    International audienceDans la région de Montreuil-Bellay (Maine-et-Loire), de nombreuses coupes ont été réalisées au passage Callovien moyen-Callovien supérieur. Le premier banc attribué au Callovien supérieur a été daté de l'horizon à Leckenbyi. Il a fourni une très importante faune ammonitique (N=3125), dans laquelle les Perisphinctidae représentent 51% de l'effectif. À côté de formes plus ou moins bien connues comme Pseudopeltoceras leckenbyi (Bean), Orionoides pseudorion (Waagen), Subgrossouvria famulum (Bean) et S. crassa Gérard et Contaut, on trouve une espèce qui n'a jamais été ni décrite ni figurée : cette espèce fait l'objet du présent article. Choffatia isabellae n. sp. se distingue sans aucune ambiguité des Perisphinctidae contemporains par : 1) un long stade juvénile lisse, 2) une costulation habituellement ténue, 3) l'absence de formations paraboliques et 4) la très grande fréquence des constrictions. Comme cette espèce est inconnue dans les faunes de l'extrême sommet du Callovien moyen, nous pensons qu'elle a colonisé, avec beaucoup d'autres espèces, dont Peltoceras marysae Bonnot et alii, via la marge sud de la Téthys, la plate-forme nord-ouest européenne à la faveur de l'intervalle transgressif qui débute à l'extrême base du Callovien supérieur. Apparue brutalement à la base de l'horizon à Leckenbyi, cette nouvelle espèce possède son acmé dans la partie médiane de l'horizon, où elle peut représenter la moitié des Perisphinctidae, avant de devenir rare dans la partie supérieure de l'horizon, puis très rare dans l'horizon à Athleta

    Many outcrops exposing the Mid-Callovian/Upper Callovian boundary have been found near Montreuil-Bellay (Maine-et-Loire). The lowermost bed of the Upper Callovian has been dated as the Leckenbyi horizon. It contains an abundant ammonite fauna (3125 specimens), in which Perisphinctidae make up just over half of the specimens. In company with reasonably well-known species such as Pseudopeltoceras leckenbyi (BEAN), Orionoides pseudorion (WAAGEN), Subgrossouvria famulum (BEAN) and S. crassa GÉRARD et CONTAUT, occurs a species, previously unknown, which is described in this article. Choffatia isabellae n. sp. differs markedly from contemporary Perisphinctidae, for it is distinguished by : 1) a long, smooth juvenile stage, 2) weakly developed ribbing, 3) the absence of parabolic ornamentation and 4) a high frequency of constrictions. As this species is unknown in the fauna of the uppermost Middle Callovian, along with many other species, including Peltoceras marysae BONNOT et alii, it must have colonised the northwestern part of the European platform via the southern margin of the Tethys during the transgressive interval which started at the beginning of the Late Callovian. This new species appears abruptly at the base of the Leckenbyi horizon, reaches its acme in the middle of the horizon, where it probably represents half of the Perisphinctidae, before becoming rare in the upper part of the horizon, then very rare in the Athleta horizon.Dans la région de Montreuil-Bellay (Maine-et-Loire), de nombreuses coupes ont été réalisées au passage Callovien moyen-Callovien supérieur.     International audienceUsing flow cytometry measurements combined with quantitative analysis of cell cycle kinetics, we show that rhesus monkey embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are characterized by an extremely rapid transit through the G1 phase, which accounts for 15% of the total cell cycle duration. Monkey ESCs exhibit a non-phasic expression of cyclin E, which is detected during all phases of the cell cycle, and do not growth-arrest in G1 after gamma-irradiation, reflecting the absence of a G1 checkpoint. Serum deprivation or pharmacological inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) did not result in any alteration in the cell cycle distribution, indicating that ESC growth does not rely on mitogenic signals transduced by the Ras/Raf/MEK pathway. Taken together, these data indicate that rhesus monkey ESCs, like their murine counterparts, exhibit unusual cell cycle features in which cell cycle control mechanisms operating during the G1 phase are reduced or absent

    Proposition de candidature de la coupe de Thuoux (France) pour le GSSP de la base de l'étage Oxfordien

