    Realistic constraints on the doubly charged bilepton couplings from Bhabha scattering with LEP data

    Upper limits on doubly charged bilepton couplings and masses are extracted from LEP data for Bhabha scattering at energy range s=183202\sqrt{s}=183-202 GeV using standard model program ZFITTER which calculates radiative corrections. We find that gL2/ML2<O(105)GeV2g_{L}^{2}/M_{L}^{2}<O(10^{-5})GeV^{-2} at 95% C.L. for scalar and vector bileptons.Comment: 5 pages, 1 EPS figur

    Lepton flavor violating signals of a little Higgs model at the high energy linear e+ee^{+}e^{-} colliders

    Littlest Higgs (LH)(LH) model predicts the existence of the doubly charged scalars Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm}, which generally have large flavor changing couplings to leptons. We calculate the contributions of Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm} to the lepton flavor violating (LFV)(LFV) processes liljγl_{i}\to l_{j}\gamma and liljlklkl_{i}\to l_{j}l_{k}l_{k}, and compare our numerical results with the current experimental upper limits on these processes. We find that some of these processes can give severe constraints on the coupling constant YijY_{ij} and the mass parameter MΦM_{\Phi}. Taking into account the constraints on these free parameters, we further discuss the possible lepton flavor violating signals of Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm} at the high energy linear e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider (ILC)(ILC) experiments. Our numerical results show that the possible signals of Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm} might be detected via the subprocesses e±e±l±l±e^{\pm}e^{\pm}\to l^{\pm}l^{\pm} in the future ILCILC experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures.     Acute Bacterial Meningitis in Adults – A Review of 493 Episodes

    To characterize acute bacterial meningitis in adults, we reviewed the charts of all persons 16 years of age or older in whom acute bacterial meningitis was diagnosed at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1962 through 1988. We included patients who were admitted after initial treatment at other hospitals. During the 27-year period, 445 adults were treated for 493 episodes of acute bacterial meningitis, of which 197 (40 percent) were nosocomial. Gram-negative bacilli (other than Haemophilus influenzae) caused 33 percent of the nosocomial episodes but only 3 percent of the community-acquired episodes. In the 296 episodes of community-acquired meningitis, the most common pathogens were Streptococcus pneumoniae (37 percent), Neisseria meningitidis (13 percent), and Listeria monocytogenes (10 percent); these organisms accounted for only 8 percent of the nosocomial episodes. Only 19 of the 493 episodes of meningitis (4 percent) were due to H. influenzae. Nine percent of all patients had recurrent meningitis; many had a cerebrospinal fluid leak. Seizures occurred in 23 percent of patients with community-acquired meningitis, and 28 percent had focal central nervous system findings. Risk factors for death among those with single episodes of community-acquired meningitis included older age ( ≥ 60 years), obtunded mental state on admission, and seizures within the first 24 hours. Among those with single episodes, the in-hospital mortality rate was 25 percent for community-acquired and 35 percent for nosocomial meningitis. The overall case fatality rate was 25 percent and did not vary significantly over the 27 years. In our large urban hospital, a major proportion of cases of acute bacterial meningitis in adults were nosocomial. Recurrent episodes of meningitis were frequent. The overall mortality rate remained high., Few studies of bacterial meningitis have focused on the clinical and pathologic features of the illness in adults1–5. Most large series have included both children and adults, with children accounting for 45 to 87 percent of cases6–16. Results have rarely been reported according to age group in these studies.     Charged Higgs boson contribution to νˉee\bar{\nu}_e-e scattering from low to ultrahigh energy in Higgs triplet model

    We study the νˉee\bar{\nu}_e-e scattering from low to ultrahigh energy in the framework of Higgs Triplet Model (HTM). We add the contribution of charged Higgs boson exchange to the total cross section of the scattering. We obtain the upper bound hee/MH±2.8×103GeV1h_{ee}/M_{H^\pm}\lesssim2.8\times10^{-3}GeV^{-1} in this process from low energy experiment. We show that by using the upper bound obtained, the charged Higgs contribution can give enhancements to the total cross section with respect to the SM prediction up to 5.16% at E1014E\leq10^{14} eV and maximum at sMH±2s\approx M_{H^\pm}^2 and would help to determine the feasibility experiments to discriminate between SM and HTM at current available facilities.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Higgs sector and R-parity breaking couplings in models with broken U(1)_B-L gauge symmetry

    Four different supersymmetric models based on SU(2)_L X U(1)_R X U(1)_B-L and SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_B-L gauge symmetry groups are studied. U(1)_B-L symmetry is broken spontaneously by a vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a sneutrino field. The right-handed gauge bosons may obtain their mass solely by sneutrino VEV. The physical charged lepton and neutrino are mixtures of gauginos, higgsinos and lepton interaction eigenstates. Explicit formulae for masses and mixings in the physical lepton fields are found. The spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism fixes the trilinear R-parity breaking couplings. Only some special R-parity breaking trilinear couplings are allowed. There is a potentially large trilinear lepton number breaking coupling - which is unique to left-right models - that is proportional to the SU(2)_R gauge coupling g_R. The couplings are parametrized by few mixing angles, making the spontaneous R-parity breaking a natural ``unification framework'' for R-parity breaking couplings in SUSYLR models.Comment: 19 pages, no figures, uses REVTeX.     Reconstructing Neutrino Properties from Collider Experiments in a Higgs Triplet Neutrino Mass Model

    We extend the minimal supersymmetric standard model with bilinear R-parity violation to include a pair of Higgs triplet superfields. The neutral components of the Higgs triplets develop small vacuum expectation values (VEVs) quadratic in the bilinear R-parity breaking parameters. In this scheme the atmospheric neutrino mass scale arises from bilinear R-parity breaking while for reasonable values of parameters the solar neutrino mass scale is generated from the small Higgs triplet VEVs. We calculate neutrino masses and mixing angles in this model and show how the model can be tested at future colliders.     Prospects for e+e- physics at Frascati between the phi and the psi

    We present a detailed study, done in the framework of the INFN 2006 Roadmap, of the prospects for e+e- physics at the Frascati National Laboratories. The physics case for an e+e- collider running at high luminosity at the phi resonance energy and also reaching a maximum center of mass energy of 2.5 GeV is discussed, together with the specific aspects of a very high luminosity tau-charm factory. Subjects connected to Kaon decay physics are not discussed here, being part of another INFN Roadmap working group. The significance of the project and the impact on INFN are also discussed.     Physics with the KLOE-2 experiment at the upgraded DAϕ\phiNE

    Investigation at a ϕ\phi--factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta^\prime mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector.
