Antonio Fogazzaro’s Diario di viaggio in Svizzera

    Get PDF
Antonio Fogazzaro (1842-1911), known above all for his novels on naturalism, decadentism and spiritualism, such as Piccolo Mondo Antico, Piccolo Mondo Moderno and Il Santo, began his literary career in 1873 with the narrative poem Miranda. However, his first literary attempt is the Diario di viaggio in Svizzera, which remained unpublished until 2006. In relation to this work, in the line of the excellent edition of Fabio Finotti, this article studies the links with the tradition of the travel journal of the 18th and 19th centuries, with the milanese scapigliatura, and the anticipation of several passages of Fogazzaro’s works written in the years 1873-1895, such as Miranda, Malombra and Piccolo Mondo Antico

The frontier concept is omnipresent in over 250 literary works by Italian émigrés in Switzerland. But with the passage of time and the deline of the genre to a position of secondary importance, the frontier, from a form of discriminating between before and after, of displacing trauma, has been transformed into a metaphor of distance, of preparation either through pain and disease, or through spirituality and solidarity

Antonio Fogazzaro (1842-1911), known above all for his novels on naturalism, decadentism and spiritualism, such as Piccolo Mondo Antico, Piccolo Mondo Moderno and Il Santo, began his literary career in 1873 with the narrative poem Miranda.

    Get PDF
Un viaggio in Italia by Guido Ceronetti in 1983 breaks new ground in the odeporic genre, both for the originality of its structure, and for the strong critical reflection on the deterioration of the country, caused by speculative construction, pollution and moral corruption. By looking for 'another' Italy, one humble, secret, and different from the great cities of art, Ceronetti analyzes himself and the omnipresent struggle between Good and Evil. The present article aims to highlight these characteristics through a study of the genesis of the work, comparing the first unpublished drafts of the travel notebooks -kept at the Biblioteca Cantonale in Lugano- to the printed text of the Einaudi edition

    Le lettere familiari di Machiavelli

Unlike other humanists, Niccolò Machiavelli did not select his own letters with a view to creating a literary work (Epistles), nor did he even think to preserve them in a letterbook, preferring simply to store away some of the private and official correspondence he received from important figures of his day. Half a century after his death, his nephew Giuliano de’ Ricci sought out copies of his uncle’s letters among the archives of prominent Florentine families (the Tosinghi, Vettori and Guicciardini). The number of surviving letters written by Machiavelli himself is rather small (80) compared to the number of surviving letters he received (250), while next to nothing predates 1498, the year in which Machiavelli became Chancellor and Secretary of the Republic. A considerable gap separates the large number of surviving letters (more than 6,600) that Machiavelli wrote in his official capacity as ambassador and secretary and the small number surviving from his private correspondence. The letters can be divided in two time periods: from 1498 to 1512 and from 1513 to 1527. Those of the earlier period consist principally of correspondence with colleagues, relatives and officials; those of the later period, especially those sent to Francesco Vettori and Francesco Guicciardini, were often intended as a sort of “calling card” by which Machiavelli presented himself as a political scientist. Other private letters from this period, addressed to members of his family (brothers, sons and nephews), are expressive of Machiavelli’s enduring interest in politics, historiography, military affairs and the dramatic arts.

Changes in regional cerebral perfusion over time in idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder

Background Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder is associated with increased risk of neurodegeneration, but the temporal evolution of regional perfusion, a marker of cerebral activity, has not been characterized. The objective of the current study was to study longitudinal regional perfusion in patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. Methods Thirty‐seven patients and 23 controls underwent high‐resolution single‐photon emission computed tomography. After 17 months on average, scans were repeated for idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder patients. We compared regional cerebral blood flow between groups and over time. Results At baseline, patients showed lower relative regional perfusion in the anterior frontal and lateral parietotemporal cortex compared with controls. However, over time, patients showed an increase in relative regional perfusion in the anterior frontal, lateral parietal, and occipitotemporal cortex, reverting toward normal control levels. Conclusions Patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder showed significant areas of relative regional hypoperfusion, which disappeared over time to finally return to average levels, suggesting possible developing compensation in areas affected by neurodegeneration
