    Dynamical timescales in the Jupiter family

    Numerically integrated fictitious comets starting in orbits perihelion tangent to Jupiter have been used to estimate the duration of a typical visit to the observable Jupiter family of comets. The results show values of 3 to 6 thousand years, narrowing the previously estimated interval of 10(exp 3) to 10(exp 4) years

    Low-relative velocity and long-lasting encounters can dramatically change the orbital elements of a comet; the object could be temporarily bound to Jupiter for a period of several years. It is well stated that most of the discoveries of comets occurred just after a close encounter with the planet and a decrease of the perihelion distance of the comet. So, why don't we look for comets during close encounters with Jupiter rather than waiting to find them afterwards? To estimate the feasibility of this proposal, dynamical computations and observational analysis of the Jupiter family of comets were made. A criterion to distinguish comets during an encounter from other moving objects in the field is discussed

    Complexity of Two-Dimensional Patterns

    In dynamical systems such as cellular automata and iterated maps, it is often useful to look at a language or set of symbol sequences produced by the system. There are well-established classification schemes, such as the Chomsky hierarchy, with which we can measure the complexity of these sets of sequences, and thus the complexity of the systems which produce them. In this paper, we look at the first few levels of a hierarchy of complexity for two-or-more-dimensional patterns. We show that several definitions of ``regular language'' or ``local rule'' that are equivalent in d=1 lead to distinct classes in d >= 2. We explore the closure properties and computational complexity of these classes, including undecidability and L-, NL- and NP-completeness results. We apply these classes to cellular automata, in particular to their sets of fixed and periodic points, finite-time images, and limit sets. We show that it is undecidable whether a CA in d >= 2 has a periodic point of a given period, and that certain ``local lattice languages'' are not finite-time images or limit sets of any CA. We also show that the entropy of a d-dimensional CA's finite-time image cannot decrease faster than t^{-d} unless it maps every initial condition to a single homogeneous state.Comment: To appear in J.     The study focuses on a case of company X which owns an oil terminal and a depot in one of the Northern European countries. Company X's facilities are surrounded by the facilities of other oil companies. In case of an accident caused by company X there would be potential liability claims for property damage and business interruption. Insurance risk assessment is a well-developed approach for insurance of a company’s own property; it is not normally used for liability risks. This study suggests methodology for determination of liability insurance values. Based on the obtained results and calculations of replacement values, the worst case scenario for company X was chosen. A new methodology was developed to determine liability insurance values in cases like that, including the total limit - maximum insurance value that can be claimed

    Measurement of line widths and permanent electric dipole moment change of the Ce 4f-5d transition in Y_2SiO_5 for a qubit readout scheme in rare-earth ion based quantum computing

    In this work the inhomogeneous (zero-phonon line) and homogeneous line widths, and one projection of the permanent electric dipole moment change for the Ce 4f-5d transition in Y_2SiO_5 were measured in order to investigate the possibility for using Ce as a sensor to detect the hyperfine state of a spatially close-lying Pr or Eu ion. The experiments were carried out on Ce doped or Ce-Pr co-doped single Y_2SiO_5 crystals. The homogeneous line width was measured to be about 3 MHz, which is essentially limited by the excited state lifetime. Based on the line width measurements, the oscillator strength, absorption cross section and saturation intensity were calculated to be about 9*10^-7, 5*10^-19 m^2 and 1*10^7 W/m^2, respectively. One projection of the difference in permanent dipole moment, Delt_miu_Ce, between the ground and excited states of the Ce ion was measured as 6.3 * 10^-30 C*m, which is about 26 times as large as that of Pr ions. The measurements done on Ce ions indicate that the Ce ion is a promising candidate to be used as a probe to read out a single qubit ion state for the quantum computing using rare-earth ions.Comment: 9 figures, 8 page

    Hyperestrogenism Affects Adult Height Outcome in Growth Hormone Treated Boys With Silver-Russell Syndrome

    Background: Intrauterine growth retardation and short stature are common features in Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS). Despite recombinant growth hormone (rGH) treatment, poor pubertal height gain, affecting adult height (AH), is common. This study investigated whether growth patterns and estrogen concentrations are associated with AH outcome in rGH treated SRS males.Methods: In this retrospective longitudinal single-center study, 11 males with SRS were classified as non-responders (NR = 6) or responders (R = 5), depending on AH adjusted for midparental height. Epigenetic analysis and longitudinal growth measures, including bone age, rGH related parameters, pubertal development, gonadotropins and estrogen concentrations, were analyzed until AH.Results: Pubarche before 9 years was only observed in one NR. At 10 years of age, there was no difference in gonadotropins between NR and R. However, estradiol (E2) concentrations at 10 years of age showed a strong association to AH adjusted for MPH (r = −0.78, p < 0.001). Serum E2 (pmol/L) was significantly higher in NR at ages 10 years [median (range) 2 (<2–5) vs. <2 (<2)], 12 years [23 (10–57) vs. 2 (<2–2)] and 14 years [77 (54–87) vs. 24 (<2–38)] but not at 16 years. Birth weight standard deviation score (SDS) was lower in NR [−4.1 (−4.7 to −2.1) vs. −2.7 (−3.3 to −1.7)]. Weight gain (SDS) until pubertal onset was greater in NR [2.4 (1.4–3.5) vs. 0.8 (−0.4 to 1.7)] and pubertal height gain (SDS) was lower in NR [−1.0 (−2.7–0.4) vs. 0.1 (−0.1 to 1.1)]. At AH, a number of NR and R had high E2 concentrations and small testes.Conclusion: Increased E2 concentrations at age 10, 12, and 14 years were associated to less pubertal height gain, thus affecting AH. Due to the small number of patients, the results need to be confirmed in larger cohorts. The finding of impaired testicular development stresses the need of hormonal evaluation as a complement to clinical and radiological assessment when predicting AH in males with SRS

    Accounting for Bacterial Overlap Between Raw Water Communities and Contaminating Sources Improves the Accuracy of Signature-Based Microbial Source Tracking

    Microbial source tracking (MST) analysis is essential to identifying and mitigating the fecal pollution of water resources. The signature-based MST method uses a library of sequences to identify contaminants based on operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that are unique to a certain source. However, no clear guidelines for how to incorporate OTU overlap or natural variation in the raw water bacterial community into MST analyses exist. We investigated how the inclusion of bacterial overlap between sources in the library affects source prediction accuracy. To achieve this, large-scale sampling – including feces from seven species, raw sewage, and raw water samples from water treatment plants – was followed by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The MST library was defined using three settings: (i) no raw water communities represented; (ii) raw water communities selected through clustering analysis; and (iii) local water communities collected across consecutive years. The results suggest that incorporating either the local background or representative bacterial composition improves MST analyses, as the results were positively correlated to measured levels of fecal indicator bacteria and the accuracy at which OTUs were assigned to the correct contamination source increased fourfold. Using the proportion of OTUs with high source origin probability, underpinning a contaminating signal, is a solid foundation in a framework for further deciphering and comparing contaminating signals derived in signature-based MST approaches. In conclusion, incorporating background bacterial composition of water in MST can improve mitigation efforts for minimizing the spread of pathogenic and antibiotic resistant bacteria into essential freshwater resources
