The internal syntax of adjectival quantification in Romance

The theoretical framework of this paper is based on the Extended Adjectival Projection hypothesis first introduced by Corver (1997). In Absolute Measure Phrase constructions (AMPC), of the “2m tall” type, we argue that, in the Romance equivalent “alto de 2m”, the adjective first merges with the functional item ‘de’, and then with an inflected functional head, above the MP position. As there is independent motivation that this position is [Spec, QAP], we consider ‘de’ as a spell-out of the functional quantifier head QAº. We propose the Adjectival Linker Hypothesis (ALH), in which ‘de’ is a binding particle whose function is to allow the projection of absolute measurement expressions in Romance gradable adjectives syntax. The data resulting from the insertion of ‘de’ is then crossed with other adjectival expressions in Romance, Germanic and Scandinavian, in which the QA position is alternatively filled by different QA spell-outs. Further Romance data is then confronted with some cases of pseudopartitive adjectival ‘de’ in a Small Clause like configuration. We finally introduce a MP parameter to justify how variations affect the adjectival expressions of measurement across languages, and how and why the functional head QA may be null or filled with ‘de’, therefore postulating a phonetically null form as one of its various spell-outs. In the absence of an absolute MP and its related ALH, QA is alternatively filled with regular, lexical spell-outs such as superlative suffixes or autonomous morphemes. Lastly, in the case of relative MP expressions, a functional head DegA is lexically filled with a degree morpheme, switching the whole adjectival expression to a comparative form.publishe

Evocação de Ruy Belo na «Terra da Alegria»

Ruy Belo was Lecturer of Portuguese at Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 1971 to 1977. In this article, we study the poems he wrote during that period in which we may find allusions to Madrid (the land of joy to which the title alludes and, at the same time, a synecdoche of Spain), to the streets, squares, restaurants, cafés, theatres, the subway – everything associated with love experiences, portrayed in their contradictions and the effect they have, in moments of exultation or depression, on the perceptions of the surrounding environment by the poet. Allusions to Spanish authors in the poems are also taken into account in the article, especially in two long poems that celebrate Garcilaso, in which we can see how familiar the modern Portuguese poet is with the petrarchist code.Ruy Belo foi Leitor de Português na Universidade Complutense de Madrid, entre 1971 e 1977. International Business Research: Understanding Past Paths to Design Future Research Directions

In this paper we examine the extant research in IB by conducting a bibliometric study of the articles published in three leading international business journals – International Business Review, Journal of International Business Studies and Management International Review, over their entire track record of publication available in the ISI – Institute for Scientific Information. In longitudinal analyses of citation data we ascertain the most relevant works to the international business field. We also identify intellectual interconnectedness in co-citation networks of the research published in each journal. A second-tier analysis delves into publication patterns of those articles that are not at the top citation listings. Our results permit us better understand and depict the extant international business research and, to some extent, its evolution thus far.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Jejuno-jejunal invagination caused by epithelioid sarcoma: a case report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Jejuno-jejunal invagination is a rare condition and is usually caused by a benign lesion. We describe the case of a patient with a jejunal epithelioid sarcoma. Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare histologic subtype of sarcoma and few cases have been published.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 70-year-old Caucasian man presented with vomiting and anemia. A jejuno-jejunal invagination was diagnosed and the patient underwent surgery. An epithelioid sarcoma of the wall of the jejunum was found on the invaginated ansa.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, an epithelioid sarcoma has never been reported to arise at the wall of the proximal jejunum or to present with jejuno-jejunal invagination.</p

A propósito do PIB: do crescimento para a sustentabilidade

Congresso realizado na Universidade de Évora, de 14-6 de abril de 2014O produto interno bruto (PIB) foi considerado uma das grandes invenções do século XX. As críticas que entretanto suscitou já conduziram, mais do que à formulação de complementaridades ou correcções, à proposta da sua abolição liminar. Apesar de se manter central na análise económica e definição de políticas, multiplicam-se as tentativas de afirmação de uma lógica alternativa, com a sustentabilidade como motivação e objectivo. A contestação da pretensa objectividade e auto-suficiência do PIB remete, por um lado, para a relatividade dos valores, desde logo para a designada ideologia do crescimento, e, por outro, para a escala da análise. Trata-se tanto de reconhecer a finitude dos recursos disponíveis, que compromete a ideia do crescimento infinito ou ‘sustentável’, como de convocar uma lógica sistémica que situe a economia, e, por maioria de razões, a finança, dentro da sociedade e esta dentro do ambienteGross domestic product (GDP) was deemed one of the great inventions of the 20th century. Sintaxe e semântica dos adjectivos graduáveis em português

