    The mean curvature of cylindrically bounded submanifolds

    We give an estimate of the mean curvature of a complete submanifold lying inside a closed cylinder B(r)×RℓB(r)\times\R^{\ell} in a product Riemannian manifold Nn−ℓ×RℓN^{n-\ell}\times\R^{\ell}. It follows that a complete hypersurface of given constant mean curvature lying inside a closed circular cylinder in Euclidean space cannot be proper if the circular base is of sufficiently small radius. In particular, any possible counterexample to a conjecture of Calabion complete minimal hypersurfaces cannot be proper. As another application of our method, we derive a result about the stochastic incompleteness of submanifolds with sufficiently small mean curvature.Comment: First version (December 2008).     Infecção pelo Sugarcane yellow leaf virus causa alterações na eficiência fotossintética e acúmulo de carboidratos nas folhas de cana-de-açúcar

    Infection by Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (ScYLV) causes severe leaf symptoms in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) hybrids, which indicate alterations in its photosynthetic apparatus. To gain an overview of the physiological status of infected plants, we evaluated chlorophyll a fluorescence and gas exchange assays, correlating the results with leaf metabolic surveys, i.e., photosynthetic pigments and carbohydrate contents. When compared to healthy plants, infected plants showed a reduction in potential quantum efficiency for photochemistry of photosystem (PSII) and alterations in the filling up of the plastoquinone (PQ) pool. They also showed reduction in the CO2 net exchange rates, probably as a consequence of impaired quantum yield. In addition, reductions were found in the contents of photosynthetic leaf pigments and in the ratio chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b (chla/chlb). Carbohydrate content in the leaves was increased as a secondary effect of the ScYLV infection. This article discusses the relation of virus replication and host defense responses with general alterations in the photosynthetic apparatus and in the metabolism of infected plants.O vírus do amarelecimento foliar da cana-de-açúcar (Sugarcane yellow leaf virus, ScYLV) causa sintomas foliares severos e típicos de infecção por luteovirus, em cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.). Uma vez que alterações no sistema fotossintético da planta seriam esperadas, avaliaram-se a análise da emissão da fluorescência da clorofila a e as trocas gasosas durante a fotossíntese, relacionando esses dados com análises metabólicas, ou seja, conteúdos de pigmentos fotossintéticos e carboidratos presentes nas folhas. As plantas infetadas apresentaram redução na eficiência quântica fotoquímica potencial do fotossistema II (PSII) e alterações no preenchimento do pool de plastoquinona (PQ). Essas plantas apresentaram, também, redução nas taxas de troca líquida de CO2, provavelmente em conseqüência da redução na eficiência quântica. Paralelamente, reduções nos conteúdos de pigmentos fotossintéticos foliares e na razão clorofila a/clorofila b (chla/chlb) foram verificadas. Adicionalmente, o conteúdo de açúcares nas folhas foi aumentado, provavelmente como um efeito secundário da infecção viral. A relação entre a replicação viral e as respostas de defesa da hospedeira com as alterações encontradas no aparelho fotossintético e no metabolismo das plantas infetadas é discutida.101

    Automatic segmentation of the Foveal Avascular Zone in ophthalmological OCT-A images

    Angiography by Optical Coherence Tomography is a non-invasive retinal imaging modality of recent appearance that allows the visualization of the vascular structure at predefined depths based on the detection of the blood movement. OCT-A images constitute a suitable scenario to analyse the retinal vascular properties of regions of interest, measuring the characteristics of the foveal vascular and avascular zones. Extracted parameters of this region can be used as prognostic factors that determine if the patient suffers from certain pathologies, indicating the associated pathological degree. The manual extraction of these biomedical parameters is a long, tedious and subjective process, introducing a significant intra and inter-expert variability, which penalizes the utility of the measurements. In addition, the absence of tools that automatically facilitate these calculations encourages the creation of computer-aided diagnosis frameworks that ease the doctor's work, increasing their productivity and making viable the use of this type of vascular biomarkers. We propose a fully automatic system that identifies and precisely segments the region of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) using a novel ophthalmological image modality as is OCT-A. The system combines different image processing techniques to firstly identify the region where the FAZ is contained and, secondly, proceed with the extraction of its precise contour. The system was validated using a representative set of 168 OCT-A images, providing accurate results with the best correlation with the manual measurements of two experts clinician of 0.93 as well as a Jaccard's index of 0.82 of the best experimental case. This tool provides an accurate FAZ measurement with the desired objectivity and reproducibility, being very useful for the analysis of relevant vascular diseases through the study of the retinal microcirculation

