    Examining the generalizability of research findings from archival data

    This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples

In modern times, we know all of the molecules that control the cell cycle and cell division, but we still do not understand how cell size is determined. To check whether modern cell biology has made any inroads on this age-old question, BMC Biology asked several heavyweights in the field to tell us how they think cell size is controlled, drawing on a range of different cell types.     Updates in the molecular pathology of non-small cell lung cancer

    An understanding of the molecular pathology of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is important for pathologists as molecular characterization is now required for treatment decisions in advanced stage disease. While assessment for EGFR mutations, ALK and ROS1 fusions, and in some countries BRAF mutations, is now standard practice, other oncogenic mutations are also emerging that may impact routine clinical practice including alterations involving KRAS, NTRK, RET, MET and HER2. In addition, molecular pathology alterations of NSCLC are associated with responses to immune checkpoint therapy and are being increasingly investigated. Finally, specific molecular pathological alterations define some rarer subtypes of NSCLC such as salivary gland tumours, NUT carcinoma and SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumour, and an understanding of the molecular pathology is important for their accurate diagnosis. In this review, the molecular pathology of NSCLC is discussed with a focus on clinically relevant molecular alterations

    Culture, COVID-19, and collectivism: A paradox of American exceptionalism?

    Do geographic differences in collectivism relate to COVID-19 case and death rates? And if so, would they also replicate across states within arguably the most individualistic country in the world-the United States? Further still, what role might the U.S.'s history of ethnic strife and race-based health disparities play in either reinforcing or undermining state-level relations between collectivism and COVID-19 rates? To answer these questions, we examined archival data from 98 countries (Study 1) and the 48 contiguous United States (Study 2) on country/state-level collectivism, COVID-19 case/death rates, relevant covariates (per-capita GDP, population density, spatial dependence), and in the U.S., percent of non-Whites. In Study 1, country-level collectivism negatively related to both cases (r = -0.28) and deaths (r = -0.40) in simple regressions; however, after controlling for covariates, the former became non-significant (r p = -0.07), but the latter remained significant (r p = -0.20). In Study 2, state-level collectivism positively related to both cases (r = 0.56) and deaths (r = 0.41) in simple regressions, and these relationships persisted after controlling for all covariates except race, where a state's non-White population dominated all other predictors of COVID-19 cases (r p = 0.35) and deaths (r p = 0.31). We discuss the strong link between race and collectivism in U.S. culture, and its implications for understanding COVID-19 responses

    A Cold-Sensing Receptor Encoded by a Glutamate Receptor Gene

    In search of the molecular identities of cold-sensing receptors, we carried out an unbiased genetic screen for cold-sensing mutants in C. elegans and isolated a mutant allele of glr-3 gene that encodes a kainate-type glutamate receptor. While glutamate receptors are best known to transmit chemical synaptic signals in the CNS, we show that GLR-3 senses cold in the peripheral sensory neuron ASER to trigger cold-avoidance behavior. GLR-3 transmits cold signals via G protein signaling independently of its glutamate-gated channel function, suggesting GLR-3 as a metabotropic cold receptor. The vertebrate GLR-3 homolog GluK2 from zebrafish, mouse, and human can all function as a cold receptor in heterologous systems. Mouse DRG sensory neurons ex- prc GluK2, and GluK2 knockdown in these neurons suppresses their sensitivity to cold but not cool temperatures. Our study identifies an evolutionarily conserved cold receptor, revealing that a central chemical receptor unexpectedly functions as a thermal receptor in the periphery

Para isso, os autores explicam como os governos militares fracassaram em reduzir a influĂȘncia das redes polĂ­ticas estaduais sobre a classe polĂ­tica e como os governadores remergiram e tornaram-se atores fundamentais para derrubar o regime autoritĂĄrio. Por fim, fornecem exemplos de como os interesses estaduais e os governadores tiveram papel-chave durante a transição e ainda continuam a tĂȘ-lo na polĂ­tica brasileira contemporĂąnea.<br>This article analyzes the increase in the power of state governors and the resurgence of the state-based interests of the members of the National Congress during Brazil's transition to democracy. The 1964-85 military regime's failure to reduce the influence of state-based interests and the reemergence of the state governors as powerful political actors in Brazil are explained. Examples are provided of how state interests and state governors have influenced the transition process and continue to play key roles in contemporary Brazilian politics
