Aim of study: To evaluate the performance of beef calves fed black oat and Italian ryegrass pasture seeded with several different seeding rates (SR) of common vetch in a crop-livestock integrated system.Area of study: The experiment was carried out in Dois Vizinhos city, Paraná, Brazil.Material and methods: An area of 8.3 ha was used, which was divided into 11 paddocks, 0.75 ha each. Nellore calves (n = 22), 7 ± 2 months old and with initial body weight of 134 ± 27 kg were used for the tests. The experimental design was completely randomised. Vetch (Vicia sativa L., ‘Amethyst’) SR treatments included 0, 15, 30, and 45 kg ha-1, in a mixture with black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb. ‘IPR 61’ and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pastures.Main results: There was no effect of SR on pasture productivity parameters. The increase in vetch seed in the seed mixture resulted in an increase in crude protein and neutral detergent fibre, but decreased in vitro digestibility of vetch. However, these changes did not affect the nutritional value of the pasture. Vetch SR of 30 kg ha-1 or higher allowed greater share of the legume in the pasture, thereby enhancing greater individual animal performanceResearch highlights: Vetch SR of 30 kg ha-1 or higher allowed greater share of the legume in the pasture, thereby enhancing greater individual animal performance

In this work dual asymmetric centrifugation technique was applied to obtain new TiO2/carbon nitride heterojunctions (TiO2/g-C3N4) with high photocatalytic performance. Materials were obtained from TiO2 and g-C3N4, with an optimal mass ratio of 1.0:0.1 for achieving the highest photocatalytic activity in dyes degradation. The TiO2/g-C3N4 (1.0/0.1) photocatalyst was characterized via X-ray diffraction, confirming the crystalline phases and chemical composition of the material. UV–VIS spectroscopy data showed an increase in the visible light absorption, indicating an effective interaction between the heterojunction components. XPS data showed the formation of Ti3+ ions and oxygen vacancies, boosting the photocatalytic process. The TiO2/g-C3N4 (1.0/0.1) showed the highest photocatalytic performance degrading 99.9 % of rhodamine B and 99.6 % of methylene blue in 60 min under LED light irradiation. Radicals trapping experiments indicated O2–● radicals as the major photoactive species, through a Z-scheme type mechanism. The product of RhB photodegradation did not show toxicity to Artemia fransciscana larvae

Pulmonary embolism (PE) has highly variable clinical presentation, ranging from completely asymptomatic patients, in which the diagnosis is made incidentally, to situations where massive emboli lead the patient quickly to death. Its diagnosis is difficult and depends on analysis of pre-test probability for optimum accuracy of diagnostic procedures. The hallmark of treatment is anticoagulation, but the chemical thrombolysis should be considered in cases of hemodynamic instability.O tromboembolismo pulmonar (TEP) tem quadro clínico bastante variável, que vai desde quadros completamente assintomáticos, nos quais o diagnóstico é feito incidentalmente, até situações em que êmbolos maciços levam o paciente rapidamente à morte.

PURPOSE: To evaluate alanine aminotransferase levels before and after a hemodialysis session and to correlate these values with the hematocrit rate and weight loss during hemodialysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The serum alanine aminotransferase levels, hematocrit rate and body weight were measured and correlated before and after a single hemodialysis session for 146 patients with chronic renal failure. An receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for the serum alanine aminotransferase levels collected before and after hemodialysis was plotted to identify hepatitis C virus-infected patients. RESULTS: The mean weight loss of the 146 patients during hemodialysis was 5.3% (p < 0.001). The mean alanine aminotransferase levels before and after hemodialysis were 18.8 and 23.9 IU/, respectively, denoting a significant 28.1% increase. An equally significant increase of 16.4% in the hematocrit rate also occurred after hemodialysis. The weight loss was inversely correlated with the rise in both the alanine aminotransferase level (r = 0.3; p < 0.001) and hematocrit rate (r = 0.5; p < 0.001). A direct correlation was found between the rise in alanine aminotransferase levels and the hematocrit during the hemodialysis session (r = 0.4; p < 0.001). Based on the ROC curve, the upper limit of the normal alanine aminotransferase level should be reduced by 40% relative to the upper limit of normal if the blood samples are collected before the hemodialysis session or by 60% if blood samples are collected after the session. CONCLUSION: In the present study, significant elevations in the serum alanine aminotransferase levels and hematocrit rates occurred in parallel to a reduction in body weight after the hemodialysis session. These findings suggest that one of the factors for low alanine aminotransferase levels prior to hemodialysis could be hemodilution in patients with chronic renal failure

