Superconducting Vortices and Elliptical Ferromagnetic Textures
In this article an analytical and numerical study of superconducting thin
film with ferromagnetic textures of elliptical geometries in close proximity is
presented. The screening currents induced in the superconductor due to the
magnetic texture are calculated. Close to the superconducting transition
temperature the spontaneous creation of superconducting vortices becomes
energy favorable depending on the value of the magnetization and the
geometrical quantities of the magnetic texture. The creation of vortices by
elliptic dots is more energy favorable than those created by circular ones. The
superconductor covered by elliptic dots array exhibits anisotropic transport

Constitutive behavior of as-cast A356
The constitutive behavior of aluminum alloy A356 in the as-cast condition has
been characterized using compression tests performed over a wide range of
deformation temperatures (30-500{\deg}C) and strain rates (\approx0.1-10 /s).
This work is intended to support the development of process models for a wide
range of conditions including those relevant to casting, forging and machining.
The flow stress behavior as a function of temperature and strain rate has been
fit to a modified Johnson-Cook and extended Ludwik-Hollomon expression. The
data has also been assessed with both the strain-independent Kocks-Mecking and
Zener-Hollomon frameworks. The predicted plastic flow stress for each
expression are compared. The results indicate that the extended Ludwik-Hollomon
is best suited to describe small strain conditions (stage III hardening), while
the Kocks-Mecking is best employed for large strain (stage IV). At elevated
temperatures, it was found that the Zener-Hollomon model provides the best
prediction of flow stress.Comment: 34 pages, 12 figure
First Observation of Coherent Production in Neutrino Nucleus Interactions with 2 GeV
The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has amassed the largest sample to date
of s produced in neutral current (NC) neutrino-nucleus interactions at
low energy. This paper reports a measurement of the momentum distribution of
s produced in mineral oil (CH) and the first observation of coherent
production below 2 GeV. In the forward direction, the yield of events
observed above the expectation for resonant production is attributed primarily
to coherent production off carbon, but may also include a small contribution
from diffractive production on hydrogen. Integrated over the MiniBooNE neutrino
flux, the sum of the NC coherent and diffractive modes is found to be (19.5
1.1 (stat) 2.5 (sys))% of all exclusive NC production at
MiniBooNE. These measurements are of immediate utility because they quantify an
important background to MiniBooNE's search for

Largeâscale collaboration in ENIGMAâEEG: A perspective on the metaâanalytic approach to link neurological and psychiatric liability genes to electrophysiological brain activity.
Background and purpose The ENIGMA-EEG working group was established to enable large-scale international collaborations among cohorts that investigate the genetics of brain function measured with electroencephalography (EEG). In this perspective, we will discuss why analyzing the genetics of functional brain activity may be crucial for understanding how neurological and psychiatric liability genes affect the brain. Methods We summarize how we have performed our currently largest genome-wide association study of oscillatory brain activity in EEG recordings by meta-analyzing the results across five participating cohorts, resulting in the first genome-wide significant hits for oscillatory brain function located in/near genes that were previously associated with psychiatric disorders. We describe how we have tackled methodological issues surrounding genetic meta-analysis of EEG features. We discuss the importance of harmonizing EEG signal processing, cleaning, and feature extraction. Finally, we explain our selection of EEG features currently being investigated, including the temporal dynamics of oscillations and the connectivity network based on synchronization of oscillations. Results We present data that show how to perform systematic quality control and evaluate how choices in reference electrode and montage affect individual differences in EEG parameters. Conclusion The long list of potential challenges to our large-scale meta-analytic approach requires extensive effort and organization between participating cohorts; however, our perspective shows that these challenges are surmountable. Our perspective argues that elucidating the genetic of EEG oscillatory activity is a worthwhile effort in order to elucidate the pathway from gene to disease liability