    La coupe de Thuoux, localisée en France dans le Bassin du Sud-Est, (coordonnées : 44°30'55"E; 5°42'25"N) satisfait à la majorité des critères demandés pour devenir le GSSP de la base de l'étage Oxfordien. La sédimentation est continue à l'échelle de l'horizon ammoniti-que et en particulier des horizons à Paucicostatum (MARCHAND, 1979) et à Thuouxensis (FORTWENGLER & MARCHAND, 1994a). Dans cette coupe, il y a un mélange constant entre les ammonites boréales (Car-dioceratinae) et les ammonites subboréales et sub-méditérranéennes (Hecticoceratinae, Peltoceratinae et Perisphinctinae) ce qui autorise de larges corrélations géographiques. De plus, la présence simultanée de ces 4 sous-familles permet un découpage temporel très précis et permet aussi de proposer des corrélations temporelles entre l'Europe Occidentale, le nord de l'Amérique (grâce aux Cardioceratinae) et l'Amérique du Sud (grâce aux Peltoceratinae). La forte épaisseur des sédiments à Thuoux a aussi permis des études sédimentologiques et une calibration astronomique de l'Oxfordien inférieur (BOULILA, 2008 ; BOULILA et al., 2008). Enfin, plus d'une trentaine de coupes ont été analysées en détail autour de Thuoux, ce qui augmente la fiabilité des résultats obtenus sur la coupe où la base de l'Oxfordien est visible (FORTWENGLER, 1989 ; FORTWENGLER & MARCHAND, 1994a, b, c, d).The Thuoux section, located in South-Eastern Basin of France (coordinates: 44°30'55"E; 5°42'25"N), is a section that satisfies numerous demanding criteria as reference section (GSSP) for the base of the Oxfordian stage. Sedimentation was continuous in that the abundant ammonitic fauna yields no detectable hiatuses. The stratigraphic boundary is located between the Lamberti Zone and the Mariae Zone or more precisely between the Paucicostatum horizon (MARCHAND, 1979) and the Thuouxensis horizon (FORTWENGLER & MARCHAND, 1994a). In this section, there is a perfect mixing bet-ween Boreal ammonites (Cardioceratinae) whose species are used as stratigraphic markers and Sub-mediterranean/Subboreal ammonites (Hecticoceratinae, Peltoceratinae and Perisphinctinae) that provi-de further possibilities for wide correlation of this boundary. Finally, parallel ammonite zonations have been established with great precision (biohorizons and sometimes "sub-biohorizons") in various areas of France, with different palaeoenvironments. The Thuoux section permits correlations with central and eastern Europe as well as North America, based on Cardioceratinae successions, and with South Ameri-ca, using Peltoceratinae. Thickness of the Callovian-Oxfordian transitional beds in the Thuoux section has allowed detailed sedimentological studies and astronomical calibration of the Lower Oxfordian (BOULILA, 2008; BOULILA et al., 2008). The Thuoux section is located at the centre of a set of more than thirty sections where the base of the Oxfordian stage is visible (FORTWENGLER, 1989; FORTWENGLER & MARCHAND, 1994a, b, c, d)

    The ammonite fauna of the 'marls with ferruginous fossils' from the Niort region, France (Lower Oxfordian, Cordatum Zone, Cordatum Subzone)

