    Humor is an organizational tool which, when used appropriately, can be effective in facilitating a better work environment.  Organizational benefits include increased group cohesion, reduced conflict (through reduced stress), increased leadership effectiveness, and improved communication. There are implications that humor in diverse groups, which relate to gender or ethnicity, must be used with caution

    Many business schools in the United States and abroad market themselves as having quality programs, in part based on the level of external validation they have received through the attainment of accreditation.  The most recent AACSB-IME standards seem to indicate that schools will be evaluated based on the alignment of the policies, curricula, educational programs and practices with the business school’s mission.  This requires that the institutions have a clear understanding of who they are, want to be become, who/what they wish to produce and who they serve.  This study examines a single AACSB-IME accredited institution’s efforts to revise its mission statement in an environment undergoing a major cultural shift from a baccalaureate to Master’s I institution, as well as changes in key leadership

    On your own: Older adults’ food choice and dietary habits

    The UK, in common with many countries, has an ageing demographic. Changes accompanying ageing can influence food choice and dietary habits. This study explored older adults’ perceptions and practices related to dietary behaviour and the factors influencing their food choice in later life. Semi-structured focus group discussions were conducted with 30 individuals (aged 63–90 years) in a UK city. An inductive thematic approach was adopted for data analysis, and 4 themes and 12 sub-themes emerged: age-related changes (lower appetite, food changes, declining physical function); food access (food cost, support with food, maintaining independence); on your own (cooking for one, eating alone, shopping for one); and relationship with food (food variety, eating what you want, dieting). These influenced participants’ food acquisition, food preparation and cooking, as well as eating habits. Living alone and its substantial influence, as well as associated social isolation and loneliness were highlighted in many of the discussions. Given the possible implications on nutritional intake, further work is recommended in this area. Likewise, steps to improve food access, increase opportunities for commensal eating and fundamentally, address social isolation and loneliness in the older population should be taken

    Gap solitons in a model of a hollow optical fiber

    We introduce a models for two coupled waves propagating in a hollow-core fiber: a linear dispersionless core mode, and a dispersive nonlinear quasi-surface one. The linear coupling between them may open a bandgap, through the mechanism of the avoidance of crossing between dispersion curves. The third-order dispersion of the quasi-surface mode is necessary for the existence of the gap. Numerical investigation reveals that the entire bandgap is filled with solitons, and they all are stable in direct simulations. The gap-soliton (GS) family is extended to include pulses moving relative to the given reference frame, up to limit values of the corresponding boost δ\delta , beyond which the solitons do not exists. The limit values are nonsymmetric for δ>0\delta >0 and δ<0\delta <0. The extended gap is also entirely filled with the GSs, all of which are stable in simulations. Recently observed solitons in hollow-core photonic-crystal fibers may belong to this GS family.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Memory Efficient On-Line Streaming for Multichannel Spike Train Analysis

    Rapid advances in multichannel neural signal recording technologies in recent years have spawned broad applications in neuro-prostheses and neuro-rehabilitation. The dramatic increase in data bandwidth and volume associated with multichannel recording requires a significant computational effort which presents major design challenges for brain-machine interface (BMI) system in terms of power dissipation and hardware area. In this paper, we present a streaming method for implementing real-time memory efficient neural signal processing hardware. This method exploits the pseudo-stationary property of neural signals and, thus, eliminates the need of temporal storage in batch-based processing. The proposed technique can significantly reduce memory size and dynamic power while effectively maintaining the accuracy of algorithms. The streaming kernel is robust when compared to the batch processing over a range of BMI benchmark algorithms. The advantages of the streaming kernel when implemented on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices are also demonstrated

    Unitary Ca2+ current through recombinant type 3 InsP3 receptor channels under physiological ionic conditions

    The ubiquitous inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) receptor (InsP3R) channel, localized primarily in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane, releases Ca2+ into the cytoplasm upon binding InsP3, generating and modulating intracellular Ca2+ signals that regulate numerous physiological processes. Together with the number of channels activated and the open probability of the active channels, the size of the unitary Ca2+ current (iCa) passing through an open InsP3R channel determines the amount of Ca2+ released from the ER store, and thus the amplitude and the spatial and temporal nature of Ca2+ signals generated in response to extracellular stimuli. Despite its significance, iCa for InsP3R channels in physiological ionic conditions has not been directly measured. Here, we report the first measurement of iCa through an InsP3R channel in its native membrane environment under physiological ionic conditions. Nuclear patch clamp electrophysiology with rapid perfusion solution exchanges was used to study the conductance properties of recombinant homotetrameric rat type 3 InsP3R channels. Within physiological ranges of free Ca2+ concentrations in the ER lumen ([Ca2+]ER), free cytoplasmic [Ca2+] ([Ca2+]i), and symmetric free [Mg2+] ([Mg2+]f), the iCa–[Ca2+]ER relation was linear, with no detectable dependence on [Mg2+]f. iCa was 0.15 ± 0.01 pA for a filled ER store with 500 µM [Ca2+]ER. The iCa–[Ca2+]ER relation suggests that Ca2+ released by an InsP3R channel raises [Ca2+]i near the open channel to ∼13–70 µM, depending on [Ca2+]ER. These measurements have implications for the activities of nearby InsP3-liganded InsP3R channels, and they confirm that Ca2+ released by an open InsP3R channel is sufficient to activate neighboring channels at appropriate distances away, promoting Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release

    Early responses to H7N9 in southern mainland China

The previous SARS outbreak in this country was accompanied by contradictory information, while worries about wide-spread influenza led to discrimination worldwide. Early understanding of public threat perceptions is therefore important for effective public health communication and intervention. Methods: We interviewed 1011 respondents by phone two weeks after the first case. Questions examined risk awareness and media use, beliefs about the emergence of the threat and those most at risk, anxiety about infection and preventive and avoidant behaviours. Results: Results demonstrate moderate levels of anxiety but relatively high levels of trust towards government officials. Threat emergence was associated with hygiene levels, temperature change, floating pigs in the Huangpu River and migration to the city. Anxiety predicted both recommended and non-recommended behavioural changes. Conclusions: Comparatively high levels of trust in Chinese government advice about H7N9 contrast positively with previous pandemic communications in China. Anxiety helped drive both recommended and non-recommended behaviours, with potentially important economic and social implications. This included evidence of 'othering’ of those associated with the threat (e.g. migrants).     Hard and soft spectral states of ULXs

    I discuss some differences between the observed spectral states of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) and the canonical scheme of spectral states defined in Galactic black holes. The standard interpretation of ULXs with a curved spectrum, or a moderately steep power-law with soft excess and high-energy downturn, is that they are an extension of the very high state, up to luminosities ~ 1 to 3 L_{Edd}. Two competing models are Comptonization in a warm corona, and slim disk; I suggest bulk motion Comptonization in the radiatively-driven outflow as another possibility. The interpretation of ULXs with a hard power-law spectrum is more problematic. Some of them remain in that state over a large range of luminosities; others switch directly to a curved state without going through a canonical high/soft state. I suggest that those ULXs are in a high/hard state not seen in Galactic black holes; that state may overlap with the low/hard state at lower accretion rates, and extend all the way to Eddington accretion rates.
