    A parametric study on a RC frame based on “PUSHOVER” analysis

    Three commercial software packages (SAP 2000, SeismoStruck and MIDAS/CIVIL) universally used in the design of civil engineering structures, are applied on a parametric study of pushover analyses of a RC frame of an office building under a few evaluative phases. In order to represent the influence of the masonry infill panels the equivalent tie method is used; for a sensitivity study on the capacity curves, several values for the tie width are considered. The comprehensive parametric study also addresses the influence of other parameters, on the structural behavior and non linear capacity curves of the RC frame, namely: length and location of the plastic hinges forming near the end of the structural elements, and different loading patterns (with uniform, modal and triangular distributions)

    In nowadays the increasing productivity in the shortest possible time and with high quality is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges for the industry. Recently, the industry has turned to CNC machines very often, since they work automatically and are able to achieve high precision with a high performance. In this sense, the vibration has been presented during the last decades as one of the main limiting factors for the improvement of productivity specially in machining operations. This work contributes to the reduction of vibrations, proposing the use of optimization methods to minimize vibrations using milling parameters (cutting speed,feed speed, axial penetration and radial penetration) related to the section area. This study presents a theoretical analysis on the materials and tools used throughout the experimental trials, as well as the methods and programs used.     Factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A among Chilean patients with venous and arterial thrombosis

Casilla 747,Talca, Chile.Factor V Leiden and G20210A mutation of prothrombin gene are two important genetic polymorphisms associated with an increased risk for thrombosis. Aim: To establish the prevalence of factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A mutation in the Chilean population and their association to venous and arterial thromboembolism. Material and methods: A case-control study was conducted where 149 patients with thrombosis (87 with arterial and 62 with venous thrombosis) confirmed by CAT-scan, electrocardiogram and cardiac enzymes or Doppler depending on the case, and 160 healthy blood donors were genetically analyzed for the presence of both polymorphisms. Results: Factor V Leiden mutation was found in 5.4% of patients and in 1.3% of healthy controls (p=0.04). Heterozygosity for G20210A prothrombin mutation was found in 5.4% of patients and in 2.5% of the control group (p=NS). When arterial and venous thrombosis were considered as separate entities, 4.6% of patients with arterial thrombosis and 6.5% with venous thrombosis presented factor V Leiden (p=NS). Likewise, 8.1% of patients with venous thrombosis and 3.5% of patients with arterial thrombosis had G20210A prothrombin mutation (p=NS). Conclusions: In non selected consecutive Chilean patients with arterial and venous thrombosis the frequency of factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A is less than we could expect from their prevalence in the general populatio

    Are the liabilities of newness and smallness the same for male and female informal entrepreneurs? Evidence from Brazil

    Though challenges to female entrepreneurship are widely acknowledged in the settings of developed countries or the context of formal firms, the challenges faced by female informal entrepreneurs in developing markets are less explored. Based on the liabilities of newness and smallness framework in organizational ecology, we draw on a sample of 2562 Brazilian informal firms, to examine the unique differences in the experience of newness and smallness between male and female informal entrepreneurs. With increasing firm age, female informal entrepreneurs realized lower firm revenues (inverted-U), however, the firm age and firm revenue association are linear for males. Informal firm performance did not vary by size between male and female informal entrepreneurs. The distinctive differences in firm revenues for male and female entrepreneurs have implications for informal entrepreneurship

    Monitoring Of Bcr-abl Levels In Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Patients Treated With Imatinib In The Chronic Phase - The Importance Of A Major Molecular Response

    Background: Real time PCR has become the most common technique to monitor BCR-ABL transcript levels of patients treated with kinase inhibitors. The aim of this study was to evaluate BCR-ABL levels of chronic myeloid leukemia patients treated with imatinib in the chronic phase and correlate the response to therapy and event-free survival. Methods: BCR-ABL levels were measured in peripheral blood cell samples using Real time PCR at diagnosis and then every 3 months after starting therapy with imatinib. Major molecular response was defined as a three-log reduction from the standardized baseline value. Major molecular response values were adjusted to international scale using a conversion factor of 1.19. The results are reported as a BCR-ABL/ABL ratio (%). Results: Hematological, major cytogenetic and complete cytogenetic responses were achieved by 57 (95%), 45 (75%) and 38 (63%) patients, respectively. Twenty-four out of sixty patients achieved a major molecular response (40%) in a median time of 8.5 months. Overall survival and event free survival were higher for patients with (100%) versus patients without (77%) a complete cytogenetic response (p-value = 0.01) at 48 months. Patients with complete cytogenetic response and major molecular response had a higher event free survival compared to patients with complete cytogenetic response but without major molecular response (p-value = 0.007).     EXAME ANATOMOPATOLÓGICO, MICROBIOLÓGICO, CITOLÓGICO E FÍSICO-QUÍMICO DAS ARTICULAÇÕES DE SUÍNOS ARTRÍTICOS NO MATADOURO

