Ensemble Theory for Force Networks in Hyperstatic Granular Matter
An ensemble approach for force networks in static granular packings is
developed. The framework is based on the separation of packing and force
scales, together with an a-priori flat measure in the force phase space under
the constraints that the contact forces are repulsive and balance on every
particle. In this paper we will give a general formulation of this force
network ensemble, and derive the general expression for the force distribution
. For small regular packings these probability densities are obtained in
closed form, while for larger packings we present a systematic numerical
analysis. Since technically the problem can be written as a non-invertible
matrix problem (where the matrix is determined by the contact geometry), we
study what happens if we perturb the packing matrix or replace it by a random
matrix. The resulting 's differ significantly from those of normal
packings, which touches upon the deep question of how network statistics is
related to the underlying network structure. Overall, the ensemble formulation
opens up a new perspective on force networks that is analytically accessible,
and which may find applications beyond granular matter.Comment: 17 pages, 17 figure
A Hubble Space Telescope ACS Search for Brown Dwarf Binaries in the Pleiades Open Cluster
We present the results of a high-resolution imaging survey for brown dwarf
binaries in the Pleiades open cluster. The observations were carried out with
the Advance Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Our sample
consists of 15 bona-fide brown dwarfs. We confirm 2 binaries and detect their
orbital motion, but we did not resolve any new binary candidates in the
separation range between 5.4AU and 1700AU and masses in the range
0.035--0.065~Msun. Together with the results of our previous study (Martin et
al., 2003), we can derive a visual binary frequency of 13.3\%
for separations greater than 7~AU masses between 0.055--0.065~M_{\sun} and
mass ratios between 0.45--0.91.0. The other observed properties of
Pleiades brown dwarf binaries (distributions of separation and mass ratio)

Non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence: a longitudinal study of the relationship between NSSI, psychological distress and perceived parenting
Objective: The present study investigates whether either adolescents' psychological distress and/or perceived parenting predicted the occurrence of NSSI. Furthermore, the consequences of NSSI are examined in a three-wave longitudinal study. Design: The sample at time 1 (age 12) consisted of 1396 adolescent reports and 1438 parent reports. At time 2 (age 13), 827 adolescent reports and 936 parent reports were obtained. Time 3 (age 14) included 754 adolescent reports and 790 parent reports. Psychological distress of adolescents was measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Perceived parenting behaviors were examined by the Parental Behavior Scale and the Psychological Control Scale. Results: A total of 10% of the adolescents engaged in NSSI at least once before age 15. Higher psychological distress of adolescents at time 1 was associated with the presence of NSSI at time 2 or 3. The association between psychological distress at time 1 and perception of decreased parental rule setting at time 3 was mediated by the presence of NSSI at time 2. Conclusions: The present study showed that psychological distress at age 12 predicts NSSI over time and that parental awareness of NSSI changes the perception of parenting behaviors. Asymmetric Bethe-Salpeter equation for pairing and condensation
The Martin-Schwinger hierarchy of correlations are reexamined and the
three-particle correlations are investigated under various partial summations.
Besides the known approximations of screened, ladder and maximally crossed
diagrams the pair-pair correlations are considered. It is shown that the
recently proposed asymmetric Bethe-Salpeter equation to avoid unphysical
repeated collisions is derived as a result of the hierarchical dependencies of
correlations. Exceeding the parquet approximation we show that an asymmetry
appears in the selfconsistent propagators. This form is superior over the
symmetric selfconsistent one since it provides the Nambu-Gorkov equations and
gap equation for fermions and the Beliaev equations for bosons while from the
symmetric form no gap equation results. The selfenergy diagrams which account
for the subtraction of unphysical repeated collisions are derived from the
pair-pair correlation in the three-particle Greenfunction. It is suggested to
distinguish between two types of selfconsistency, the channel-dressed
propagators and the completely dressed propagators, with the help of which the
asymmetric expansion completes the Ward identity and is -derivable.Comment: 12 pages. 26 figure
Multi-wavelength polarimetric study towards the open cluster NGC 1893
We present multi-wavelength linear polarimetric observations for 44 stars of
the NGC 1893 young open cluster region along with V-band polarimetric
observations of stars of other four open clusters located between l ~160 to
~175 degree. We found evidence for the presence of two dust layers located at a
distance of ~170 pc and ~360 pc. The dust layers produce a polarization Pv
~2.2%. It is evident from the clusters studied in the present work that, in the
Galactic longitude range l ~160 to 175 degree and within the Galactic plane
(|b| < 2 degree), the polarization angles remain almost constant, with a mean
~163 degree and a dispersion of 6 degree. The small dispersion in polarization
angle could be due to the presence of uniform dust layer beyond 1 kpc. Present
observations reveal that in case of NGC 1893, the foreground two dust layers,
in addition to the intracluster medium, seems to be responsible for the
polarization effects. It is also found that towards the direction of NGC 1893,
the dust layer that exists between 2-3 kpc has a negligible contribution
towards the total observed polarization. The weighted mean for percentage of
polarization (Pmax) and the wavelength at maximum polarization ({\lambda}max)
are found to be 2.59 \pm 0.02% and 0.55 \pm 0.01 \mum respectively. The
estimated mean value of {\lambda}max indicates that the average size of the
dust grains within the cluster is similar to that in the general interstellar
medium. The spatial variation of the polarization is found to decrease towards
the outer region of the cluster. In the present work, we support the notion, as
already has been shown in previous studies, that polarimetry, in combination
with (U-B)/(B-V) colour-colour diagram, is a useful tool for identifying

