Arginine-Based Toothpaste Induces Calcium-Phosphates Deposits on Dentin Surface and Tubules
Objective: To test the ability of a calcium carbonate-containing toothpaste for dentinal hypersensitivity to occlude the exposed open tubules of dentin surface.
Method: Dentine slices (0.9±0.1 thick) and crown segments (1.5±0.3 cm thick) from human third molars were used.
Elmex Sensitive Professional toothpaste (GABA Int AG, Therwill, Switzerland) containing as main active ingredients arginine (8%), sodium
monofluorophosphate (1450 ppm Fˉ) and calcium carbonate, was applied (3 min) on coronal dentin surface.
Fluid flow/permeation through the dentin thickness (i.e. permeability or hydraulic conductance, Lp in microliters/min) was evaluated using a digital fluid flow-meter after smear layer formation, after EDTA treatment, after Elmex toothpaste treatment (t=0) and after soaking for 1, 7, 28 days in simulated body fluid (HBSS). Tubules occlusion, elemental analysis and mineral content were studied by ESEM-EDX.
Toothpaste penetration inside dentinal tubules was analyzed by laser confocal microscopy using calcein as tracer.
Result: Lp of EDTA-treated dentin significantly decreased after treatment with Elmex toothpaste (-73,32% at t=0) and after soaking in HBSS the Lp values further decreased (-77,69% at 24h, -78,18% at 7d, -83,01% at 28d).
After 24h and 7d in HBSS, ESEM on Elmex-treated dentin showed the presence of precipitates on dentin surface and in the dentinal tubules; EDX revealed N (from arginine) and F (from monofluorophosphate) of the toothpaste. Lp remained significantly lower (-78,18%) than EDTA- treated control dentin.
After 28d in HBSS, a calcium phosphate layer was detected on dentin surface so tubules were not visible. EDX detected F and no N. No CaP deposits were found on EDTA-treated dentin soaked in HBSS.
Confocal microscopy showed an average penetration depth of the toothpaste into the dentinal tubules of ~85 microns.
Conclusion: Elmex sensitive toothpaste can reduce the fluid movement into the exposed dentinal tubules and favour the formation of calcium phosphate minerals
Plasma glycosaminoglycan scores in early stage renal cell carcinoma
Introduction & Objectives
No diagnostic blood biomarker for RCC is currently used in the clinical routine. Using a systems biology approach, we
previously developed a score based on circulating glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) that detected metastatic clear cell
renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with 92.6%, 93.7%, and 100% accuracy vs. healthy subjects using either plasma, urine, or
combined measurements in a validation cohort (Gatto et al., 2016, Cell Reports). It is still unknown if this test is
accurate in early stage RCC or other RCC histologies. The primary endpoint of this study was the area-under-thecurve
(AUC) in the use of plasma GAG scores to detect pre-operative RCC, any stage and any histology, versus healthy
individuals
Chiral perturbation theory in a magnetic background - finite-temperature effects
We consider chiral perturbation theory for SU(2) at finite temperature in
a constant magnetic background . We compute the thermal mass of the pions
and the pion decay constant to leading order in chiral perturbation theory in
the presence of the magnetic field. The magnetic field gives rise to a
splitting between and as well as between
and . We also calculate the free energy and the
quark condensate to next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. Both
the pion decay constants and the quark condensate are decreasing slower as a
function of temperature as compared to the case with vanishing magnetic field.
The latter result suggests that the critical temperature for the chiral
transition is larger in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The increase
of as a function of is in agreement with most model calculations but
in disagreement with recent lattice calculations.Comment: 24 pages and 9 fig
Efficacy of weekly docetaxel in locally advanced cardiac angiosarcoma
Background: Primary cardiac angiosarcoma is extremely aggressive; however, it is often misdiagnosed because of its rarity. For locally advanced tumors, doxorubicin-based chemotherapy regimens are the standard of treatment, even if the gain in term of progression-free survival is limited and is no longer than 5 months. Case presentation: We report the case of a Caucasian 23-year-old man with locally advanced cardiac angiosarcoma who underwent radical surgical resection after a prolonged response to weekly docetaxel and complementary radiotherapy. Conclusion: Combined treatment with weekly docetaxel and radiotherapy may be a valid alternative for the treat-ment of locally advanced cardiac angiosarcoma; the combination can lead to radical surgical resections, avoiding the cumulative cardiotoxicity of antracycline-based regimens
Inverse magnetic catalysis in dense holographic matter
We study the chiral phase transition in a magnetic field at finite
temperature and chemical potential within the Sakai-Sugimoto model, a
holographic top-down approach to (large-N_c) QCD. We consider the limit of a
small separation of the flavor D8-branes, which corresponds to a dual field
theory comparable to a Nambu-Jona Lasinio (NJL) model. Mapping out the surface
of the chiral phase transition in the parameter space of magnetic field
strength, quark chemical potential, and temperature, we find that for small
temperatures the addition of a magnetic field decreases the critical chemical
potential for chiral symmetry restoration - in contrast to the case of
vanishing chemical potential where, in accordance with the familiar phenomenon
of magnetic catalysis, the magnetic field favors the chirally broken phase.
This "inverse magnetic catalysis" (IMC) appears to be associated with a
previously found magnetic phase transition within the chirally symmetric phase
that shows an intriguing similarity to a transition into the lowest Landau

Measurement of D-s(+) and D-s(*+) production in B meson decays and from continuum e(+)e(-) annihilation at √s=10.6 GeV