    A new collection of ammonites from the 'marls with ferruginous ammonites' in the Niort region (France), previously studied by GROSSOUVRE (1922), provides a large amount of biostratigraphic, paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic information. The fauna is dated Early Oxfordian: Cordatum Zone, Cordatum Subzone, probably the lower part of it. In addition, it is unique in western Europe owing to: 1) the species found of which some appear to be known only in this deposit 2) by the extremely atypical domination of the couple Taramelliceras - Creniceras which represent 2/3 of the specimens. Furthermore, the aspect of the fauna strongly suggests that the habitat was a distal platform unknown in other European strata of the same age. A detailed description of the several species is given, sometimes accompanied by a new taxonomic interpretation.Une nouvelle récolte d'ammonites dans les marnes à ammonites ferrugineuses de la région de Niort (France), autrefois étudiées par de GROSSOUVRE (1922), apporte de très nombreuses informations biostratigraphiques, paléoenvironnementales et paléobiogéographiques. La faune est datée de l'Oxfordien inférieur : Zone à Cordatum, Sous-Zone à Cordatum, partie inférieure probable. De plus, elle est unique en Europe occidentale 1) par les espèces trouvées -dont certaines ne semblent connues que dans ce gisement- 2) par la domination très atypique du binôme Taramelliceras - Creniceras qui représente les 2/3 des individus. Enfin, le spectre faunique plaide en faveur d'un milieu de plate-forme distale inconnu dans les autres gisements européens de même âge.     Novel Insights into the Bovine Polled Phenotype and Horn Ontogenesis in Bovidae

    Despite massive research efforts, the molecular etiology of bovine polledness and the developmental pathways involved in horn ontogenesis are still poorly understood. In a recent article, we provided evidence for the existence of at least two different alleles at the Polled locus and identified candidate mutations for each of them. None of these mutations was located in known coding or regulatory regions, thus adding to the complexity of understanding the molecular basis of polledness. We confirm previous results here and exhaustively identify the causative mutation for the Celtic allele (PC) and four candidate mutations for the Friesian allele (PF). We describe a previously unreported eyelash-and-eyelid phenotype associated with regular polledness, and present unique histological and gene expression data on bovine horn bud differentiation in fetuses affected by three different horn defect syndromes, as well as in wild-type controls. We propose the ectopic expression of a lincRNA in PC/p horn buds as a probable cause of horn bud agenesis. In addition, we provide evidence for an involvement of OLIG2, FOXL2 and RXFP2 in horn bud differentiation, and draw a first link between bovine, ovine and caprine Polled loci. Our results represent a first and important step in understanding the genetic pathways and key process involved in horn bud differentiation in Bovidae

    Allogeneic stem cell transplant in patients with acute myeloid leukemia and karnofsky performance status score less than or equal to 80% : A study from the acute leukemia working party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT)

    Limited data are currently available on the outcome of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) with a reduced performance status. We herein present the results of a registry study on 2,936 AML patients undergoing allo-SCT in first remission (CR1) with a Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score less than or equal to 80%. Two-year leukemia-free survival (LFS), overall survival (OS) and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)-free, and relapse-free survival (GRFS) rates were 54%, 59%, and 41%, respectively.     A belgian survey on the diagnosis of asthma– COPD overlap syndrome

    INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic airway disease may present features of both asthma and COPD, commonly referred to as asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS). Recommendations on their diagnosis are diffuse and inconsistent. This survey aimed to identify consensus on criteria for diagnosing ACOS. METHODS: A Belgian expert panel developed a survey on ACOS diagnosis, which was completed by 87 pulmonologists. Answers chosen by >/=70% of survey respondents were considered as useful criteria for ACOS diagnosis. The two most frequently selected answers were considered as major criteria, others as minor criteria. The expert panel proposed a minimal requirement of two major criteria and one minor criterion for ACOS diagnosis. Respondents were also asked which criteria are important for considering inhaled corticosteroids prescription in a COPD patient. RESULTS: To diagnose ACOS in COPD patients, major criteria were "high degree of variability in airway obstruction over time (change in forced expiratory volume in 1 second >/=400 mL)" and "high degree of response to bronchodilators (>200 mL and >/=12% predicted above baseline)". Minor criteria were "personal/family history of atopy and/or IgE sensitivity to >/=1 airborne allergen", "elevated blood/sputum eosinophil levels and/or increased fractional exhaled nitric oxide", "diagnosis of asthma /=10 pack-years for (ex-)smokers"; minor criteria were "lack of response on acute bronchodilator test"; "reduced diffusion capacity"; "limited variability in airway obstruction"; "age >40 years"; "emphysema on chest computed tomography scan". CONCLUSION: Specific criteria were identified that may guide physicians to a more uniform diagnostic approach for ACOS in COPD or asthma patients.