Near-adiabatic parameter changes in correlated systems: Influence of the ramp protocol on the excitation energy
We study the excitation energy for slow changes of the hopping parameter in
the Falicov-Kimball model with nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. The
excitation energy vanishes algebraically for long ramp times with an exponent
that depends on whether the ramp takes place within the metallic phase, within
the insulating phase, or across the Mott transition line. For ramps within
metallic or insulating phase the exponents are in agreement with a perturbative
analysis for small ramps. The perturbative expression quite generally shows
that the exponent depends explicitly on the spectrum of the system in the
initial state and on the smoothness of the ramp protocol. This explains the
qualitatively different behavior of gapless (e.g., metallic) and gapped (e.g.,
Mott insulating) systems. For gapped systems the asymptotic behavior of the
excitation energy depends only on the ramp protocol and its decay becomes
faster for smoother ramps. For gapless systems and sufficiently smooth ramps
the asymptotics are ramp-independent and depend only on the intrinsic spectrum
of the system. However, the intrinsic behavior is unobservable if the ramp is
not smooth enough. This is relevant for ramps to small interaction in the
fermionic Hubbard model, where the intrinsic cubic fall-off of the excitation
energy cannot be observed for a linear ramp due to its kinks at the beginning

X Her and TX Psc: Two cases of ISM interaction with stellar winds observed by Herschel
The asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars X Her and TX Psc have been imaged at
70 and 160 microns with the PACS instrument onboard the Herschel satellite, as
part of the large MESS (Mass loss of Evolved StarS) Guaranteed Time Key
Program. The images reveal an axisymmetric extended structure with its axis
oriented along the space motion of the stars. This extended structure is very
likely to be shaped by the interaction of the wind ejected by the AGB star with
the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). As predicted by numerical
simulations, the detailed structure of the wind-ISM interface depends upon the
relative velocity between star+wind and the ISM, which is large for these two
stars (108 and 55 km/s for X Her and TX Psc, respectively). In both cases,
there is a compact blob upstream whose origin is not fully elucidated, but that
could be the signature of some instability in the wind-ISM shock. Deconvolved
images of X Her and TX Psc reveal several discrete structures along the
outermost filaments, which could be Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices. Finally, TX Psc
is surrounded by an almost circular ring (the signature of the termination
shock?) that contrasts with the outer, more structured filaments. A similar
inner circular structure seems to be present in X Her as well, albeit less

Persistence in the One-Dimensional A+B -> 0 Reaction-Diffusion Model
The persistence properties of a set of random walkers obeying the A+B -> 0
reaction, with equal initial density of particles and homogeneous initial
conditions, is studied using two definitions of persistence. The probability,
P(t), that an annihilation process has not occurred at a given site has the
asymptotic form , where is the
persistence exponent (``type I persistence''). We argue that, for a density of
particles , this non-trivial exponent is identical to that governing
the persistence properties of the one-dimensional diffusion equation, where
. In the case of an initially low density, , we find asymptotically. The probability that a site
remains unvisited by any random walker (``type II persistence'') is also
investigated and found to decay with a stretched exponential form, , provided . A heuristic argument
