    Did Not Finish: Doctoral Attrition in Higher Education and Student Affairs

    Most students begin doctoral programs fully intending on completing the terminal degree. However, nearly half of the students who begin a doctoral program do not complete their degree. Attrition, or a decline in the number of students enrolled from the beginning to the end of a doctoral program, occurs throughout the degree. Some attrition is to be expected, and can be healthy. However, students may also choose to depart for negative reasons. Doctoral attrition is a relatively recent consideration in the literature, and previous literature had not considered the unique nature of higher education and student affairs programs. This dissertation study uses attribution theory to consider the research question: To what do people who voluntarily depart from doctoral programs in higher education attribute their departure? Through interviews of fifteen participants who chose to leave their doctoral programs, I developed four themes that led to the decision to depart: inflexibility of the degree, incongruence between program and participant goals, lack of advising and mentoring, and personal factors. In addition, I briefly address the impact of departure on the participants. In the discussion and implications section, I consider the role of attribution theory in the participants’ recollection about their departure, including locus of control, stability, and controllability. Further, I provide considerations and best practices for prospective and current students, higher education and student affairs programs, and graduate schools, including practical application of reference material and possible staffing considerations.     Mathematics Academic Achievement of Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

    The aim of this secondary data analysis study was to examine the association between certain predictors and student’s mathematics achievement on two tests of the Woodcock Johnson III Academic Knowledge subtests: Applied Problems and Calculations. Results indicated that students with a diagnosis of emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) had academic deficits in mathematics, and these deficits became larger over time. Data pertaining to mathematics academic achievement from the first two waves of the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2 (N = 420) were examined. The variables investigated to further explore academic achievement scores were gender, race/ethnicity, student’s school attended prior to the start of the study, and parent or guardian characteristics. Differences between gender and race/ethnicity are explained. Implications, limitations, and areas for future research are also presented

    Consistency of electron scattering data with a small proton radius

    We determine the charge radius of the proton by analyzing the published low momentum transfer electron-proton scattering data from Mainz. We note that polynomial expansions of the form factor converge for momentum transfers squared below 4m(pi)(2), where m(pi) is the pion mass. Expansions with enough terms to fit the data, but few enough not to overfit, yield proton radii smaller than the CODATA or Mainz values and in accord with the muonic atom results. We also comment on analyses using a wider range of data, and overall obtain a proton radius R-E = 0.840(16) fm

    Effects of mental health training on capacity, willingness and engagement in peer-to-peer support in rural New South Wales

    ISSUE ADDRESSED: Rural Australians experience significant barriers in accessing mental health services, some of which may be overcome by increasing mental health literacy in rural communities. This paper evaluates Mental Health Support Skills (MHSS), short training courses developed by the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP). MHSS was designed to build the capacity of community members and gatekeepers to identify people with mental health concerns and link them to appropriate resources or services. METHODS: Program data from April 2017 to March 2020 were analysed to assess the reach and outcomes of MHSS training. Training feedback was collected through a post‐training survey, completed directly after courses, and a follow‐up survey two months after training. An app used by RAMHP coordinators (the trainers) recorded the geographic and demographic reach of courses. RESULTS: MHSS was provided to 10,208 residents across rural New South Wales. Survey participation was 49% (n = 4,985) for the post‐training survey and 6% (n = 571), for the follow‐up survey, two months post‐training. The training was well‐received and increased the mental health understanding and willingness to assist others of most respondents (91%‐95%). Follow‐up survey respondents applied learnings to assist others; 53% (n = 301) asked a total of 2,252 people about their mental health in the two months following training. Those in clinical roles asked a median of 6 people about their mental health, compared to 3 for those in nonclinical roles. Most follow‐up survey respondents (59%, n = 339) reported doing more to look after their own mental health in the two months after training. CONCLUSION: These results are encouraging as they suggest that short‐form mental health training can be an effective tool to address poorer mental health outcomes for rural residents by improving the ability of participants to help themselves and the people around them. SO WHAT? Serious consideration should be given to short mental health courses, such as MHSS, to increase literacy and connection to services, especially in rural areas

    Transdisciplinary and arts-centred approaches to stewardship and sustainability of urban nature.

