized by good oxygen barrier properties and quite high heat stability which ensures the absence of alterations of foods flavors. CPET trays or films are suitable for Ready To Cook (RTC) products within a temperature range from -40 to + 220°C. The aim of this work was the production and characterization of nanocomposite multilayer PET films, for microwave applications, in which the nanoclay acts as a heating enhancer. Films prototypes were made by means of laboratory compounding equipment for the production of nanocomposite CPET and by a co-extrusion equipment for producing multilayer films using two different PET copolymer matrices and a modified nanoclay (Cloisite 20A) as heating enhancer. The study of morphology of nanocomposite layer by means of X-ray diffraction experiments was carried out in order to correlate the intercalation/ exfoliation degree of nanoclay with cooking performance
Financial instability from local market measures
We study the emergence of instabilities in a stylized model of a financial
market, when different market actors calculate prices according to different
(local) market measures. We derive typical properties for ensembles of large
random markets using techniques borrowed from statistical mechanics of
disordered systems. We show that, depending on the number of financial
instruments available and on the heterogeneity of local measures, the market
moves from an arbitrage-free phase to an unstable one, where the complexity of
the market - as measured by the diversity of financial instruments - increases,
and arbitrage opportunities arise. A sharp transition separates the two phases.
Focusing on two different classes of local measures inspired by real markets
strategies, we are able to analytically compute the critical lines,

Impact of dealcoholization by osmotic distillation on metabolic profile, phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity of low alcoholic craft beers with different malt compositions
Beer antioxidants originate mainly from malts, classified as colored, caramel, and roasted, according to the malting process. This study aimed to characterize, in terms of phenolic antioxidants, three types of Pale Ale craft beers brewed using increasing percentage of dark malt (0, 5, and 15% Caraamber malt, called PA100, PA95, PA85, respectively) and to evaluate the impact of dealcoholization by osmotic distillation (OD) on the same antioxidants. All the alcoholic (PA, 6.2-6.8 vol %) and low alcoholic (LA-PA, 1 vol %) beers were analyzed by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant activity (AA): similar phenolic profiles were evidenced and 43 compounds identified or tentatively identified. Some differences were found among PA100, PA95, and PA85: PA85 was richer in free phenolic compounds (10.55 mg/L) and had a higher TPC (463.7 GAE mg/L) and AA (852.1 TE mg/L). LA-PA beers showed the same phenolic profile and similar TPC and AA compared to PA beers; however, there were some differences regarding LA-PA85 (5.91 mg/L). Dealcoholization by OD seemed to weakly affect the phenolic fraction. ESI-MS/MS infusion experiments evidenced oligosaccharides, small organic acids, and amino acids, whose presence was confirmed and quantitated by NMR: besides ethanol and other alcohols, weak to strong loss of low-molecular-weight metabolites was evidenced in LA-PA beers
PO-038 PDGFRβ as a new biomarker for metastatic triple-negative breast cancer: development of a theranostic anti-PDGFRβ aptamer for imaging and suppression of metastases
Introduction Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) are a heterogeneous group of aggressive tumours lacking oestrogen and progesterone receptors and HER2 receptor, thus excluding the possibility of using targeted therapy against these proteins. Mesenchymal-like (ML) subtype, characterised by a stem-like, undifferentiated phenotype, is more invasive and metastatic than other TNBC subtypes and has a strong tendency to form vasculogenic mimicry (VM). Recently, platelet derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRβ) has been shown to play a role in VM of TNBC. Regrettably, therapies targeting PDGFRβ with tyrosine kinase inhibitors are not effective in treating TNBCs, thus developing new strategies to target PDGFRβ in TNBC patients is crucial to improve their chances of survival. Here, we describe the characterisation of the Gint4.T anti-PDGFRβ nuclease-resistant RNA aptamer as high efficacious theranostic tool for imaging and suppression of ML TNBC metastases. Material and methods Immunohistochemical analyses on a human TNBC tissue microarray was performed to correlate PDGFRβ expression with clinical and molecular features of different subtypes. Functional assays were conducted on PDGFRβ-positive ML BT-549 and MDA-MB-231 cells to investigate the effect of Gint4.T in interfering with cell growth in 3D conditions, migration, invasion and VM formation. Gint4.T was conjugated with near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent VivoTag-S680 and its binding specificity to receptor was confirmed both in vitro (confocal microscopy and flow cytometry analyses of TNBC cells) and in vivo (fluorescence molecular tomography in mice bearing TNBC xenografts). MDA-MB-231 cells were i.v. injected in nude mice and Gint4.T-NIR was used to detect lung metastases in mice untreated or i.v. injected with Gint4.T or a scrambled aptamer. Results and discussions The expression of PDGFRβ was observed in human TNBC samples characterised by higher metastatic behaviour. Treatment of TNBC cell lines with Gint4.T aptamer blocked their invasive growth and vasculogenic properties in 3D culture conditions, and strongly reduced cell migration/invasion in vitro and metastases formation in vivo. The Gint4.T-NIR was able to specifically bind to TNBC xenografts and detect lung metastases in vivo. Therefore, the aptamer revealed a high efficacious theranostic tool for imaging and suppression of TNBC metastases. Conclusion These studies indicate PDGFRβ as a new biomarker for ML and metastatic TNBC subtype and propose a novel targeting agent for the diagnosis and treatment of metastatic TNBCs
