Development of data analytic capability in organizations
To compete in a globalized world, organizations need develop their data analytic capability. Using a review of the literature and case studies, this study examines how organizations acquire and orchestrate the necessary resources to build their data analytic capability in a way that fits their organization and context. The literature review identified six categories of assets and resources needed for the development of data analytic capability, namely data, data analytics, technology, structure and processes, management, and knowledge and skills. The case study findings showed that their impact is interlinked, with the presence of technical knowledge in the organization being essential
The Aggregate Dutch Historical Censuses
Historical censuses have an enormous potential for research. In order to fully use this potential, harmonization of these censuses is essential. During the last decades, enormous efforts have been undertaken in digitizing the published aggregated outcomes of the Dutch historical censuses (1795-1971). Although the accessibility has been improved enormously, researchers must cope with hundreds of heterogeneous and disconnected Excel tables. As a result, the census is still for the most part an untapped source of information. The authors describe the main harmonization challenges of the census and how they work toward one harmonized dataset. They propose a specific approach and model in creating an interlinked census dataset in the Semantic Web using the Resource Description Framework technology
Linking Dutch civil certificates
Finding and linking different appearances of the same entity in an open Web setting is one of the primary challenges of the Semantic Web. In social and economic history, record linkage has dealt with this problem for a long time, linking historical individual records at a local database level. With the advent of semantic technologies, Knowledge Graphs containing these records have been published, raising the need for large-scale linking techniques that consider the particularities of historical individual linking. In this paper we focus on our current investigation of such techniques to link the Dutch civil certificates in the LINKS/CLARIAH project. We describe the production of the LINKS Knowledge Graph, and we show its potential at answering domain research questions through its large number of owl:sameAs links
Genome-wide analysis identifies 12 loci influencing human reproductive behavior.
The genetic architecture of human reproductive behavior-age at first birth (AFB) and number of children ever born (NEB)-has a strong relationship with fitness, human development, infertility and risk of neuropsychiatric disorders. However, very few genetic loci have been identified, and the underlying mechanisms of AFB and NEB are poorly understood. We report a large genome-wide association study of both sexes including 251,151 individuals for AFB and 343,072 individuals for NEB. We identified 12 independent loci that are significantly associated with AFB and/or NEB in a SNP-based genome-wide association study and 4 additional loci associated in a gene-based effort. These loci harbor genes that are likely to have a role, either directly or by affecting non-local gene expression, in human reproduction and infertility, thereby increasing understanding of these complex traits
