Hausdorff dimension of repellors in low sensitive systems

Methods to estimate the Hausdorff dimension of invariant sets of scattering systems are presented. Based on the levels' hierarchical structure of the time delay function, these techniques can be used in systems whose future-invariant-set codimensions are approximately equal to or greater than one. The discussion is illustrated by a numerical example of a scatterer built with four hard spheres located at the vertices of a regular tetrahedron.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Physics Letters

İngilizce Öğrenen Türklerin Şikâyet Söz Eylemi Üzerine bir Çalışma

    Get PDF
The current study investigates whether or how Turkish learners of English (TLEs) transfer pragmatic knowledge from their native language into English when performing the speech act of complaining. A total of 3000 written responses collected from TLEs and native speakers of both English (ENSs) and Turkish (TNSs) via a ten-item discourse completion task were analyzed. The study points to diverse results: it reveals that (1) requests, hints, and annoyance are the most commonly-used strategies by all three groups. (2) TLEs use the strategies hints, ill consequences, direct accusation, and threats/warnings at frequencies that are closer to the ENSs’ frequencies, (3) the TLEs, ENSs and TNSs are statistically indistinguishable in their use of annoyance, blame (behavior), and blame (person), and finally (4) the TLEs use modified blame at an intermediate level with respect to the ENSs and the TNSs, reflecting weak negative pragmatic transfer.

Creation of quantum error correcting codes in the ultrastrong coupling regime

We propose to construct large quantum graph codes by means of superconducting circuits working at the ultrastrong coupling regime. In this physical scenario, we are able to create a cluster state between any pair of qubits within a fraction of a nanosecond. To exemplify our proposal, creation of the five-qubit and Steane codes is numerically simulated. We also provide optimal operating conditions with which the graph codes can be realized with state-of-the-art superconducting technologies.Comment: Added a new appendix sectio

Entrepreneurial attributes for success in the small hotel sector: a fuzzy-set QCA approach

    Get PDF
By examining small hotels in Spain, this research contributes to understanding how human capital, social capital, and contingency factors interact to build a success model based on high hotel occupancy rates, profit, and profit per employee. Human capital theory, social capital theory, and multilevel theory provide the theoretical basis for this research. The study used fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis applied to a sample of 51 small Spanish hotels. The results reveal the existence of different configurations that lead to the desired performance outcomes. Each configuration combines two or three causal conditions. The results also reflect the difficulties that small hotels may face in reconciling different performance objectives. This paper thus provides solutions for managers, who must make strategic decisions based on existing conditions both inside and outside their organisations. The findings discussed herein can thus help small hotels better define their performance objectives by considering their individual characteristics. The findings can also help new small hotel entrepreneurs better understand the conditions required for success in this highly competitive market.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Extended moment formation and magnetic ordering in the trigonal chain compound Ca3Co2O6

The results of electronic structure calculations for the one-dimensional magnetic chain compound Ca3Co2O6 are presented. The calculations are based on density functional theory and the local density approximation and used the augmented spherical wave (ASW) method. Our results allow for deeper understanding of recent experimental findings. In particular, alternation of Co 3d low- and high-spin states along the characteristic chains is related to differences in the oxygen coordination at the inequivalent cobalt sites. Strong hybridization of the d states with the O 2p states lays ground for polarization of the latter and the formation of extended localized magnetic moments centered at the high-spin sites. In contrast, strong metal-metal overlap along the chains gives rise to intrachain ferromagnetic exchange coupling of the extended moments via the d_{3z^2-r^2} orbitals of the low-spin cobalt atoms.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures more information at http://www.physik.uni-augsburg.de/~eyert

Application of the extended P+QQ force model to NZN \approx Z fp shell nuclei

To study collective motion, the extended pairing plus QQQQ force model proposed recently is applied to AA=46, 48 and 50 nuclei in the fpfp shell region. Exact shell model calculations in the truncated model space (f7/2,p3/2,p1/2)(f_{7/2},p_{3/2},p_{1/2}) prove the usefulness of the interaction. The simple model with the pairing plus quadrupole pairing plus QQQQ force and JJ-independent isoscalar proton-neutron force reproduces unexpectedly well observed binding energies, energy levels of collective (yrast) states and reduced E2E2 transition probabilities in 46^{46}Ti, 46^{46}V, 48^{48}V, 48^{48}Cr, 50^{50}Cr and 50^{50}Mn. The correspondence between theory and experiment is almost comparable to that attained by the full fpfp shell model calculations with realistic effective interactions. Some predictions are made for energy levels and variations of B(E2)B(E2) in the yrast bands, in these nuclei. Characteristics of the interaction are investigated by comparing with the realistic effective interactions.Comment: 34 pages including 14 figure