    Concrete for precast blocks: binary and ternary combination of sewage sludge ash with diverse mineral residue

    [EN] This paper proposes binary and ternary combinations of sewage sludge ash (SSA) with fly ash (FA), marble dust (MD) and rice husk ash (RHA) as partial replacements of Portland cement in concretes with a similar dosage to that used in precast blocks, with very dry consistency. Several physical-mechanical tests were carried out on concrete specimens with curing ages of 28 and 90 days: density, water absorption, capillary water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity and compressive strength. The combinations of residues significantly improve the properties of the cementitious systems: 30% replacement of Portland cement provides strength values similar to the reference sample, showing the synergetic effects of the combination of the mineral additions. The significance of this research relies on the combined use of the mineral additions as well as the use of them for the precast block industry.     Spatially confined UHF RFID detection with a metamaterial grid

Here, we propose a new paradigm to confine the interrogation zone of standard UHF RFID systems. Our approach relies on the use of an all-planar metamaterial wire grid to block the radiation field (i.e., the far-field) of the reader antenna, and thereby obtain a spatially well-confined detection region in the near-field. This solution is analytically and numerically investigated, and then experimentally verified through near-field and tag-reading measurements, demonstrating its effectiveness and robustness under external perturbations

    El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar las progenies de las selecciones de árboles pertenecientes a rodales de Eucalyptus viminalis ubicados en la Provincia de Buenos Aires, productos comerciales locales de E.viminalis, y orígenes especí­ficos australianos del género Eucalyptus sugeridos y suministrados por CSIRO (División of Forestry and Forest Products. Australia) de acuerdo a las características edafo-climáticas del sitio de la prueba (el material recomendado correspondió a E. viminalis, E. dunnii y E.ovata). El ensayo fue implantado en Lobos, Provincia de Buenos Aíres, República Argentina a los: 35° 10' Latitud Sud; 59°07' Longitud Oeste; 50 metros sobre el nivel del mar (m snm). Comparando los resultados de los tratamientos y contraponiéndolos con otros similares de la región, las procedencias locales seleccionadas pueden ser conside­radas como un recurso seminal a tener en cuenta en los futuros planes de desarrollo de la zona. La estabilidad del comportamiento de las mismas y su eventual identificación como «razas locales», sugieren su posible incorporación a los planes de mejoramiento genético. E.dunnii, pese a su restringida área de distribución, presenta un disímil comportamiento entre los orígenes probados. E.ovata no puede descartarse teniendo en cuenta lo sucedido en las otras especies, por lo tanto deben probarse otros orígenes. Mientras se continua la introducción de especies, orígenes y procedencias, la superioridad de las selecciones locales sobre los productos utilizados comercialmente en la zona, hace que las primeras se constituyan en el nivel de referencia para fijar las respuestas mínimas de los materiales importados y suministrar al productor recursos con cierto grado de mejora.The objective of this work was to compare the progenies of the selections of trees belonging to E.viminalis stands loeated in Buenos Aires province, with australian origins of this species and of E.dunnii and E.ovata in respect of local commercial Products of E.viminalis.The australian material was provided by CSIRO (División of Forestry and Forest Products, Australia) in accordance with climatic and edaphic characteristics of the expermental site. The trial was situated in Lobos, Buenos Aires province, Argentine at 35° 10' South latitude, 59°07' West longitude, 50m. Comparing the treatment results and contrasting them with other similar ones of the región, the local provenance rightly selected can be considered as a seminal resource worthy to be taken into account in the future plans for the zone developmentThe behaviour stability of the local provenances selections and their identification as «local races- suggest the possibility of their incorporation to the genetic improvement plans.E.dunnii, in spite of its restricted native distribution area, presents dissimilar behaviours in its tested origins. E.ovata can't be discarded taking into account what happened to the other species, therefore other origins should be tested.     Automatic Visual Acuity Estimation by Means of Computational Vascularity Biomarkers Using Oct Angiographies

    [Abstract] Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) constitutes a new non-invasive ophthalmic image modality that allows the precise visualization of the micro-retinal vascularity that is commonly used to analyze the foveal region. Given that there are many systemic and eye diseases that affect the eye fundus and its vascularity, the analysis of that region is crucial to diagnose and estimate the vision loss. The Visual Acuity (VA) is typically measured manually, implying an exhaustive and time-consuming procedure.
