A nuclear RNA-binding cyclophilin in human T cells
AbstractCyclophilins (CyPs) are binding proteins for the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporin A (CsA). CyPs are evolutionarily highly conserved proteins present in both pro-and eukaryotes as well as in different subcellular locations. Cyps possess enzymatic activity, namely peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase (PPIase) activity; CyPs are involved in cellular protein folding and protein interactions. To date, only cyclosporins and proteins are known to interact with CyPs. Here we describe a novel nuclear cyclophilin (hCyP33) from human T cells with an additional RNA-binding domain. This combines for the first time RNA binding and protein folding in one protein
What and whom are family policies for? Unpacking the meaning of citizens’ support for family policy across Europe
The paper provides a comparative investigation into public attitudes to family policies. It shows that citizens’ support for family policies is diverse across different welfare regimes with respect to four countries belonging to distinct regimes: the UK, Germany, Norway and Slovenia. Using qualitative data, we unpack the ways individuals view the need for family policies, the rationale they use to explain their support for family policies and for imposing restrictions on access to family policies – i.e. why, for whom, and under which conditions. We find that social rights narratives are common in Norway; a social investment logic is prevalent in Germany and Slovenia; while in the UK the dominant view is closer to the work-central individualized responsibility narrative of neoliberalism. In addition, we find differences across regimes in who family policies should target. In the UK and Germany, the focus is much more on providing support to activate parents, while in Norway and partly Slovenia the focus is on providing well-being for children. The findings show that despite some convergence in family policies across Europe in recent times, we still find clear diversity in what and for whom family policies are for, its rationale largely embedded in the larger institutional normative structures of the welfare state. The results not only contribute to the literature on the relationship between public attitudes and welfare institutions, but also point towards shifting ideas about the role of family policies in the context of societal change
Far-infrared transmission studies of c-axis oriented superconducting MgB2 thin film
We reported far-infrared transmission measurements on a c-axis oriented
superconducting MgB thin film in the frequency range of 30 250
cm. We found that these measurements were sensitive to values of
scattering rate and superconducting gap . By fitting the
experimental transmission spectra at 40 K and below, we obtained
(700 1000) cm and 42 cm. These two

Towards the use of hydrogels in the treatment of limbal stem cell deficiency
Corneal blindness caused by limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) is a prevailing disorder worldwide. Clinical outcomes for LSCD therapy using amniotic membrane (AM) are unpredictable. Hydrogels can eliminate limitations of standard therapy for LSCD, because they present all the advantages of AM (i.e. biocompatibility, inertness and a biodegradable structure) but unlike AM, they are structurally uniform and can be easily manipulated to alter mechanical and physical properties. Hydrogels can be delivered with minimum trauma to the ocular surface and do not require extensive serological screening before clinical application. The hydrogel structure is also amenable to modifications which direct stem cell fate. In this focussed review we highlight hydrogels as biomaterial substrates which may replace and/or complement AM in the treatment of LSCD
Improved salt iodation methods for small-scale salt producers in low-resource settings in Tanzania
Background:
Universal salt iodation will prevent iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). Globally, salt-iodation technologies mostly target large and medium-scale salt-producers. Since most producers in low-income countries are small-scale, we examined and improved the performance of hand and knapsack-sprayers used locally in Tanzania.
Methods:
We studied three salt facilities on the Bagamoyo coast, investigating procedures for preparing potassium-iodate solution, salt spraying and mixing. Different concentrations of solution were prepared and tested using different iodation methods, with the aim of attaining correct and homogeneous iodine levels under real-life conditions. Levels achieved by manual mixing were compared to those achieved by machine mixing.