ENSO effects on mean temperature in Turkey

Abstract. The ENSO effects on Turkish streamflow and precipitation patterns were previously analyzed by applying the t-test on eight standard seasons beginning with the JJA (-1) season of the year before the event year and ending with the MAM (+1) season of the year after the event year. The objective of this study is to identify the ENSO effects on the mean temperature data in Turkey by using the same methodology used for streamflow and precipitation. The methodology mainly comprises of two phases: first, composite analysis; and second, statistical t-test analysis. An overall result shown by this study is that the response of temperature to ENSO events was not much noticeable than those of the two hydroclimatological variables. Any positive anomaly could not be detected during the classical seasons of the event year, indicating that the mean temperature values occur below the average. The dominancy of cold anomaly conditions begins with the JJA (-1) season and continues until the DJF (+1) season. Furthermore the MAM (0) season has a maximum number of negative anomalies when compared to other cold anomaly seasons. Besides the positive anomaly conditions of streamflow and precipitation at the event year, the temperature values exhibited negative anomaly conditions at the same time period. In this study we aimed to determine whether there exists any relationship between temperature, streamflow and precipitation patterns of Turkey in terms of responding to the ENSO forcing. In conclusion, a sign of the tropical biennial cycle was, to some extent, evident surface climate variables

Transport Measurements on Nano-engineered Two Dimensional Superconducting Wire Networks

Superconducting triangular Nb wire networks with high normal-state resistance are fabricated by using a negative tone hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resist. Robust magnetoresistance oscillations are observed up to high magnetic fields and maintained at low temperatures, due to the eective reduction of wire dimensions. Well-defined dips appear at integral and rational values (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) of the reduced flux f = Phi/Phi_0, which is the first observation in the triangular wire networks. These results are well consistent with theoretical calculations for the reduced critical temperature as a function of f.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Selective 5-HT7 receptor agonists LP 44 and LP 211 elicit an analgesic effect on formalin-induced orofacial pain in mice

The most recently identified serotonin (5-HT) receptor is the 5-HT7 receptor. The antinociceptive effects of a 5-HT7 receptor agonist have been shown in neuropathic and inflammatory animal models of pain. A recent study demonstrated the functional expression of 5-HT7 receptors in the substantia gelatinosa (SG) of the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis, which receives and processes orofacial nociceptive inputs. Objective To investigate the antinociceptive effects of pharmacological activation of 5-HT7 receptors on orofacial pain in mice. Material and Methods Nociception was evaluated by using an orofacial formalin test in male Balb-C mice. Selective 5-HT7 receptor agonists, LP 44 and LP 211 (1, 5, and 10 mg/kg), were given intraperitoneally 30 min prior to a formalin injection. A bolus of 10 µl of 4% subcutaneous formalin was injected into the upper lip of mice and facial grooming behaviors were monitored. The behavioral responses consisted of two distinct periods, the early phase corresponding to acute pain (Phase I: 0–12 min) and the late phase (Phase II: 12–30 min). Results LP 44 and LP 211 (1, 5, and 10 mg/kg) produced an analgesic effect with reductions in face rubbing time in both Phase I and Phase II of the formalin test. Conclusion Our results suggest that 5-HT7 receptor agonists may be promising analgesic drugs in the treatment of orofacial pain

Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies from second order gravitational perturbations

    Get PDF
This paper presents a complete analysis of the effects of second order gravitational perturbations on Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, taking explicitly into account scalar, vector and tensor modes. We also consider the second order perturbations of the metric itself obtaining them, for a universe dominated by a collision-less fluid, in the Poisson gauge, by transforming the known results in the synchronous gauge. We discuss the resulting second order anisotropies in the Poisson gauge, and analyse the possible relevance of the different terms. We expect that, in the simplest scenarios for structure formation, the main effect comes from the gravitational lensing by scalar perturbations, that is known to give a few percent contribution to the anisotropies at small angular scales.Comment: 15 pages, revtex, no figures.
