The response function of a sphere in a viscoelastic two-fluid medium
In order to address basic questions of importance to microrheology, we study
the dynamics of a rigid sphere embedded in a model viscoelastic medium
consisting of an elastic network permeated by a viscous fluid. We calculate the
complete response of a single bead in this medium to an external force and
compare the result to the commonly-accepted, generalized Stokes-Einstein
relation (GSER). We find that our response function is well approximated by the
GSER only within a particular frequency range determined by the material
parameters of both the bead and the network. We then discuss the relevance of
this result to recent experiments. Finally we discuss the approximations made
in our solution of the response function by comparing our results to the exact
solution for the response function of a bead in a viscous (Newtonian) fluid.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
The discovery of lensed radio and x-ray sources behind the frontier fields cluster MACS J0717.5+3745 with the JVLA and Chandra
© 2016. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.. We report on high-resolution JVLA and Chandra observations of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Frontier Cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. MACS J0717.5+3745 offers the largest contiguous magnified area of any known cluster, making it a promising target to search for lensed radio and X-ray sources. With the high-resolution 1.0-6.5 GHz JVLA imaging in A and B configuration, we detect a total of 51 compact radio sources within the area covered by the HST imaging. Within this sample, we find seven lensed sources with amplification factors larger than two. None of these sources are identified as multiply lensed. Based on the radio luminosities, the majority of these sources are likely star-forming galaxies with star-formation rates (SFRs) of 10-50 yr -1 located at . Two of the lensed radio sources are also detected in the Chandra image of the cluster. These two sources are likely active galactic nuclei, given their 2-10 keV X-ray luminosities of ∼10 43-44 erg s -1 . From the derived radio luminosity function, we find evidence for an increase in the number density of radio sources at , compared to a sample. Our observations indicate that deep radio imaging of lensing clusters can be used to study star-forming galaxies, with SFRs as low as ∼10 M o yr -1 , at the peak of cosmic star formation history
Polarization coupling and pattern selection in a type-II optical parametric oscillator
We study the role of a direct intracavity polarization coupling in the
dynamics of transverse pattern formation in type-II optical parametric
oscillators. Transverse intensity patterns are predicted from a stability
analysis, numerically observed, and described in terms of amplitude equations.
Standing wave intensity patterns for the two polarization components of the
field arise from the nonlinear competition between two concentric rings of
unstable modes in the far field. Close to threshold a wavelength is selected
leading to standing waves with the same wavelength for the two polarization
components. Far from threshold the competition stabilizes patterns in which two
different wavelengths coexist.Comment: 14 figure
Cosmological evolution of interacting dark energy in Lorentz violation
The cosmological evolution of an interacting scalar field model in which the
scalar field interacts with dark matter, radiation, and baryon via Lorentz
violation is investigated. We propose a model of interaction through the
effective coupling . Using dynamical system analysis, we study the
linear dynamics of an interacting model and show that the dynamics of critical
points are completely controlled by two parameters. Some results can be
mentioned as follows. Firstly, the sequence of radiation, the dark matter, and
the scalar field dark energy exist and baryons are sub dominant. Secondly, the
model also allows the possibility of having a universe in the phantom phase
with constant potential. Thirdly, the effective gravitational constant varies
with respect to time through . In particular, we consider a simple
case where has a quadratic form and has a good agreement with the
modified CDM and quintessence models. Finally, we also calculate the

Interplay of structural and electronic phase separation in single crystalline La(2)CuO(4.05) studied by neutron and Raman scattering
We report a neutron and Raman scattering study of a single-crystal of
La(2)CuO(4.05) prepared by high temperature electrochemical oxidation. Elastic
neutron scattering measurements show the presence of two phases, corresponding
to the two edges of the first miscibility gap, all the way up to 300 K. An
additional oxygen redistribution, driven by electronic energies, is identified
at 250 K in Raman scattering (RS) experiments by the simultaneous onset of
two-phonon and two-magnon scattering, which are fingerprints of the insulating
phase. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show directly an
antiferromagnetic ordering below a N\'eel temperature of T_N =210K. The opening
of the superconducting gap manifests itself as a redistribution of electronic
Raman scattering below the superconducting transition temperature, T_c = 24K. A
pronounced temperature-dependent suppression of the intensity of the (100)
magnetic Bragg peak has been detected below T_c. We ascribe this phenomenon to
a change of relative volume fraction of superconducting and antiferromagnetic
phases with decreasing temperature caused by a form of a superconducting

UV and EUV Instruments
We describe telescopes and instruments that were developed and used for
astronomical research in the ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV)
regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength ranges covered by these
bands are not uniquely defined. We use the following convention here: The EUV
and UV span the regions ~100-912 and 912-3000 Angstroem respectively. The
limitation between both ranges is a natural choice, because the hydrogen Lyman
absorption edge is located at 912 Angstroem. At smaller wavelengths,
astronomical sources are strongly absorbed by the interstellar medium. It also
marks a technical limit, because telescopes and instruments are of different
design. In the EUV range, the technology is strongly related to that utilized
in X-ray astronomy, while in the UV range the instruments in many cases have
their roots in optical astronomy. We will, therefore, describe the UV and EUV
instruments in appropriate conciseness and refer to the respective chapters of

Digital Media Use: Differences and Inequalities in Relation to Class and Age
This paper takes a national perspective on issues of digital media use. The paper draws upon the OfCom Media Literacy 2013 survey to explore how digital media use varies in regard to two major social variables – class and age. Both class and age feature predominantly in UK policy on digital access and use. Class and age are invoked as either things that create barriers to access or as issues to be addressed and managed through using digital media. Despite the large body of work on the 'digital divide' there is a more limited literature that explicitly addresses class. The paper seeks to act as an empirical reference point for the development of further debate around the links between class and digital media use. The paper presents a factor analysis of the OfCom data that identifies five main areas of digital media use. These five factors are then subjected to a multiple analysis of variance to explore the effects across, between and within age and class categories. A cluster analysis based on the factors identifies seven main 'User Types' that are again compared across class and age. The paper finds that class and age act relatively independently as predicators of digital media use and neither compound nor mitigate each other's effects. Importantly the paper notes that the greatest levels and breadth of Internet use can be found in NRS social class groups AB and to an extent C1. In contrast the greatest levels of non-use and limited use can be found in NRS social class groups DE. In conclusion the paper notes that age still acts as the major explanatory variable for overall use and some specific types of use, but that class also independently acts to explain patterns of digital media use. As a result any simplistic policy expectations that digital access and use issues will become less relevant as age demographics change have to be questioned
Effects of dietary sulphur sources on concentrations of hydrogen sulphide in the rumen head-space gas of dairy cows
Estimating the frequency of volcanic ash clouds over northern Europe
Fine ash produced during explosive volcanic eruptions can be dispersed over a vast area, where it poses a threat to aviation, human health and infrastructure. Here, we focus on northern Europe, which lies in the principal transport direction for volcanic ash from Iceland, one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. We interrogate existing and newly produced geological and written records of past ash fallout over northern Europe in the last 1000 years and estimate the mean return (repose) interval of a volcanic ash cloud over the region to be 44 ± 7 years. We compare tephra records from mainland northern Europe, Great Britain, Ireland and the Faroe Islands, with records of proximal Icelandic volcanism and suggest that an Icelandic eruption with a Volcanic Explosivity Index rating (VEI) ≥ 4 and a silicic magma composition presents the greatest risk of producing volcanic ash that can reach northern Europe. None of the ash clouds in the European record which have a known source eruption are linked to a source eruption with VEI < 4. Our results suggest that ash clouds are more common over northern Europe than previously proposed and indicate the continued threat of ash deposition across northern Europe from eruptions of both Icelandic and North American volcanoes