Results:
The overall median iodation level in samples of salt iodated using previously existing methods was 10.6 ppm (range 1.1 – 110.0 ppm), with much higher levels in the top than the bottom layers of the salt bags, p < 0.0001. Experimentation using knapsack-sprayers and manual mixing led to the reliable achievement of levels (60.9 ppm ± 7.4) that fell within the recommended range of 40 – 80 ppm. The improved methods yielded homogenous iodine concentrations in all layers of salt-bags (p = 0.58) with 96% of the samples (n = 45) falling within 40 – 80 ppm compared to only 9% (n = 45) before the experiment and training (p < 0.0001). For knapsack-spraying, a machine mixer improved the iodine levels and homogeneity slightly compared to manual mixing (p = 0.05).
Conclusion:
Supervised, standardized salt iodation procedures adapted to local circumstances can yield homogeneous iodine levels within the required range, overcoming a major obstacle to universal salt iodation
Training of attention functions in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
Pharmacological treatment of children with ADHD has been shown to be successful; however, medication may not normalize attention functions. The present study was based on a neuropsychological model of attention and assessed the effect of an attention training program on attentional functioning of children with ADHD. Thirty-two children with ADHD and 16 healthy children participated in the study. Children with ADHD were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions, i.e., an attention training program which trained aspects of vigilance, selective attention and divided attention, or a visual perception training which trained perceptual skills, such as perception of figure and ground, form constancy and position in space. The training programs were applied in individual sessions, twice a week, for a period of four consecutive weeks. Healthy children did not receive any training. Alertness, vigilance, selective attention, divided attention, and flexibility were examined prior to and following the interventions. Children with ADHD were assessed and trained while on ADHD medications. Data analysis revealed that the attention training used in the present study led to significant improvements of various aspects of attention, including vigilance, divided attention, and flexibility, while the visual perception training had no specific effects. The findings indicate that attention training programs have the potential to facilitate attentional functioning in children with ADHD treated with ADHD drugs
Iron fortification and iron supplementation are cost-effective interventions to reduce iron deficiency in four subregions of the world
Iron deficiency is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in
the world, affecting millions of people in both nonindustrialized and
industrialized countries. We estimated the costs, effects, and
cost-effectiveness of iron supplementation and iron fortification
interventions in 4 regions of the world. The effects on population health
were arrived at by using a population model designed to estimate the
lifelong impact of iron supplementation or iron fortification on
individuals benefiting from such interventions. The population model took
into consideration effectiveness, patient adherence, and geographic
coverage. Costs were based on primary data collection and on a review of
the literature. At 95% geographic coverage, iron supplementation has a
larger impact on population health than iron fortification. Iron
supplementation would avert <12,500 disability adjusted life years (DALY)
annually in the European subregion, with very low rates of adult and child
mortality, to almost 2.5 million DALYs in the African and Southeast Asian
subregions, with high rates of adult and child mortality. On the other
hand, fortification is less costly than supplementation and appears to be
more cost effective than iron supplementation, regardless of the
geographic coverage of fortification. We conclude that iron fortification
is economically more attractive than iron supplementation. However,
spending the extra resources to implement iron supplementation is still a
cost-effective option. The results should be interpreted with caution,
because evidence of intervention effectiveness predominantly relates to
small-scale efficacy trials, which may not reflect the actual effect under
expected conditions

Evolution and lineage dynamics of a transmissible cancer in Tasmanian devils.
Devil facial tumour 1 (DFT1) is a transmissible cancer clone endangering the Tasmanian devil. The expansion of DFT1 across Tasmania has been documented, but little is known of its evolutionary history. We analysed genomes of 648 DFT1 tumours collected throughout the disease range between 2003 and 2018. DFT1 diverged early into five clades, three spreading widely and two failing to persist. One clade has replaced others at several sites, and rates of DFT1 co-infection are high. DFT1 gradually accumulates copy number variants (CNVs) and its telomere lengths are short but constant. Recurrent CNVs reveal genes under positive selection, sites of genome instability and repeated loss of a small derived chromosome. Cultured DFT1 cell lines have increased CNV frequency and undergo highly reproducible convergent evolution.
