2D kinematics of the edge-on spiral galaxy ESO 379-G006
We present a kinematical study of the nearly edge-on galaxy ESO 379-G006 that
shows the existence of extraplanar ionized gas. With Fabry-Perot spectroscopy
at H-alpha, we study the kinematics of ESO 379-G006 using velocity maps and
position-velocity diagrams parallel to the major and to the minor axis of the
galaxy. We build the rotation curve of the disk and discuss the role of
projection effects due to the fact of viewing this galaxy nearly edge-on. The
twisting of the isovelocities in the radial velocity field of the disk of ESO
379-G006 as well as the kinematic asymmetries found in some position-velocity
diagrams parallel to the minor axis of the galaxy suggest the existence of
deviations to circular motions in the disk that can be modeled and explained
with the inclusion of a radial inflow probably generated by a bar or by spiral
arms. We succeeded in detecting extraplanar Diffuse Ionized Gas in this galaxy.
At the same time, from the analysis of position-velocity diagrams, we found
some evidence that the extraplanar gas could lag in rotation velocity with
respect to the midplane rotation.Comment: 61 pages, 15 figures. Accepted for publication in A
Systems and Methods for Noise Mitigation for Hybrid and Electric Aircraft
A system and method of noise mitigation for hybrid and electric aircraft, the aircraft having a controllable pitch propeller or rotor(s) with a plurality of blades. The propeller or rotor(s) are driven by a drive system to provide thrust for the aircraft, and the blades of the propeller or rotor(s) are further movable about pivot axis to vary a pitch thereof. A controller on-board the aircraft is operable to cause rotation or movement of the blades of the propeller or rotor(s) about their pivot axis to alter and/or focus at least one aspect of the propeller generated noise to reduce or mitigate such noise while maintaining a substantially constant thrust, altitude, and/or air speed of the aircraft

Socialization of the elderly in outdoor health circuits

Analysis of the sporting context of Spanish female competitive cyclists and triathletes
condiciones de competición de estas deportistasThe aim of this study was to know and compare the psychosocial characteristics
from Spanish under-licence female cyclists and triathletes establishing
guidelines to improve their situation in competitive sport. We compared two
sports with common aspects (use of a bicycle in competition, participants who
participate in both sports...) and differentiating ones (classic sport vs. modern),
with the aim of uncover potential differences and/or similarities between the two.
80 cyclists and 126 triathletes took part in this descriptive study. We determined
the average socio-demographic profile of cyclists and triathletes through 2 semistructured
questionnaires. The athletes’ average socio-sporting profile was
defined as a) amateur with a competitive tendency; b) who became specialised
in the sport at a late age; c) having vast sporting experience; d) having
completed, or completing, a high level of education; e) belonging to the middle
class. We believe a change in politics in sports federations is needed, as are
initiatives to improve competition conditions for these athletesEstudio financiado por el Ministerio de Educación y ciencia (AP2009-0529) y por la Real

Errors in kinematic distances and our image of the Milky Way Galaxy
Errors in the kinematic distances, under the assumption of circular gas
orbits, were estimated by performing synthetic observations of a model disk
galaxy. It was found that the error is < 0.5 kpc for most of the disk when the
measured rotation curve was used, but larger if the real rotation curve is
applied. In both cases, the error is significantly larger at the positions of
the spiral arms. The error structure is such that, when kinematic distances are
used to develope a picture of the large scale density distribution, the most
significant features of the numerical model are significantly distorted or
absent, while spurious structure appears. By considering the full velocity
field in the calculation of the kinematic distances, most of the original
density structures can be recovered.Comment: Accepted for publication in A
Development and Implementation of a Model-Driven Envelope Protection System for In-Flight Ice Contamination
Fatal loss-of-control (LOC) accidents have been directly related to in-flight airframe icing. The prototype system presented in this paper directly addresses the need for real-time onboard envelope protection in icing conditions. The combinations of a-priori information and realtime aerodynamic estimations are shown to provide sufficient input for determining safe limits of the flight envelope during in-flight icing encounters. The Icing Contamination Envelope Protection (ICEPro) system has been designed and implemented to identify degradations in airplane performance and flying qualities resulting from ice contamination and provide safe flight-envelope cues to the pilot. Components of ICEPro are described and results from preliminary tests are presented
Purification and characterization of a polygalacturonase produced by Wickerhamomyces anomalus
The aim of this work was to study the purification and physicochemical properties of an endo-polygalacturonase (PG) produced by Wickerhamomyces anomalus isolated from the citrus fruit peels. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity from the culture filtrate of W. anomalus grown on the yeast nitrogen base medium with glucose as carbon and energy source and citrus pectin as inductor. After anion-exchange chromatography and gel filtration chromatography, PG activity was eluted as a single peak, yielding 21% of the original activity. After dialysis and cation-exchange chromatography, only one fraction with PG activity was obtained, recovering 56% of initial enzyme activity and 1.3-fold increase in specific activity. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated as 43 kDa by the SDS-PAGE. The enzyme exhibited maximal activity at pH 4.2 and was stable over a pH range from 3.5 to 6.0 and up to 49°C for 10 h. The Vmax and Km values with polygalacturonic acid as substrate were 0.26 mmol/L. min and 0.173 mg/mL, respectively. Cations such as Cu+2, Fe+3, Mg+2, Mn+2 and Zn+2 did not show any significant effect on PG activity but K+ and Ca+2 reduced it. The purified PG was able to macerate cassava tissues.Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo en Fermentaciones Industriale
Specific increase of a mitochondrial RNA transcript in chronic ethanol-fed rats
AbstractAn in vitro transcription system utilizing isolated mitochondria has been used to study the effect of chronic ethanol consumption on liver mitochondrial DNA transcription. The results obtained showed an overall increase of RNA synthesis and a dramatic accumulation of a discrete polyadenylated RNA species. This effect is a consequence of the chronic ethanol consumption since these changes do not occur when isolated control mitochondria are incubated in the presence of ethanol
