    External knowledge resources and new venture success in developing economies : leveraging innovative opportunities and legitimacy strategies

    This study draws insights from entrepreneurial opportunity and organizational legitimacy perspectives to specify an intervening role of opportunity recognition and the contingency effect of entrepreneurial legitimacy to explain how and when external knowledge resources are associated with new venture performance. The conceptual model is tested on primary data from 230 new ventures operating in a sub-Saharan African economy: Ghana. Findings from the study indicate that the relationship between external knowledge resources and new venture performance is mediated by opportunity recognition and that high levels of both strategic and regulatory legitimacy strategies strengthen the indirect relationship.     Developing and utilizing coopetitive relationships : evidence from small and medium-sized enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa

    The study proposes the notion of coopetition capability as an ability to cooperate and compete with rival firms simultaneously. We draw on the tenets of the resource-based and dynamic capability theories as well as insights from in-depth qualitative studies of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in two Sub-Saharan African markets – Kenya and Zambia – to explore the conceptual domain of the coopetitive capability phenomenon. We further examine how external and internal environmental forces trigger the development of coopetition capability, and how coopetitive capability contributes to firm success outcomes. Findings from the study indicate that coopetitive capability is manifested in SMEs’ ability to proactively develop, coordinate, and learn from portfolios of inter-firm relationships with competitors. The study further finds that interactivities between regulatory requirements, customer demands, and firm-specific learning processes are major triggers of SMEs’ propensities to develop and benefit from coopetition capability.     Waiting time for cancer treatment and mental health among patients with newly diagnosed esophageal or gastric cancer: a nationwide cohort study

    Background Except for overall survival, whether or not waiting time for treatment could influences other domains of cancer patients’ overall well-being is to a large extent unknown. Therefore, we performed this study to determine the effect of waiting time for cancer treatment on the mental health of patients with esophageal or gastric cancer. Methods Based on the Swedish National Quality Register for Esophageal and Gastric Cancers (NREV), we followed 7,080 patients diagnosed 2006–2012 from the time of treatment decision. Waiting time for treatment was defined as the interval between diagnosis and treatment decision, and was classified into quartiles. Mental disorders were identified by either clinical diagnosis through hospital visit or prescription of psychiatric medications. For patients without any mental disorder before treatment, the association between waiting time and subsequent onset of mental disorders was assessed by hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval (CI), derived from multivariable-adjusted Cox model. For patients with a preexisting mental disorder, we compared the rate of psychiatric care by different waiting times, allowing for repeated events. Results Among 4,120 patients without any preexisting mental disorder, lower risk of new onset mental disorders was noted for patients with longer waiting times, i.e. 18–29 days (HR 0.86; 95% CI 0.74-1.00) and 30–60 days (HR 0.79; 95% CI 0.67-0.93) as compared with 9–17 days. Among 2,312 patients with preexisting mental disorders, longer waiting time was associated with more frequent psychiatric hospital care during the first year after treatment (37.5% higher rate per quartile increase in waiting time; p for trend = 0.0002). However, no such association was observed beyond one year nor for the prescription of psychiatric medications. Conclusions These data suggest that waiting time to treatment for esophageal or gastric cancer may have different mental health consequences for patients depending on their past psychiatric vulnerabilities. Our study sheds further light on the complexity of waiting time management, and calls for a comprehensive strategy that takes into account different domains of patient well-being in addition to the overall survival.This study was partly supported by the Swedish Cancer Society (grant No: CAN 2014/417).Peer Reviewe

    Quadratic effects of dynamic decision-making capability on innovation orientation and performance: Evidence from Chinese exporters

This study examines quadratic effects of three export decision-making approaches (planning, creativity and spontaneity) on innovation orientation, and the direct effect of innovation orientation on export market performance. The model, anchored in decision theory and dynamic capabilities, is tested on a sample of Chinese exporting firms using structural equation modelling. Findings indicate that while a greater proclivity to innovate is beneficial for export market performance, a more complex web of relationships is revealed between the three export decision-making approaches and innovation orientation, providing insights on the operationalization of a dynamic decision-making capability. Specifically, while an increasing level of export planning reduces an exporter's capacity to innovate, creativity has a positive direct effect on exporters’ innovation orientation, which also benefits from extreme spontaneity in export decision-making. We discuss theoretical contributions and export managerial implications of this dynamic decision-making capability for industrial marketing management

    Hybrid HIPIMS and DC magnetron sputtering deposition of TiN coatings: Deposition rate, structure and tribological properties

    High power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) has the advantage of ultra-dense plasma deposition environment although the resultant deposition rate is significantly low. By using a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system, a hybrid process consisting of one HIPIMS powered magnetron and three DC magnetrons has been introduced in the reactive sputtering deposition of a TiN hard coating on a hardened steel substrate, to investigate the effect of HIPIMS incorporation on the deposition rate and on the microstructure and mechanical and tribological properties of the deposited coating. Various characterizations and tests have been applied in the study, including XRD, FEG-SEM, cross-sectional TEM, Knoop hardness, adhesion tests and unlubricated ball-on-disk tribo-tests. The results revealed that, both the DC magnetron and hybrid-sputtered TiN coatings exhibited dense columnar morphology, a single NaCl-type cubic crystalline phase with strong (220) texture, and good adhesion property. The two coatings showed similar dry sliding friction coefficient of 0.8 – 0.9 and comparable wear coefficient in the range of 1 – 2× 10-15 m3N-1m-1. The overall deposition rate of the hybrid sputtering, being 0.047 μm/min as measured in this study, was governed predominantly by the three DC magnetrons whereas the HIPIMS only made a marginal contribution. However, the incorporated HIPIMS has been found to lead to remarkable reduction of the compressive residual stress from -6.0 to -3.5 GPa and a slight increase in the coating hardness from 34.8 to 38.0 GPa
