Dissecting Photometric redshift for Active Galactic Nuclei using XMM- and Chandra-COSMOS samples
With this paper, we release accurate photometric redshifts for 1692
counterparts to Chandra sources in the central square degree of the COSMOS
field. The availability of a large training set of spectroscopic redshifts that
extends to faint magnitudes enabled photometric redshifts comparable to the
highest quality results presently available for normal galaxies. We demonstrate
that morphologically extended, faint X-ray sources without optical variability
are more accurately described by a library of normal galaxies (corrected for
emission lines) than by AGN-dominated templates, even if these sources have
AGN-like X-ray luminosities. Preselecting the library on the bases of the
source properties allowed us to reach an accuracy sigma_(Delta z/(1+z_spec))
\sim0.015 with a fraction of outliers of 5.8% for the entire Chandra-COSMOS
sample. In addition, we release revised photometric redshifts for the 1735
optical counterparts of the XMM-detected sources over the entire 2 sq. deg.of
COSMOS. For 248 sources, our updated photometric redshift differs from the
previous release by Delta z>0.2. These changes are predominantly due to the
inclusion of newly available deep H-band photometry H_AB=24 mag. We illustrate
once again the importance of a spectroscopic training sample and how an
assumption about the nature of a source together with the number and the depth
of the available bands influence the accuracy of the photometric redshifts
determined for AGN. These considerations should be kept in mind when defining
the observational strategies of upcoming large surveys targeting AGN, such as
eROSITA at X-ray energies and ASKAP/EMU in the radio band.Comment: ApJ, accepted for publication. Data also available at

Ficolin-2 Levels and FCN2 Haplotypes Influence Hepatitis B Infection Outcome in Vietnamese Patients
Human Ficolin-2 (L-ficolins) encoded by FCN2 gene is a soluble serum protein that plays an important role in innate immunity and is mainly expressed in the liver. Ficolin-2 serum levels and FCN2 single nucleotide polymorphisms were associated to several infectious diseases. We initially screened the complete FCN2 gene in 48 healthy individuals of Vietnamese ethnicity. We genotyped a Vietnamese cohort comprising of 423 clinically classified hepatitis B virus patients and 303 controls for functional single nucleotide polymorphisms in the promoter region (-986G>A, -602G>A, -4A>G) and in exon 8 (+6424G>T) by real-time PCR and investigated the contribution of FCN2 genotypes and haplotypes to serum Ficolin-2 levels, viral load and liver enzyme levels. Haplotypes differed significantly between patients and controls (P = 0.002) and the haplotype AGGG was found frequently in controls in comparison to patients with hepatitis B virus and hepatocellular carcinoma (P = 0.0002 and P<0.0001) conferring a protective effect. Ficolin-2 levels differed significantly between patients and controls (p<0.0001). Patients with acute hepatitis B had higher serum Ficolin-2 levels compared to other patient groups and controls. The viral load was observed to be significantly distributed among the haplotypes (P = 0.04) and the AAAG haplotype contributed to higher Ficolin-2 levels and to viral load. Four novel single nucleotide polymorphisms in introns (-941G>T, -310G>A, +2363G>A, +4882G>A) and one synonymous mutation in exon 8 (+6485G>T) was observed. Strong linkage was found between the variant -986G>A and -4A>G. The very first study on Vietnamese cohort associates both Ficolin-2 serum levels and FCN2 haplotypes to hepatitis B virus infection and subsequent disease progression
A strategy for the rapid identification of fungal metabolites and the discovery of the antiviral activity of pyrenocine a and harzianopyridon
The isolation and identification of bioactive metabolites from complex extracts obtained from microbial growth media is a time consuming, costly, and labor-intensive task. A strategy to rapidly identify secondary metabolites isolated from extracts obtained from the culture media of marine-derived and endophytic fungal strains is described. Identification was achieved by HPLC-UV-MS and 1H NMR analyses in combination with data obtained from the Dictionary of Natural Products. Among the compounds identified, (-)-naphthoquinoneimine, citreorosein, emodin, pyrenocine A and harzianopyridone displayed moderate to potent antiviral activity. (-)-Naphthoquinoneimine was isolated as the enantiomer of its previously reported dextrorotatory congener, while 6,7-dihydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-4-chromanone is herein reported for the first time as a natural product396720731CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPBEX 4498-14-32010/50190-2; 2013/50228-8; 2011/08064-2; 2008/00331-9; 2013/23153-
