Geography, (M)Other Tongues and the Role of Translation in Giannina Braschi\u27s El imperio de los sueños

The Big Apple seems to be the central axis for the readerly and writerly I in El imperio de los sueños (Empire of Dreams), by Giannina Braschi. Readers can easily realize that the text is not just about New York, but that it actually journeys through praise and blame, drinking and dancing, talking and perversing many other cities and landscapes. El imperio is a space of bohemia with streaks from the Latin American Quarter in Paris, the barrio chino barcelonés, the zaguanes of Borges\u27s Buenos Aires, from colonial houses in Old San Juan; it evokes dandy places, the Madrid of the Profane Comedy, also, of course, an Empire State full of shepherds and other poetic voices. This textual geography, intertwined with socio-political maps and blueprints of different cultural systems and manners, leads to a boiling pot of literary references. In sync with its new maps of New York, Russia, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Latin America, El imperio represents Spanish as a strong and vivid character chiseled after many national and communal forms and frames of meaning; nothing along the lines of a preformulated vehicle for Braschi\u27s narrative and/or poetic acts. The text displays an endless mix-and-match of Puerto Rican idioms—both from the Island and from the Spanish spoken in New York by Puerto Ricans—with expañolismos, argentinismos, and other renditions of Spanish. The tongue of Spain, the madre patria, thus multiplies its performative potential and expands the role of translation. In El imperio Spanish is not just a process to move meanings beyond its lettered confinements, out of its grammatically correct boundaries, into another—or foreign—language, but a way to show off its own capacity for otherness

Violent and discriminatory conducts in teenagers and young people represent a social problem whose impact seems to maintain a certain tendency to increase. In this article the state of matter is examined referring to the expressions of the conducts with a higher impact and seriousness among young people. Then we relate them to the concept of Authoritarian attitude. Next, an analysis of the explanatory variables is presented, and some reflections for the social intervention in the approach and prevention of them are proposed.

On the local existence of maximal slicings in spherically symmetric spacetimes

In this talk we show that any spherically symmetric spacetime admits locally a maximal spacelike slicing. The above condition is reduced to solve a decoupled system of first order quasi-linear partial differential equations. The solution may be accomplished analytical or numerically. We provide a general procedure to construct such maximal slicings.Comment: 4 pages. During the taxonomic investigation of cold-adapted bacteria from samples collected in theAntarctic area of the South Shetland Islands, one Gram-reaction-negative, psychrotolerant, aerobic bacterium, designated strain M1T, was isolated from marine sediment collected onDeception Island. The organism was rod-shaped, catalase- and oxidase-positive and motile bymeans of a polar flagellum. This psychrotolerant strain grew at temperatures ranging from"46Cto 346C. Phylogenetic studies based on 16S rRNA gene sequences confirmed that Antarcticisolate M1Twas a member of the genusPseudomonasand was located in thePseudomonas fragicluster. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values were.98% between 13 type strainsbelonging to thePseudomonas fluorescenslineage. However, phylogenetic analysis ofrpoDgene sequences showed that strain M1Texhibited high sequence similarity only with respect toPseudomonas psycrophila(97.42%) andP. fragi(96.40%) and DNA-DNA hybridizationexperiments between the Antarctic isolate M1Tand the type strains of these two closely relatedspecies revealed relatedness values of 58 and 57%, respectively. Several phenotypiccharacteristics, together with the results of polar lipid and cellular fatty acid analyses, were used todifferentiate strain M1Tfrom related pseudomonads. Based on the evidence of this polyphasictaxonomic study, strain M1Trepresents a novel species, for which the namePseudomonasdeceptionensissp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M1T(5LMG 25555T5CECT 7677T)

γ-Aminobutyric acid treatments of pomegranate trees increase crop yield and fruit quality at harvest

γ-Aminobutyric (GABA) is a non-protein amino acid that has been reported to affect different plant developmental processes, including delay of fruit senescence and maintenance of quality when applied as postharvest treatment. In this experiment, GABA treatments (10, 50 and 100 mM) were applied by foliar spray to ‘Mollar de Elche’ pomegranate trees at three key points of fruit development. Results showed that GABA treatments increased crop yield in a dose-dependent way, this effect being due to a higher number of fruit harvested per tree. In addition, GABA treatments led to a deeper red colour of pomegranate skin and arils, the highest effects being observed for 100 mM dose. Total phenolic and total anthocyanin concentrations were also increased by GABA treatment, while other quality parameters such as total soluble solids, total acidity or firmness were not affected by treatments. Then, GABA preharvest treatment, applied at 100 mM, could be a useful tool to increase the economic profit of pomegranate crop, since higher yield and fruit with higher colour were obtained, which is an important quality parameter for this cultivar. In addition, aril total phenolics and anthocyanin content were increased, which would lead to enhance the antioxidant properties and health benefits for consumers

PICO DE PIEDRA DE LA EDAD DEL BRONCE HALLADO EN GRANADA

    Get PDF

Materiales y Métodos: Diseño no experimental, transversal, cuantitativo. Objective: To identify the influence that the perception on the factors of work context have on the psychological exhaustion of workers in Central East and South-Western Colombia in 2013. Materials and Methods: Non-experimental, cross-sectional and quantitative design. Non-probabilistic sample, selected for convenience, 193 workers from the working population of various business sectors. Instruments: battery for the study of working conditions of psychosocial character "CTCPS-MAC" validated for Iberoamerican population. It evaluates four dimensions: work context, work content, individual factors and psychological exhaustion, and includes 14 psychosocial factors. The research is descriptive, comparative and co-relational of multivariate type. Data analysis and results of the instruments were analyzed through IBM SPSS Statistics 21. Results: The organizational culture [p = 0.000 Exp (B) = 9.300] and technical training or higher education [p = 0.001 Exp (B) = 5.600] cause higher risk to end up in psychological cognitive-emotional exhaustion. At the behavioral level, the role [p = 0.000 Exp (B) = 30.714] and the interpersonal relationships at work [p = 0.001 Exp (B) = 16.381] are the exhaustion cause. The workers with technical training or higher education and a harmful perception of the company culture has a 70.70% chance of psychological cognitive-emotional exhaustion. A bad perception of the role and of interpersonal relationships represent a 35.10% possibility of psychological behavioral exhaustion. Conclusions: This study allows deeper understanding of psychosocial factors of work context and shows the importance that a good organizational culture and management, an appropriate role in the organization and good interpersonal relationships at work, have in achieving a healthy organization that promotes health and wellness in all its members