    This paper explores case studies of how artists working with scientists and land managers affiliated with the Urban Field Station Collaborative Arts Program (UFS Arts) are fostering new relations of care with urban nature and thereby informing landscape decisions. The 'wicked' problems related to sustainability demand novel, holistic approaches to transformation that engage multiple ways of knowing. We present 4 examples from UFS Arts by triangulating data across programmatic documentation, evaluation, and ethnographic materials from 2016-present. Matthew López-Jensen's Tree Love and Nikki Lindt’s Underground Sound Project sensitise us to the capacities of trees and forests through image and sound. Mary Mattingly’s Swale is a floating food forest that enacts new forms of community stewardship. The exhibition Who Takes Care of New York? maps the stories and practices of civic environmental groups. Three themes in these works suggest opportunities for transformation throughout the knowledge production cycle: posing novel questions, engaging multiple methodologies, and communicating ideas with the public. Through these transdisciplinary works, we learn things we could not have learned via traditional disciplinary or interdisciplinary work and assert that stewardship offers a pathway towards sustainability transforming management practices and landscape decisions by reshaping our relationships to community and the land

    The Host Galaxy and Redshift of the Repeating Fast Radio Burst FRB 121102

    The precise localization of the repeating fast radio burst (FRB 121102) has provided the first unambiguous association (chance coincidence probability pâ‰Č3×10−4p\lesssim3\times10^{-4}) of an FRB with an optical and persistent radio counterpart. We report on optical imaging and spectroscopy of the counterpart and find that it is an extended (0.6â€Čâ€Č−0.8â€Čâ€Č0.6^{\prime\prime}-0.8^{\prime\prime}) object displaying prominent Balmer and [OIII] emission lines. Based on the spectrum and emission line ratios, we classify the counterpart as a low-metallicity, star-forming, mrâ€Č=25.1m_{r^\prime} = 25.1 AB mag dwarf galaxy at a redshift of z=0.19273(8)z=0.19273(8), corresponding to a luminosity distance of 972 Mpc. From the angular size, the redshift, and luminosity, we estimate the host galaxy to have a diameter â‰Č4\lesssim4 kpc and a stellar mass of M∗∌4−7×107 M⊙M_*\sim4-7\times 10^{7}\,M_\odot, assuming a mass-to-light ratio between 2 to 3 M⊙ L⊙−1\,M_\odot\,L_\odot^{-1}. Based on the Hα\alpha flux, we estimate the star formation rate of the host to be 0.4 M⊙ yr−10.4\,M_\odot\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}} and a substantial host dispersion measure depth â‰Č324 pc cm−3\lesssim 324\,\mathrm{pc\,cm^{-3}}. The net dispersion measure contribution of the host galaxy to FRB 121102 is likely to be lower than this value depending on geometrical factors. We show that the persistent radio source at FRB 121102's location reported by Marcote et al (2017) is offset from the galaxy's center of light by ∌\sim200 mas and the host galaxy does not show optical signatures for AGN activity. If FRB 121102 is typical of the wider FRB population and if future interferometric localizations preferentially find them in dwarf galaxies with low metallicities and prominent emission lines, they would share such a preference with long gamma ray bursts and superluminous supernovae.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Published in ApJ Letters.     Radio-quiet quasars in the VIDEO survey : evidence for AGN-powered radio emission at S-1.4 GHz<1 mJy

    Understanding the interplay between black-hole accretion and star formation, and how to disentangle the two, is crucial to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. To investigate, we use a combination of optical and near-infrared photometry to select a sample of 74 quasars from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey, over 1 deg2. The depth of VIDEO allows us to study very low accretion rates and/or lower-mass black holes, and 26 per cent of the candidate quasar sample has been spectroscopically confirmed. We use a radio-stacking technique to sample below the nominal flux-density threshold using data from the Very Large Array at 1.4 GHz and find, in agreement with other work, that a power-law fit to the quasar-related radio source counts is inadequate at low flux density. By comparing with a control sample of galaxies (where we match in terms of stellar mass), and by estimating the star formation rate, we suggest that this radio emission is predominantly caused by accretion activity rather than star-formation activityPeer reviewe
