Vasily Dvortsov’s “Cain’s Kin” a novel not only about theatre
Предметом исследования является роман современного писателя В. В. Дворцова с загадочным заглавием Каиново колено. В статье показывается, как автор, проецируя на современную жизнь Советского Союза и новой России библейскую историю потомков Каина, показывает духовно-нравственный кризис русской интеллигенции, прежде всего из театральной среды. Главную причину духовной и профессиональной деградации своего героя – Сергея Розанова – писатель усматривает в его погоне за мирской славой и в несоблюдении Божьих заповедей.The subject of the present investigation is the novel by a contemporary author Vasily Dvortsov,
enigmatically titled ‘Kainovo koleno’ (‘Cain’s Kin’). In the article it is shown how the writer projects
the biblical story of Cain’s descendants onto the contemporary life in the Soviet Union and the
new Russia, thereby depicting the spiritual and moral crisis of the Russian intelligentsia, first of all
in the theatre milieu. The writer sees the causes of the spiritual and professional degradation of his
protagonist, Sergei Rozanov, in the latter’s pursuit of worldly fame and in his non-observance of
God’s commandments

The article contains a description of innovative systems for measuring the energy produced by the photovoltaic system and consumed by the building. The photovoltaic system consists of two micro-installations supplying two sectors of the Lublin Science and Technology Park. An internet platform for monitoring photovoltaic plant operation was presented. The power generated and the amount of electricity produced were assessed. Then, an innovative system for monitoring, analyzing the consumption and production as well as the efficient use of electricity in individual parts of the building was described.W artykule zawarto opis innowacyjnych systemów do pomiaru energii produkowanej przez system fotowoltaiczny oraz pobieranej przez budynek. Individualism and the social contract as expressions of the critical genesis of the state in light of the views of N. Machiavelli and Th. Hobbes
The article discusses modern theories of individualism as the basis of the social contract and hence as the source of the modern state. The author analyses N. Machiavelli’s and Th. Hobbes’ concepts of the state, which emerged as a response to a situation where scholastic visions of the state and the human being had lost their
appeal. He also draws attention to the fact that the study of human nature and the ways to control it is the goal of modern political philosophies and that passion as the driving force of human actions first appeared in political philosophical thought thanks to Machiavelli, later to be taken up and developed by Hobbes. According to Machiavelli, individualism is based in a specific self seeking fulfillment, which can attain set goals
thanks to two driving forces: virtue and fortune. Machiavelli’s individual treats others as objects; the goal of their actions is the desire for profit. Machiavelli’s thought—a prince establishes the state and devotes himself entirely to it (which is also good for the others as it takes them out of the state of war)—is taken up by Hobbes. A human being is guided by the senses—men have wants and desires. The life’s goal is self-fulfillment; the highest
good, self-preservation. As in Machiavelli, the pursuit of self-realization (striving for peace, that is avoiding war for fear of death) leads to the social contract. The social contract is not the common will of the society but a consensus reached by the parties regarding giving up some of the individual rights, that is a consensus reached by all individuals. Hence, by realizing the self, people realize peace, that is the highest good for individuals (of course, both the state of war and the state of peace are only hypothetical—constructs which justify the State, not empirical facts). In both views the prince is one (for himself), everybody can be the prince, and it is impossible not to want to be the prince (quitting the pursuit means death). The pursuit of the fulfillment of the ego
is the only course of action for the prince, and at the same time a course of action good for all other princes by virtue of the social contract. This is the meaning of the state—a contract between princes: always together and always apart
Response of development and body mass to daily temperature fluctuations : a study on Tribolium castaneum
Differences in thermal regimes are of paramount importance in insect development. However, experiments that examine trait development under constant temperature conditions may yield less evolutionarily relevant results than those that take naturally occurring temperature fluctuations into account. We investigated the effect of different temperature regimes (constant 30 °C, constant 35 °C, fluctuating with a daily mean of 30 °C, or fluctuating with a daily mean of 35 °C) on sex-specific development time and body mass in Tribolium castaneum. Using a half-sib breeding design, we also examined whether there is any evidence for genotype-by-environment interactions (GEI) for the studied traits. In response to fluctuating temperature regimes, beetles demonstrated reaction norm patterns in which thermal fluctuations influenced traits negatively above the species’ thermal optimum but had little to no effect close to the thermal optimum. Estimated heritabilities of development time were in general low and non-significant. In case of body mass of pupae and adults, despite significant genetic variance, we did not find any GEI due to crossing of reaction norms, both between temperatures and between variability treatments. We have observed a weak tendency towards higher heritabilities of adult and pupa body mass in optimal fluctuating thermal conditions. Thus, we have not found any biasing effect of stable thermal conditions as compared to fluctuating temperatures on the breeding values of heritable body-size traits. Contrary to this we have observed a strong population-wide effect of thermal fluctuations, indicated by the significant temperature-fluctuations interaction in both adult and pupa mass. Imago Christi or “just” Imago Mariae? Women and the Problem of Image and Imitation
The main question discussed in this paper is: Can we say that, in the light of orthodox Catholic theology, woman is an image of Christ in a way equal to man? How Jesus and His Mother should be treated as examples for imitation for Christians of both sexes on this ground? The first part of the article explains the terms imago Dei and imago Christi, and connection between them in their biblical, dogmatical, and contemporary theological-anthropological context, the last one understood strictly as anthropology in documents of the Catholic Magisterium published during and after II Vatican Council. The second part concerns the problem of Jesus and Mary as models for men, and/or women in the present day, on the basis of Church documents, especially Mariological ones. The third part considers the problem of women as imago Christi in the light of Catholic feminist theology. Machine-learning identification of galaxies in the WISExSuperCOSMOS all-sky catalogue
The two currently largest all-sky photometric datasets, WISE and SuperCOSMOS,
were cross-matched by Bilicki et al. (2016) (B16) to construct a novel
photometric redshift catalogue on 70% of the sky. Galaxies were therein
separated from stars and quasars through colour cuts, which may leave
imperfections because of mixing different source types which overlap in colour
space. The aim of the present work is to identify galaxies in the
WISExSuperCOSMOS catalogue through an alternative approach of machine learning.
This allows us to define more complex separations in the multi-colour space
than possible with simple colour cuts, and should provide more reliable source
classification. For the automatised classification we use the support vector
machines learning algorithm, employing SDSS spectroscopic sources cross-matched
with WISExSuperCOSMOS as the training and verification set. We perform a number
of tests to examine the behaviour of the classifier (completeness, purity and
accuracy) as a function of source apparent magnitude and Galactic latitude. We
then apply the classifier to the full-sky data and analyse the resulting
catalogue of candidate galaxies. We also compare thus produced dataset with the
one presented in B16. The tests indicate very high accuracy, completeness and
purity (>95%) of the classifier at the bright end, deteriorating for the
faintest sources, but still retaining acceptable levels of 85%. No significant
variation of classification quality with Galactic latitude is observed.
Application of the classifier to all-sky WISExSuperCOSMOS data gives 15 million
galaxies after masking problematic areas. The resulting sample is purer than
the one in B16, at a price of lower completeness over the sky. The automatic
classification gives a successful alternative approach to defining a reliable
galaxy sample as compared to colour cuts.Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. Obtained
