La literaratura oncológica veterinaria los clasificó confusamente dividiéndolos en neurofibromas, neurofibrosarcomas, schwannomas, neurinomas o neurilemmomas. Esta clasificación es extremedamente arbitraria ya que está basada en una extrapolación para tumores de nervios periféricos de medicina humana.     The novel mangrove environment and composition of the Amazon Delta

    Both freshwater floodplain (várzeas and igapós) forests and brackish-saline mangroves are abundant and well-described ecosystems in Brazil.1 However, an interesting and unique wetland forest exists in the Amazon Delta where extensive mangroves occur in essentially freshwater tidal environments. Unlike the floodplain forests found upriver, the hydrology of these ecosystems is driven largely by large macro-tides of 4–8 m coupled with the significant freshwater discharge from the Amazon River. We explored these mangroves on the Amazon Delta (00°52ʹ N to 01°41ʹ N) and found surface water salinity to be consistently <5; soil pore water salinity in these mangrove forests ranged from 0 nearest the Amazon mouth to only 5–11 at the coastal margins to the north (01°41ʹ N, 49°55′ W). We also recorded a unique mix of mangrove-obligate (Avicennia sp., Rhizophora mangle) and facultative-wetland species (Mauritia flexuosa, Pterocarpus sp.) dominating these forests. This unique mix of plant species and soil porewater chemistry exists even along the coastal strands and active coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean. Part of these unique mangroves have escaped current global satellite mapping efforts, and we estimate that they may add over 180 km2 (20% increase in mangrove area) within the Amazon Delta. Despite having a unique structure and function, these freshwater-brackish ecosystems likely provide similar ecosystem services to most mangroves worldwide, such as sequestering large quantities of organic carbon, protection of shoreline ecosystems from erosion, and habitats to many terrestrial and aquatic species (monkeys, birds, crabs, and fish)

    The mysterious oil spill in the northeastern coast of Brazil: tracking offshore seawater and the need for improved vessel facilities

    A scientific cruise between November 15 and December 18, 2019 aboard R/V Vital de Oliveira collected offshore seawater samples at 59 stations between the states of Ceará and Bahia. The objective was to identify hydrocarbon levels potentially associated with the mysterious oil spill that reached the northeastern coast of Brazil. Median concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHs, 0.79 µg L-1) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, 5.39 ng L-1) do not indicate contamination by crude oil and are comparable to baseline levels previously found in other areas of the Brazilian continental margin. The detailed composition of both groups of hydrocarbons revealed that some samples were contaminated during sampling and/or handling on-board. The data set presented herein highlights the difficulty in tracking small oil patches spread over a huge ocean area and, more importantly, the need for improving protocols of national research vessels used to collect seawater samples for trace organic analyses

    A combination of 0.5 mg/kg of methotrimeprazine, 0.1 mg/kg of midazolam and 100 mg/kg of a 10 per cent guaiphenesin solution was investigated for the induction of recumbency in 15 horses; the addition of 1.6 mg/kg of ketamine was also evaluated in 15 horses and anaesthesia was maintained with halothane in oxygen. The horses became recumbent quickly and smoothly and they recovered quietly, with little ataxia. Tachycardia occurred after induction, but no other changes from pre-operative values were observed until halothane in oxygen had been given, when hypothermia, hypotension, bradypnoea, hyperoxaemia, respiratory acidosis and decreased respiratory minute volume developed. Horses given ketamine in addition to methotrimeprazine, midazolam and guaiphenesin were easier to intubate and recovered more quickly than horses receiving only methotrimeprazine, midazolam and guaiphenesin

