Azeite, Manteiga ou Margarina? As Gorduras Alimentares em Rosa Maria no Portugal de meados do século XX

    Get PDF
EnThis text aims to understand the relevance of the different fats in Portuguese recipes of the 20th century, specifically, in eight books written by Rosa Maria, published in 1956, by Civilização Publisher. On the other hand, through the study of publicity in five women's magazines, also published in the same year, the article also analyzes the importance of olive oil and other fats of animal origin. Which fats and brands were announced? What are the characteristics of those advertisements? What strategies have been adopted by advertisers? Some of the issues to which we seek to address, in an investigation that analyzes the olive oil, one of the relevant products of the so-called Mediterranean diet, compared to other animal fats, in the Portuguese diet in the middle of 20th century. Keywords: Portugal, 20th century, Olive oil and animal fats, Rosa Maria, Publicity.

    Scattering from supramacromolecular structures

We study theoretically the scattering imprint of a number of branched supramacromolecular architectures, namely, polydisperse stars and dendrimeric, hyperbranched structures. We show that polydispersity and nature of branching highly influence the intermediate wavevector region of the scattering structure factor, thus providing insight into the morphology of different aggregates formed in polymer solutions.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures To appear in PR

Association Of Bartonella Species With Wild And Synanthropic Rodents In Different Brazilian Biomes

Bartonella spp. comprise an ecologically successful group of microorganisms that infect erythrocytes and have adapted to different hosts, which include a wide range of mammals, besides humans. Rodents are reservoirs of about two-thirds of Bartonella spp. described to date; and some of them have been implicated as causative agents of human diseases. In our study, we performed molecular and phylogenetic analyses of Bartonella spp. infecting wild rodents from five different Brazilian biomes. In order to characterize the genetic diversity of Bartonella spp., we performed a robust analysis based on three target genes, followed by sequencing, Bayesian inference, and maximum likelihood analysis. Bartonella spp. were detected in 25.6% (117/457) of rodent spleen samples analyzed, and this occurrence varied among different biomes. The diversity analysis of gltA sequences showed the presence of 15 different haplotypes. Analysis of the phylogenetic relationship of gltA sequences performed by Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood showed that the Bartonella species detected in rodents from Brazil was closely related to the phylogenetic group A detected in other cricetid rodents from North America, probably constituting only one species. Last, the Bartonella species genogroup identified in the present study formed a monophyletic group that included Bartonella samples from seven different rodent species distributed in three distinct biomes. In conclusion, our study showed that the occurrence of Bartonella bacteria in rodents is much more frequent and widespread than previously recognized. © 2016, American Society for Microbiology. Uma variante do gene WNK4 está associada à osteoporose mas não à hipertensão na população portuguesa

Germline mutations in the WNK4 gene originate Gordon syndrome or pseudohypoaldosteronism type II, a familial form of hypertension with hyperkalemia and hypercalciuria. The WNK4 protein encodes a protein kinase involved in the regulation of various renal ion channels. In order to elucidate the contribution of WNK4 genetic variants to hypertension and/or osteoporosis, we analyzed 271 control individuals and a cohort of 448 hypertensive and 372 osteoporosis patients from the Portuguese population. Ten genetic variants were detected in 4.3% of the population under study, none of which revealed any significant association to the hypertension phenotype. In contrast, a rare missense alteration in a highly conserved arginine residue in exon 17 showed an association to the osteoporosis group. Our data suggest that WNK4 polymorphism rs56116165 is a rare allelic variant of a candidate gene with a biological function in renal calcium homeostasis and thus may contribute to a genetic predisposition to osteoporosis.FC

Mesenchymal stem cells from patients with chronic myeloid leukemia do not express BCR-ABL and have absence of chimerism after allogeneic bone marrow transplant

Bone marrow is a heterogeneous cell population which includes hematopoietic and mesenchymal progenitor cells. Dysregulated hematopoiesis occurs in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), being caused at least in part by abnormalities in the hematopoietic progenitors. However, the role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in CML has not been well characterized. The objectives of the present study were to observe the biological characteristics of MSCs from CML patients and to determine if MSCs originate in part from donors in CML patients after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). We analyzed MSCs from 5 untreated patients and from 3 CML patients after sex-mismatched allogeneic BMT. Flow cytometry analysis revealed the typical MSC phenotype and in vitro assays showed ability to differentiate into adipocytes and osteoblasts. Moreover, although some RT-PCR data were contradictory, combined fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis showed that MSCs from CML patients do not express the bcr-abl gene. Regarding MSCs of donor origin, although it is possible to detect Y target sequence by nested PCR, the low frequency (0.14 and 0.34%) of XY cells in 2 MSC CML patients by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis suggests the presence of contaminant hematopoietic cells and the absence of host-derived MSCs in CML patients. Therefore, we conclude that MSCs from CML patients express the typical MSC phenotype, can differentiate into osteogenic and adipogenic lineages and do not express the bcr-abl gene. MSCs cannot be found in recipients 12 to 20 months after BMT. The influence of MSCs on the dysregulation of hematopoiesis in CML patients deserves further investigation

A proposal of PSO particles' initialization, for costly unconstrained optimization problems: ORTHOinit

    Get PDF
Abstract. A proposal for particles’ initialization in PSO is presented and discussed, with focus on costly global unconstrained optimization problems. The standard PSO iteration is reformulated such that the trajectories of the particles are studied in an extended space, combining particles’ position and speed. To the aim of exploring effectively and efficiently the optimization search space since the early iterations, the particles are initialized using sets of orthogonal vectors in the extended space (orthogonal initialization, ORTHOinit). Theoretical derivation and application to a simulation-based optimization problem in ship design are presented, showing the potential benefits of the current approach
