Transport properties of saline CO2 storage reservoirs with unconnected fractures from brine-CO2 flow-through tests
CO2 storage in fractured reservoirs may lead to fast CO2 flow through interconnected fracture networks; but the role of isolated fractures on brine-CO2 multiphase flow systems remains unclear. We present the results of a brine-CO2 flow-through experiment in which we assess the change in transport properties of a synthetic sandstone plug (a surrogate of a saline siliciclastic CO2 reservoir) containing non-connected fractures aligned 45° from its axis. The test was performed at 40 MPa of constant hydrostatic confining pressure and ~11 MPa of pore pressure, at room temperature (~19.5 °C), using pure liquid-CO2 and 35 g L−1 NaCl salt solution. The injected CO2-brine volume fraction was increased from 0 to 1 in 0.2 units-steps (drainage). Upon achievement of the maximum CO2 saturation (SCO2 ~0.6), the plug was flushed-back with the original brine (imbibition). During the test, we monitored simultaneously pore pressure, temperature, axial and radial strains, and bulk electrical resistivity. The fractured sample showed lower values of cross- and end-points in the relative permeability curves to CO2 compared to non-fractured samples, from comparable experiments performed at similar pressure and brine salinity conditions, but different temperature. Our results suggest that a non-connected fracture network affects the mobility of the individual phases, favouring the trapping of CO2 in the porous medium and improving the storage efficiency of the reservoir. These evidences show the need of a better understanding of fracture connectivity prior to discard fractured reservoirs as unsuitable geological formations for CO2 storage
U B V R I Photometry of Stellar Structures throughout the Disk of the Barred Galaxy NGC 3367
We report new detailed surface U, B, V, R, and I photometry of 81 stellar
structures in the disk of the barred galaxy NGC 3367. The images show many
different structures indicating that star formation is going on in the most
part of the disk. NGC 3367 is known to have a very high concentration of
molecular gas distribution in the central regions of the galaxy and bipolar
synchrotron emission from the nucleus with two lobes (at 6 kpc) forming a
triple structure similar to a radio galaxy. We have determined the U, B, V, R,
and I magnitudes and U - B, B - V, U - V, and V - I colors for the central
region (nucleus), a region which includes supernovae 2003 AA, and 79 star
associations throughout NGC 3367. Estimation of ages of star associations is
very difficult due to several factors, among them: filling factor, metallicity,
spatial distribution of each structure and the fact that we estimated the
magnitudes with a circular aperture of 16 pixels in diameter, equivalent to
kpc. However, if the colors derived for NGC 3367 were similar to
the colors expected of star clusters with theoretical evolutionary star tracks
developed for the LMC and had a similar metallicity, NGC 3367 show 51 percent
of the observed structures with age type SWB I (few tens of Myrs), with seven
sources outside the bright surface brightness visible disk of NGC 3367.Comment: Accepted for publication (abr 2007) in The Astronomical Journal (July

Análisis de la convencionalidad del juzgamiento en ausencia en materia penal
This article analyses the international legality of the trial in absentia in the Colombian criminal procedure. Although the Colombian Constitutional Court hat affirms that this figure is accord to the Colombian Constitution, the authors of this article can affirm that the Colombian trial in absentia is against the due process of law as it is established in the international law of human rights.
Estimates of future warming-induced methane emissions from hydrate offshore west Svalbard for a range of climate models
Methane hydrate close to the hydrate stability limit in seafloor sediment could represent an important source of methane to the oceans and atmosphere as the oceans warm. We investigate the extent to which patterns of past and future ocean-temperature fluctuations influence hydrate stability in a region offshore West Svalbard where active gas venting has been observed. We model the transient behavior of the gas hydrate stability zone at 400–500 m water depth (mwd) in response to past temperature changes inferred from historical measurements and proxy data and we model future changes predicted by seven climate models and two climate-forcing scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways RCPs 2.6 and 8.5). We show that over the past 2000 year, a combination of annual and decadal temperature fluctuations could have triggered multiple hydrate-sourced methane emissions from seabed shallower than 400 mwd during episodes when the multidecadal average temperature was similar to that over the last century (∼2.6°C). These temperature fluctuations can explain current methane emissions at 400 mwd, but decades to centuries of ocean warming are required to generate emissions in water deeper than 420 m. In the venting area, future methane emissions are relatively insensitive to the choice of climate model and RCP scenario until 2050 year, but are more sensitive to the RCP scenario after 2050 year. By 2100 CE, we estimate an ocean uptake of 97–1050 TgC from marine Arctic hydrate-sourced methane emissions, which is 0.06–0.67% of the ocean uptake from anthropogenic CO2 emissions for the period 1750–2011
Purification and biochemical characterization of four iron superoxide dismutases in Trypanosoma cruzi
Four superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities (SOD I, II, III, and IV) have been characterized in the epimastigote
form of
Trypanosoma cruzi
. The total extract was subjected to two successive ammonium sulphate additions between
35 and 85%, and the resulting fraction was purified using two continuous chromatography processes (ion exchange
and filtration). Enzymes were insensitive to cyanide but sensitive to hydrogen peroxide, properties characteristic of
iron-containing SODs. The molecular masses of the different SODs were 20 kDa (SOD I), 60 kDa (SOD II), 50 kDa
(SOD III) and 25 kDa (SOD IV), whereas the isoelectric points were 6.9, 6.8, 5.2 and 3.8, respectively. Subcellular
location and digitonin experiments have shown that these SODs are mainly cytosolic, with small amounts in the low-
mass organelles (SOD II and SOD I) and the mitochondrion (SOD III), where these enzymes play an important role
in minimizing oxidative damage.Financial support: CGL2006-27889-E/BOS, Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología
