A Generative Model for Concurrent Image Retrieval and ROI Segmentation

This paper proposes a probabilistic generative model that concurrently tackles the problems of image retrieval and region-of-interest (ROI) segmentation. Specifically, the proposed model takes into account several properties of the matching process between two objects in different images, namely: objects undergoing a geometric transformation, typical spatial location of the region of interest, and visual similarity. In this manner, our approach improves the reliability of detected true matches between any pair of images. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the links to the ROI provided by the true matches, the proposed method is able to perform a suitable ROI segmentation. Finally, the proposed method is able to work when there is more than one ROI in the query image. Our experiments on two challenging image retrieval datasets proved that our approach clearly outperforms the most prevalent approach for geometrically constrained matching and compares favorably to most of the state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the proposed technique concurrently provided very good segmentations of the ROI. Furthermore, the capability of the proposed method to take into account several objects-of-interest was also tested on three experiments: two of them concerning image segmentation and object detection in multi-object image retrieval tasks, and another concerning multiview image retrieval. Humanistic Education in Spanish Context. Its Value in the Secondary Classroom

In this paper, we report the fíndings of a coUaborative case study where an English teacher in the Spanish secondary school uses humanistic exercises to enhance motivation. Data coUection procedures such as audio-recorded lessons, language tests and motivation questionnaires were used leading to both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results indicate the usefiílness of these humanistic activities as key elements in fostering the type of meaningfiíl contextual interaction that promotes high motivation and selectivo attention. They also generated a sense of community and the emergence of coUaborative relationships. Therefore, more oral contributions in the target language were observed as leamers exhibited interest in expressing their feeling and thoughts

By introducing a latent variable that classifies the matches as true or false, we specifically focus on the application of geometric constrains to the keypoint matching process and the achievement of robust estimates of the geometric transformation between two images showing the same object. Our experiments in a challenging image retrieval database demonstrate that our approach outperforms the most prevalent approach for geometrically constrained matching, and compares favorably to other state-of-the-art methods. Public broadcasting service under austerity: cross-comparison between Portugal and Spain

Austerity policies were implemented, but the extent to which the bailout deal impacted the Portuguese and Spanish public service broadcasters has not been yet thoroughly investigated. Both born in dictatorial regimes, these public services broadcasters in democratic contexts followed different solutions for governance and funding. This article investigates the changes produced in the Portuguese and Spanish public media under the austerity era, analysing the policy measures implemented, as well as the economic and ratings performance of both public service broadcasters. The aim is to assess if external factors (such as external assistance) originated similar effects in both countries Results show that, in spite of different funding and governance models adopted, both public services were heavily impacted in terms of revenues and ratings and that the austerity period provided the context to set up a neoliberal ideological point-of-view. Contribución al estudio morfológico y anatómico en núculas de "mentha" l. y "preslia" opiz (lamiaceae) de la Península Ibérica

Contribución al estudio morfológico y anatómico en núculas de Mentha L. y Preslia Opiz (Lamiaceae) de la Península Ibérica. Se estudia la micromorfología y anatomía de núculas de tres especies de Mentha (M. aquatica L, M. suaveolens Ehrh., M. pulegium L.) y de Preslia cervina (L.) Fresen, tanto al microscopio óptico (M.O.) como al microscopio electrónico de barrido (M.E.B.). Desde un punto de vista morfológico, la diferencia principal entre ambos géneros ha sido la ornamentación de las núculas, siendo más o menos reticulada en Mentha y rugosa en Preslia. Anatómicamente, hay que destacar el grosor del pericarpo, que es bastante menor en Preslia. No obstante, el conjunto de caracteres estudiados pone de manifiesto la afinidad de estos géneros. Por último, se comenta brevemente los sistemas de dispersión más frecuentes en estos géneros

Estudio morfológico y anatómico en núculas de Nepeta L. (Lamiaceae) del suroeste de España. Se describe la micromorfología y la anatomía de las núculas en las cinco especies de Nepeta L. presentes en el suroeste de España: N. cataria L., N. amethystina var. anticaria Ladero & Rivas Goday, N. multibracteata Desf., N. tuberosa L. subsp. tuberosa y N. apuleii Ucria, tanto al microscopio óptico (M.O.) como al microscopio electrónico de barrido (M.E.B.). Los resultados han permitido diferenciar tres tipos estructurales atendiendo básicamente a la ornamentación de la núcula. Además, los caracteres anatómicos han permitido delimitar los taxones estudiados fundamentalmente a nivel del epicarpo, mesocarpo y capa en empalizada. La excreción de mucílago en las núculas de N. amethystina var. anticaria ha permitido diferenciar claramente este taxón. Así mismo, atendiendo a los caracteres carpológicos estudiados, se propone una clave para diferenciar los citados taxones

Micromorfología y anatomía de dos especies Mediterráneas del género Ajuga L. (Lamiaceae). Se ha estudiado la morfología y la anatomía de tres taxones mediterráneos del género Ajuga L.: A. chamaepitys (L.) Schreb., A. iva (L.) Schreb. var. iva y A. iva var. pseudo-iva (DC.) Benth. A. iva s. l. muestra núculas de reticuladas a alveoladas, y A. chamaepitys, de ligeramente crestadas a reticuladas transversalmente. La presencia de células esclerenquimáticas más o menos isodiamétricas y de tamaño variable formando una capa gruesa en el mesocarpo relacionan filogenéticamente este género con Verbenaceae. Así mismo, con los caracteres de las núculas, se propone una clave para diferenciar los citados taxone

Utilizamos esta exposición para meditar acerca de las líneas fundamentales que definen la verdadera naturaleza de la ciencia que debemos aprender y transmitir a nuestros alumnos de acuerdo con sus características. El concepto de NOS se deriva de la forma en la que los científicos construyen el conocimiento científico y en sus características. Nosotros iremos un paso más allá en cuanto a abstracción: nos apoyamos en el modelo de conocimiento de Piaget que, como veremos, coincide exactamente con el esquema introducido por Kuhn para explicar la construcción del conocimiento de las comunidades científicas.Peer reviewe

Motor eléctrico: una experiencia en el aula

Esteban Moreno Gómez es director de los recursos WEB del programa El CSIC en la Escuela.Presentamos un proyecto, desarrollado en el curso escolar 2013-14, que supuso el trabajo en el aula de conceptos relacionados con el electromagnetismo introducidos de manera experimental. El objetivo de este proyecto era que los alumnos y las alumnas realizasen un recorrido por la historia de esta ciencia para que llegaran a comprender, en último término, el desarrollo y funcionamiento del motor eléctrico. El proyecto tenía como objetivo que el alumnado realizase un recorrido por la historia de esta ciencia con el fin de llegar a comprender, en último término, el desarrollo y funcionamiento del motor eléctrico. En la experiencia participaron niños/as de distintas edades y ciclos educativos y de distintos centros; lo que implicó un trabajo de coordinación entre los distintos docentes. Una representación del alumnado participante presentó los resultados de sus investigaciones en el V Encuentro Científico entre Niños, Maestros e Investigadores celebrado el 27 de mayo de 2014.Peer reviewe