    FUNDAMENTOS: A telepatologia é considerada boa alternativa para consultas de segunda opinião. Sua implementação é desejável, mas estudos que confirmem sua aplicação prática são necessários. OBJETIVOS: Analisar a concordância entre os diagnósticos histopatológicos de dermatoses feitos com base em microfotografias digitais em comparação com a microscopia convencional. MÉTODOS: As lâminas de 135 pacientes foram avaliadas por dois consultores por meio de microscópio. Após quatro semanas, os mesmos consultores avaliaram 1.738 microfotografias digitais obtidas dessas lâminas. Estimou-se a taxa geral de concordância intraobservadores e interobservadores e obteve-se o índice Kappa com a categorização das dermatoses: dermatoses neoplásicas, dermatoses infectocontagiosas e não infectocontagiosas. RESULTADOS: A concordância do Consultor 1, que analisou lâminas ao microscópio versus imagens, foi de 88,1% (IC 95% = 81,5% - 93,1%). O Consultor 2 obteve concordância de 80,7% (IC 95% = 73,1% - 87%). A concordância interconsultores ao microscópio foi de 81,5% (IC 95% = 73,9% - 87,6%). A mesma análise por meio de microfotografias mostrou concordância de 85,9% (IC 95% = 78,9% - 91,3%). O índice Kappa, que avalia as dermatoses categorizadas, foi de 98,6% para o Consultor 1, de 93,1% para o Consultor 2, de 95,8% para interconsulta por imagens e de 95,9% para interconsultas ao microscópio óptico. Todos esses valores são considerados ótimos. CONCLUSÃO: A avaliação das microfotografias apresentou ótimo nível de reprodutibilidade quando comparada à microscopia tradicional, sendo uma opção viável para consultas de segunda opinião em dermatopatologia<br>BACKGROUND: Telepathology is considered a good alternative for a second opinion consultation. Its implementation is desirable, but studies to confirm its practical application are required. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the reproducibility of histopathologic diagnoses of skin diseases obtained through digital photomicrographs compared with conventional microscopy. METHODS: We evaluated the surgical specimens of 135 patients using an optical microscope. After 4 weeks, the same consultants independently evaluated a total of 1,738 digital photomicrographs obtained from the histopathological slides. We estimated the overall rate of intra and interobserver agreement, and the Kappa coefficient was obtained with the categorization of the skin diseases: neoplastic skin diseases, infectious-contagious skin diseases and non-infectious-contagious skin diseases. RESULTS: Consultant 1 obtained an agreement of 88.1% (95% CI = 81.5% - 93.1%) between conventional microscopy and images. Consultant 2 obtained an agreement of 80.7% (95% CI = 73.1% - 87%). The interobserver agreement for the microscopy analysis was 81.5% (95% CI = 73.9% - 87.6%). The same analysis using microphotography showed an agreement of 85.9% (95% CI = 78.9% - 91.3%). The Kappa coefficient, which evaluated the categorized skin diseases, was 98.6% for Consultant 1, 93.1% for Consultant 2, 95.8% for interconsultant analyses of images and 95.9% for interconsultant analyses using conventional optical microscopy. All of these values are considered optimal. CONCLUSION: The evaluation of microphotographs shows a good level of reproducibility when compared to traditional microscopy and, therefore, is a viable option for a second opinion consultation in dermatopatholog

    Accuracy in melanoma detection: A 10-year multicenter survey

    Background: Early excision is the only strategy to reduce melanoma mortality, but unnecessary excision of benign lesions increases morbidity and healthcare costs. Objective: To assess accuracy in melanoma detection based on number-needed-to-excise (NNE) values over a 10-year period. Methods: Information was retrieved on all histopathologically confirmed cutaneous melanomas or melanocytic nevi that were excised between 1998 and 2007 at participating clinics. NNE values were calculated by dividing the total number of excised lesions by the number of melanomas. Analyses included changes in NNE over time, differences in NNE between specialized clinical settings (SCS) versus non-specialized clinical settings (NSCS), and patient factors influencing NNE. Results: The participating clinics contributed a total of 300,215 cases, including 17,172 melanomas and 283,043 melanocytic nevi. The overall NNE values achieved in SCS and NSCS in the 10-year period were 8.7 and 29.4, respectively. The NNE improved over time in SCS (from 12.8 to 6.8), but appeared unchanged in NSCS. Most of the effect on NNE in SCS was due to a greater number of excised melanomas. Higher NNE values were observed in patients younger than 40 years and for lesions located on the trunk. Limitations: No data concerning the use of dermatoscopy and digital monitoring procedures were collected from the participating centers. Conclusion: Over the 10-year study period, accuracy in melanoma detection improved only in specialized clinics maybe because of a larger use of new diagnostic techniques such as dermatoscopy. © 2012 by the American Academy of Dermatology, Inc