Copyright @ 2002 APSNew measurements of Ds+ and Ds*+ meson production rates from B decays and from qq̅ continuum events near the Υ(4S) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 fb-1 of data on the Υ(4S) resonance and 2.6 fb-1 off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions B(B⃗Ds+X)=(10.93±0.19±0.58±2.73)% and B(B⃗Ds*+X)=(7.9±0.8±0.7±2.0)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections σ(e+e-→Ds+X)×B(Ds+→φπ+)=7.55±0.20±0.34pb and σ(e+e-→Ds*±X)×B(Ds+→φπ+)=5.8±0.7±0.5pb are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the Υ(4S) mass. The branching fractions ΣB(B⃗Ds(*)+D(*))=(5.07±0.14±0.30±1.27)% and ΣB(B⃗Ds*+D(*))=(4.1±0.2±0.4±1.0)% are determined from the Ds(*)+ momentum spectra. Measurement of the branching fraction and CP content for the decay B(0) -> D(*+)D(*-)

Copyright @ 2002 APS.We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0→D*+D*- and of the CP-odd component of its final state using the BABAR detector. With data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.4  fb-1 collected at the Υ(4S) resonance during 1999–2000, we have reconstructed 38 candidate signal events in the mode B0→D*+D*- with an estimated background of 6.2±0.5 events. From these events, we determine the branching fraction to be B(B0→D*+D*-)=[8.3±1.6(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10-4. Search for rare quark-annihilation decays, B --> Ds(*) Phi
We report on searches for B- --> Ds- Phi and B- --> Ds*- Phi. In the context
of the Standard Model, these decays are expected to be highly suppressed since
they proceed through annihilation of the b and u-bar quarks in the B- meson.
Our results are based on 234 million Upsilon(4S) --> B Bbar decays collected
with the BABAR detector at SLAC. We find no evidence for these decays, and we
set Bayesian 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions BF(B-
--> Ds- Phi) Ds*- Phi)<1.2x10^(-5). These results

Association between operational indexes and the utilization rate of a general surgery center
This is a prospective study that focused on the dynamics of operating rooms using operational indexes that measure optimization, resistance, overload and utilization of the surgical unit, and also identified the factors most associated with these indexes. A total of 1,908 surgeries were analyzed over a period of two months in 2007. The average rates of utilization, optimization and resistance indexes were 80.41%, 65.35% and 34.65% respectively. The difference between the positive and negative overload index was low (5.42%). Operating room rescheduling and delays were the variables that contributed the most to the increase in these indexes. In the linear regression statistical model, the utilization rate was found to be the first common variable selected in the overload, resistance and optimization indexes. It is essential to work on these operational indexes with a view to obtain satisfactory results in the management of the surgical center, with well-defined work processes and teamwork.Se trata de un estudio prospectivo que analizó la dinámica de las salas quirúrgicas a través de Ãndices operacionales que miden la optimización, resistencia, sobrecarga y ocupación del centro quirúrgico, y también identificó los factores que más se asociaron a esos Ãndices. Fueron analizadas 1.908 cirugÃas, durante dos meses en el año de .2007. La tasa de ocupación y los Ãndices de optimización y resistencia promedios encontrados fueron 80,41, 65,35 y 34,65%, respectivamente. La diferencia entre el Ãndice de sobrecarga positivo y negativo fue bajo (5,42%). El cambio de sala y el atraso, respectivamente, fueron las variables que más contribuyeron para la elevación de esos Ãndices. En la prueba estadÃstica de regresión linear se observó que la tasa de ocupación fue la primera variable común seleccionada tanto en los Ãndices de sobrecarga, resistencia y optimización. Es fundamental la actuación sobre eses Ãndices operacionales para obtener resultados satisfactorios en la administración del centro quirúrgico, con procesos bien definidos y trabajo en equipo.Estudo prospectivo que analisou a dinâmica das salas cirúrgicas através de Ãndices operacionais que medem a otimização, resistência, sobrecarga e ocupação do centro cirúrgico, e também identificou os fatores que mais se associaram a esses Ãndices. Foram analisadas 1908 cirurgias, durante dois meses de 2007. A taxa de ocupação e os Ãndices de otimização e resistência médios encontrados foram 80,41, 65,35 e 34,65%, respectivamente. A diferença entre o Ãndice de sobrecarga positivo e negativo foi baixo (5,42%). O remanejamento de sala e o atraso, respectivamente, foram as variáveis que mais contribuÃram para a elevação desses Ãndices. No teste estatÃstico de regressão linear observou-se que a taxa de ocupação foi a primeira variável comum selecionada tanto nos Ãndices de sobrecarga, resistência como otimização. The Italian multiple sclerosis register
The past decade has seen extraordinary increase in worldwide availability of and access to several large multiple sclerosis (MS) databases and registries. MS registries represent powerful tools to provide meaningful information on the burden, natural history, and long-term safety and effectiveness of treatments. Moreover, patients, physicians, industry, and policy makers have an active interest in real-world observational studies based on register data, as they have the potential to answer the questions that are most relevant to daily treatment decision-making. In 2014, the Italian MS Foundation, in collaboration with the Italian MS clinical centers, promoted and funded the creation of the Italian MS Register, a project in continuity with the existing Italian MS Database Network set up from 2001. Main objective of the Italian MS Register is to create an organized multicenter structure to collect data of all MS patients for better defining the disease epidemiology, improving quality of care, and promoting research projects in high-priority areas. The aim of this article is to present the current framework and network of the Italian MS register, including the methodology used to improve the quality of data collection and to facilitate the exchange of data and the collaboration among national and international groups