    Estudou-se por meio de exames anatomopatológico, microbiológico, citológico e físico-químico, as articulações de 130 suínos abatidos em um matadouro localizado em Concórdia SC. Os animais foram escolhidos de forma direcionada e as articulações foram classificadas macroscopicamente de acordo com as lesões presentes na membrana sinovial, cartilagem articular e no linfonodo regional. Dos 130 suínos escolhidos, 25 apresentavam-se com as articulações normais, 36 com artrite causada pela osteocondrose, 50 com artrite infecciosa e 19 com artrite traumática. Em todos os casos de artrite infecciosa havia reação do linfonodo regional e, da mesma forma, sempre que os linfonodos regionais estavam reativos, havia artrite infecciosa no membro relacionado. Dos 50 casos de artrite infecciosa, 40 (80%) eram assépticos, de sete (14%) foi isolado o Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae e de três (6%), o Mycoplasma hyosynoviae, pela primeira vez isolado no Brasil. Nas demais categorias de artrite, não foram isolados nenhum agente infeccioso e nem visualizadas alterações nos linfonodos regionais. Conclui-se que as artrites infecciosas são acompanhadas de reação dos linfonodos regionais e as artrites causadas pela osteocondrose são estéreis. Pathological, microbiological, cytological and physical-chemical studies of joints from arthritic swines in the abattoir Abstract The joints of one hundred and thirty pigs from an abattoir in Concórdia - SC, were studied, by means of pathological, microbiological, cytological and physical-chemical procedures. The choice of the pigs was not made by random distribution and the joints were grouped grossly according of lesions of the synovial membrane, cartilage and of the draining lymph node. From 130 pigs, 36 showed lesions of osteochondrosis, 50 infectious arthritis, 19 traumatic arthritis and 25 normal joints. In all cases of infectious arthritis there was a reaction of the corresponding draining lymph node. Whenever the draining lymph node was reactive, there was infectious arthritis in the related limb. Of the 50 infectious arthritis, 40 (80%) were aseptic, 7 (14%) yielded Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and 3 (6%) yielded Mycoplasma hyosynoviae, for the first time isolated in Brazil. In the remaining arthritis categories, no infectious agents nor alterations in the draining lymph node was diagnosed

    Pd and Pd-Cu supported on different carbon materials and immobilized as flow-through catalytic membranes for the chemical reduction of NO3, NO2-and BrO3- in drinking water treatment

    Powdered catalysts are commonly used in lab-scale tests for the catalytic reduction of oxoanions in drinking water, but their powder nature limits their application at full scale. In this work, Pd and Pd-Cu catalysts (5% wt.) supported on carbon materials with different structural properties, in powder form, were used to prepare catalytic membranes that were tested in a reactor with flow-through configuration (FTCMR) to study their performance in the reduction of NO3-, NO2- and BrO3-. Pd catalytic membranes showed high activity in the reduction of NO2-, being the selectivity to NH4+ lower than 2% at 80% NO2- conversion in all cases. In BrO3- reduction, they exhibited a wide range of conversions being the catalyst supported on materials with high conductivity the most active ones, which may be ascribed to the charge distribution at the metal-carbon interface. NO3- reduction using Pd-Cu catalytic membranes showed that catalysts supported on materials with small nanoparticle size and low electrical conductivity exhibited higher selectivity to NH4+. FTCMR led to a good control of H2 transfer and availability in the active sites, facilitating the tuning of H2 availability conditions to preserve the activity, while maintaining/diminishing selectivity to NH4+. In simultaneous oxoanions reduction tests, NO3- reduction was inhibited by Br species, probably by affection of the Pd-Cu redox cycle.     Breast cancer in very young women—a multicenter 10-year experience

    Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent cancer in adult young women in Europe. Although rare, it is one of the leading causes of death in this age group. The aim of this study is to characterize a cohort of young women regarding tumor stage, biology, treatment and survival. Patients and methods: We present a multicenter retrospective analysis of women <35 years of age, diagnosed with BC between 2008 and 2017. A total of 207 patients from five Portuguese centers were included, from whom 172 were eligible for analysis. Data were analyzed using IBM SPPSS statistics. Results: Median age at diagnosis was 31 years. Fifty-one percent of tumors were hormone receptor (HR)-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, 20% HR-positive/HER2-positive, 8% HR-negative/HER2-positive and 20% triple-negative BC. Twenty-two percent of patients were diagnosed in stage I, 26% stage II, 45% stage III and 6% had de novo metastatic cancer. Thirty-nine percent of patients were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Mean follow-up time was 64.9 months and overall survival at 5 years, of the entire cohort and metastatic patients, was 86.5% and 26%, respectively. Conclusions: In our study we found similar population characteristics to other cohorts <35 years of age. To our knowledge, this is one of the largest cohorts in very young women. BC in young women is an important issue and further studies are needed to provide better care and survivorship to patients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