Abstract The present study reports a collection of Amblyomma spp. ticks in birds from several areas of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 568 tick specimens (404 larvae, 164 nymphs) were collected from 261 bird specimens. From these ticks, 204 (36%) specimens (94 larvae, 110 nymphs) were reared to the adult stage, being identiWed as Amblyomma longirostre (94 larvae, 90 nymphs), Amblyomma calcaratum (13 nymphs), Amblyomma nodosum (2 nymphs), and Amblyomma cajennense (5 nymphs). Additionally, 39 larvae reared to the nymphal stage and 8 nymphs that died before reaching the adult stage were identiWed as A. longirostre according to peculiar characters inherent to the nymphal stage of this species: scutum elongate, and hypostome pointed. The remaining 271 larvae and 46 nymphs were identiWed as Amblyomma sp. Ticks were collected from 51 species of birds distributed in 22 bird families and 6 orders. The order Passeriformes constituted the vast majority of the records, comprising 253 (97%) out of the 261 infested birds. Subadults of A. longirostre were identiWed from 35 species of Passeriformes, comprising 11 families (Cardinalidae, Dendrocolaptidae, Fringillidae, Furnariidae, Parulidae, Pipridae, Thamnophilidae, Thraupidae, Turdidae, Tyrannidae, and Vireonidae), and from 1 specie

OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and the adherence to measures of social distancing in children and adolescents studied in three national surveys conducted in Brazil between May–June 2020. METHODS Three national serological surveys were conducted in 133 sentinel cities located in all 27 Federative Units. Multistage probability sampling was used to select 250 individuals per city. The total sample size in age ranges 0–9 and 10–19 years old are of 4,263 and 8,024 individuals, respectively. Information on children or adolescents was gathered with a data collection app, and a rapid point-of-case test for SARS-CoV-2 was conducted on a finger prick blood sample. RESULTS The adjusted prevalence of antibodies was 2.9% (2.2–3.6) among children 0–9 years, 2.2% (1.8–2.6) among adolescents 10-19 years, and 3.0% (2.7–3.3) among adults 20+years. Prevalence of antibodies was higher among poor children and adolescents compared to those of rich families. Adherence to social distancing measures was seen in 72.4% (71.9–73.8) of families with children, 60.8% (59.6–61.9) for adolescents, and 57.4% (56.9–57.8) for adults. For not leaving the house except for essential matters the proportions were 81.7% (80.5–82.9), 70.6% (69.6–61.9), and 65.1% (64.7–65.5), respectively. Among children and adolescents, social distancing was strongly associated with socioeconomic status, being much higher in the better-off families. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 showed comparable levels among children, adolescents, and adults. Adherence to social distancing measures was more prevalent in children, followed by adolescents. There were important socioeconomic differences in the adherence to social distancing among children and adolescents

Toxoplasma gondii is an apicomplex protozoan that infects warm-blooded animals and can be considered a major parasite capable of infecting humans. Domestic chickens can be easily infected by protozoa, since they can ingest oocysts found in the soil and are considered good indicators of environmental contamination by T. gondii. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in free range chickens and to evaluate the risks factors associated with the protozoan in rural area of Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. From March 2013 to February 2014, 597 blood samples from domestic chickens were collected from 74 farms, from nine layers representing each district in the rural area. To evaluate the risk factors, in these farms an epidemiological questionnaire was applied to the residents. Serum samples were tested by indirect immunofluorescence and 49.2% (294/597) were positive for anti-T. gondii antibodies, with titres varying from 16 to 4096. Of the 74 analyzed farms, 63 (85.1%) reported that cats had access to food deposits, with a significant association when positive chickens were present (p = 0.04) and the OR of 4.07. The variable "slaughter of animals" (poultry and cattle) in 51 (68.9%) of the farms was reported the slaughter of cattle and birds in the farm, with significant p value (p = 0.05). Most farms 59 (79.7%) reported the presence of domestic cats, which could be associated with the high seroprevalence found in chickens and the rate of environmental contamination. The high prevalence of antibodies found in this study, in addition to the high frequency of farms with positive cases, suggests a great environmental contamination in the studied districts, thus being a potential risk to human and animal health.