Doutoramento em LinguísticaEsta investigação representa um fragmento da gramática do Português, centrado na sintaxe e semântica do adjectivo. Depois da procura inicial de uma definição consensual do termo, em que se percorre a sua extensa genealogia, um primeiro conjunto de propostas desponta da observação de vários domínios do léxico em que a fronteira categorial entre adjectivos e nomes aparenta alguma fragilidade, sobretudo no caso dos "nomes adjectivos", dos "adjectivos nomes" e das "elipses do nome". Justifica-se então uma reformulação da tipologia das categorias lexicais adstrita à sintaxe generativa, no sentido de delimitar um conjunto de traços estritamente adjectivais e conclui-se que o adjectivo é uma "categoria emergente" no sentido em que a sua identidade lexical é parcialmente determinada pelas categorias funcionais com as quais compõe a estrutura sintáctica. A sintaxe interna dos predicados adjectivais graduáveis é então explorada. Resulta dessa análise que o sistema adjectival constitui, à semelhança dos domínios frásico, verbal e nominal, já descritos por autores como Abney (1987) e Pollock (1989) e ilustrado para as línguas germânicas por Corver (1997), um campo de aplicação aberto aos princípios minimalistas herdados de Chomsky (1995). Assim, pressupõe-se que a sintaxe da categoria que é tradicionalmente designada Sintagma Adjectival contém um Sintagma de Grau, um Sintagma Quantificador e um Sintagma de Concordância, além da categoria lexical A. A existência do conjunto de categorias funcionais adjectivais QA, DegA e AgrA não só descreve de forma convincente a gramática dos predicados graduáveis e justifica as restrições semânticas e sintácticas na sua combinação com expressões de medição, como permite ainda integrar a descrição da categoria na teoria subjacente. Sugere-se, no seguimento deste estudo sobre as construções adjectivais, que a linguagem manifesta propriedades de emergência típicas dos sistemas complexos. Os fenómenos subsequentes, como a auto-organização informacional, a retroacção entre níveis da estrutura de constituintes ou a irreversibilidade dos sistemas composicionais, devem em consequência, como se ilustra no fragmento de gramática adjectival aqui elaborado, ser considerados parte integrante da teoria gramatical.This research project centres on the syntax and semantics of gradable adjectives in European Portuguese. Once the quest for a consensual definition of the adjective is achieved in terms of historical genealogy, from origins of grammar to present theory, we first explore some edge-problematic domains of the adjectival category, namely those in which adjectives act as nouns and nouns act as adjectives, as well as some noun ellipsis data. A modification of the typology of lexical categories as used in generative syntax, aimed at identifying a set of adjective-specific features, is then proposed and it is claimed that the adjective is an "emergent category" in that its lexical identity is partially determined by merging with functional categories. We then explore the internal syntax of gradable adjectival predicates and conclude that the adjectival system, as has been proposed for the phrasal, verbal and nominal domains since Abney (1987) and Pollock (1989) and explored by Corver (1997) for Germanic languages, is an opened field to most minimalist assumptions based on Chomsky (1995). We then propose that the syntax of the so-called Adjective Phrase contains a Degree Phrase, a Quantifier Phrase and an Agreement Phrase. We argue that the set of specific functional categories QA, DegA and AgrA can provide a strong description of the grammar of gradable predicates and fully justifies most semantic and syntactic restrictions in merging them with Measure Phrases in EP, and it is proposed that this category can be fully integrated in the previous theory. Following these hypothesis on adjectival constructions, we claim that language itself may exhibit emergency properties typical of all known complex systems. Derived phenomena, like information auto-organisation, downward causation between levels of phrase structure or irreversibility of compositional systems should then enter the core of the linguistic theory, as is shown in this fragment of adjectival grammar
