Intercultural citizenship education in the English language classroom in higher education: Does it lead to language learning?
This paper reports a bilateral university project in the foreign language classroom designed to promote intercultural competence, language development and active and responsible citizenship through content-language integrated learning (CLIL). The rationale for broadening the scope of language courses and combining them with intercultural citizenship or human rights education rests on the idea that language teaching has instrumental (linguistic-oriented and communicative) purposes as well as educational purposes (development of critical thinking skills, development of the self and of the citizenship dimension) (Byram, 2014). Pedagogic proposals (Porto, 2015) and empirical studies reporting on classroom practice are recently available (Byram, Golubeva, Han & Wagner, 2016; Porto, 2014; Porto & Byram, 2015b). These studies have connected both types of education (language and citizenship/human rights) and have demonstrated growth in self/intercultural awareness, criticality and social justice responsibility, as well as the emergence of a sense of community among students during the projects. However, the concern remains as to whether this combination leads to language learning and this article addresses this issue.Instituto de Investigaciones en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociale

Evaluation of the presence of genes FLO1, FLO5, FLO9 and FLO11 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains
ABSTRACT: Since cell-cell attachment enables biomass separation from the fermentation product, flocculant ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains is a relevant characteristic for the ethanol industry, as it reduces operating times and costs. The capacity of S. cerevisiae to adhere to cells and abiotic surfaces is conferred by a specific group of cell wall proteins called adhesions, which are encoded by FLO gene family. The expression of these genes is associated to the response to some stress conditions that are common to both natural environments and industrial fermentations. This study evaluates the presence of genes FLO1, FLO5, FLO9 and FLO11 in S. cerevisiae strains, isolated from natural environments, and in turn, it demonstrates the importance of the identification of FLO genes in native strains for adequate control of flocculation in industrial fermentations.RESUMEN: La capacidad floculante en cepas de Saccharomyces cerevisiae es una característica importante para la industria del etanol ya que la unión célula-célula permite la fácil separación de la biomasa del producto de fermentación, reduciendo el tiempo y los costos operacionales.
The preservation of fruits and vegetables from harvest to commercialization is important both sanitary, and commercially. the results of a test exposure result Annona reported for 25 days at room temperature by two alternatives: a) the Annona enveloped with silver nanoparticles obtained from silver nitrate and extract wormseed b) the Annona unprotected. It was assessed by daily monitoring. After the experience, the samples were opened to visually evaluate the progress of deterioration from the skin to the heart of the fruit. The best results were obtained with the treatment of the wrapper with the nanoparticles. The annona nonenveloped with nanoparticles, as expected, showed the highest degree of impairment. antimicrobial activity of the nanoparticles was tested with the fruit of Annona name, grown, specifically in the municipality of Chietla, Puebla
As a result of different human activities, many metals end up dissolved in the waters, when their concentrations are higher than normal and produce harmful effects become pollutants. In this way, it is essential to eliminate them, or at least to reduce their impact. In this work the results obtained from the reduction of metals, copper, silver and zinc are reported, using the vegetal extracts of the Rose Leaf, Hierbabuena (Mentha piperita) and Ruda (Ruta graveolens). The reducing power of the extracts was checked through the formation of silver and copper nanoparticles, monitoring by the use of UV-Vis spectra. lt was possible to recover the silver in the form of clean and bright salid with good yields. Qualitative identification was made of the presence of flavonoids, phenolic acids which are secondary metabolites of many plants, and their antioxidant activity plays a fundamental role
Nurse-Led Interventions in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, causing 3.32 million deaths in 2019. COPD management has increasingly become a major component of general and hospital practice and has led to a different model of care. Nurse-led interventions have shown beneficial effects on COPD patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes. This systematic review was conducted to identify and assess nurse-led interventions in COPD patients in terms of mental, physical, and clinical status. The review was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. The relevance of each manuscript was assessed according to the inclusion criteria, and we retrieved full texts, as required, to reach our conclusions. Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers, and the risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Forty-eight articles were included in the analysis, which focused on the management of COPD patients by hospital, respiratory and primary nursing care. Nursing management was shown to be highly effective in improving quality of life, emotional state, and pulmonary and physical capacity in COPD patients. In comparison, hospital and respiratory nurses carried out interventions with higher levels of effectiveness than community nurses
Didactic Proposal with Ecological and Interdisciplinary Approach: a Commitment to Inclusive Higher Education
People with intellectual disabilities have had few opportunities to access higher education, for a long time it has been considered that they are not a potential group to be trained in the university environment. This article is derived from an investigation that was developed in the Colombian context, the purpose of which was to contribute to reducing the barriers of young people for their inclusion in the family, social, academic and occupational context, through the design and validation of a model of comprehensive care with an ecological and interdisciplinary approach. The study had a mixed methodological perspective, the ABAS II scale was used to evaluate the adaptive behavior index in 20 young people as a pretest and posttest. It was concluded that this experience contributed to the formation and quality of life of the young people; and it showed that all people can be taught, but that each one learns in their uniqueness.
Clinical validation of risk scoring systems to predict risk of delayed bleeding after EMR of large colorectal lesions
[Background and Aims]: The Endoscopic Resection Group of the Spanish Society of Endoscopy (GSEED-RE) model and the Australian Colonic Endoscopic Resection (ACER) model were proposed to predict delayed bleeding (DB) after EMR of large superficial colorectal lesions, but neither has been validated. We validated and updated these models.[Methods]: A multicenter cohort study was performed in patients with nonpedunculated lesions ≥20 mm removed by EMR. We assessed the discrimination and calibration of the GSEED-RE and ACER models. Difficulty performing EMR was subjectively categorized as low, medium, or high. We created a new model, including factors associated with DB in 3 cohort studies.[Results]: DB occurred in 45 of 1034 EMRs (4.5%); it was associated with proximal location (odds ratio [OR], 2.84; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.31-6.16), antiplatelet agents (OR, 2.51; 95% CI, .99-6.34) or anticoagulants (OR, 4.54; 95% CI, 2.14-9.63), difficulty of EMR (OR, 3.23; 95% CI, 1.41-7.40), and comorbidity (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, .99-4.47). The GSEED-RE and ACER models did not accurately predict DB. Re-estimation and recalibration yielded acceptable results (GSEED-RE area under the curve [AUC], .64 [95% CI, .54-.74]; ACER AUC, .65 [95% CI, .57-.73]). We used lesion size, proximal location, comorbidity, and antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy to generate a new model, the GSEED-RE2, which achieved higher AUC values (.69-.73; 95% CI, .59-.80) and exhibited lower susceptibility to changes among datasets.[Conclusions]: The updated GSEED-RE and ACER models achieved acceptable prediction levels of DB. The GSEED-RE2 model may achieve better prediction results and could be used to guide the management of patients after validation by other external groups. Compromising between European and US allergen immunotherapy schools: Discussions from GUIMIT, the Mexican immunotherapy guidelines
Background: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) has a longstanding history and still remains the only disease-changing treatment for allergic rhinitis and asthma. Over the years 2 different schools have developed their strategies: the United States (US) and the European. Allergen extracts available in these regions are adapted to local practice. In other parts of the world, extracts from both regions
and local ones are commercialized, as in Mexico. Here, local experts developed a national AIT guideline (GUIMIT 2019) searching for compromises between both schools.
Methods: Using ADAPTE methodology for transculturizing guidelines and AGREE-II for evaluating guideline quality, GUIMIT selected 3 high-quality Main Reference Guidelines (MRGs): the European Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (EAACI) guideines, the S2k guideline of
various German-speaking medical societies (2014), and the US Practice Parameters on Allergen Immunotherapy 2011. We formulated clinical questions and based responses on the fused evidence available in the MRGs, combined with local possibilities, patient's preference, and costs. We
came across several issues on which the MRGs disagreed. These are presented here along with arguments of GUIMIT members to resolve them. GUIMIT (for a complete English version, see Supplementary data) concluded the following:
Results: Related to the diagnosis of IgE-mediated respiratory allergy, apart from skin prick testing
complementary tests (challenges, in vitro testing and molecular such as species-specific allergens) might be useful in selected cases to inform AIT composition. AIT is indicated in allergic rhinitis and suggested in allergic asthma (once controlled) and IgE-mediated atopic dermatitis. Concerning the correct subcutaneous AIT dose for compounding vials according to the US school: dosing tables and formula are given; up to 4 non-related allergens can be mixed, refraining from mixing high with low protease extracts. When using European extracts: the manufacturer's indications
should be followed; in multi-allergic patients 2 simultaneous injections can be given (100% consensus); mixing is discouraged. In Mexico only allergoid tablets are available; based on doses used in all sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) publications referenced in MRGs, GUIMIT suggests a probable effective dose related to subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) might be: 50–200% of the monthly SCIT dose given daily, maximum mixing 4 allergens. Also, a table with practical suggestions on non-evidence-existing issues, developed with a simplified Delphi method, is added.
Finally, dissemination and implementation of guidelines is briefly discussed, explaining how we used online tools for this in Mexico.
Conclusions: Countries where European and American AIT extracts are available should adjust AIT according to which school is followed