Clinical features and outcomes of tuberculosis in transplant recipients as compared with the general population: a retrospective matched cohort study
AbstractThere are no previous studies comparing tuberculosis in transplant recipients (TRs) with other hosts. We compared the characteristics and outcomes of tuberculosis in TRs and patients from the general population. Twenty-two TRs who developed tuberculosis from 1996 through 2010 at a tertiary hospital were included. Each TR was matched by age, gender and year of diagnosis with four controls selected from among non-TR non-human immunodeficiency virus patients with tuberculosis. TRs (21 patients, 96%) had more factors predisposing to tuberculosis than non-TRs (33, 38%) (p <0.001). Pulmonary tuberculosis was more common in non-TRs (77 (88%) vs. 12 TRs (55%); p 0.001); disseminated tuberculosis was more frequent in TRs (five (23%) vs. four non-TRs (5%); p 0.005). Time from clinical suspicion of tuberculosis to definitive diagnosis was longer in TRs (median of 14 days) than in non-TRs (median of 0 days) (p <0.001), and invasive procedures were more often required (12 (55%) TRs and 15 (17%) non-TRs, respectively; p 0.001). Tuberculosis was diagnosed post-mortem in three TRs (14%) and in no non-TRs (p <0.001). Rates of toxicity associated with antituberculous therapy were 38% in TRs (six patients) and 10% (seven patients) in non-TRs (p 0.014). Tuberculosis-related mortality rates in TRs and non-TRs were 18% and 6%, respectively (p 0.057). The adjusted Cox regression analysis showed that the only predictor of tuberculosis-related mortality was a higher number of organs with tuberculosis involvement (adjusted hazard ratio 8.6; 95% CI 1.2â63). In conclusion, manifestations of tuberculosis in TRs differ from those in normal hosts. Post-transplant tuberculosis resists timely diagnosis, and is associated with a higher risk of death before a diagnosis can be made
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and related phenotypes: polygenic risk scores in population-based and case-control cohorts
Background Genetic factors influence chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk, but the individual variants
that have been identified have small effects. We hypothesised that a polygenic risk score using additional variants
would predict COPD and associated phenotypes.
Methods We constructed a polygenic risk score using a genome-wide association study of lung function (FEV1 and
FEV1/forced vital capacity [FVC]) from the UK Biobank and SpiroMeta. We tested this polygenic risk score in nine
cohorts of multiple ethnicities for an association with moderate-to-severe COPD (defined as FEV1/FVC <0·7 and FEV1
<80% of predicted). Associations were tested using logistic regression models, adjusting for age, sex, height, smoking
pack-years, and principal components of genetic ancestry. We assessed predictive performance of models by area
under the curve. In a subset of studies, we also studied quantitative and qualitative CT imaging phenotypes that
reflect parenchymal and airway pathology, and patterns of reduced lung growth.
Findings The polygenic risk score was associated with COPD in European (odds ratio [OR] per SD 1·81
[95% CI 1·74â1·88] and non-European (1·42 [1·34â1·51]) populations. Compared with the first decile, the tenth decile
of the polygenic risk score was associated with COPD, with an OR of 7·99 (6·56â9·72) in European ancestry and
4·83 (3·45â6·77) in non-European ancestry cohorts. The polygenic risk score was superior to previously described
genetic risk scores and, when combined with clinical risk factors (ie, age, sex, and smoking pack-years), showed
improved prediction for COPD compared with a model comprising clinical risk factors alone (AUC 0·80 [0·79â0·81]
vs 0·76 [0·75â0·76]). The polygenic risk score was associated with CT imaging phenotypes, including wall area
percent, quantitative and qualitative measures of emphysema, local histogram emphysema patterns, and destructive
emphysema subtypes. The polygenic risk score was associated with a reduced lung growth pattern.
Interpretation A risk score comprised of genetic variants can identify a small subset of individuals at markedly
increased risk for moderate-to-severe COPD, emphysema subtyp
Short-term binge drinking, marijuana, and recreational drug use trajectories in a prospective cohort of people living with HIV at the start of COVID-19 mitigation efforts in the United States
Background: At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, HIV experts suggested that an increase in mental health diagnoses and substance use among people living with HIV (PLHIV) may be an unintended consequence of COVID-19 mitigation efforts (e.g., limiting social contact). We evaluated short-term trajectories in binge drinking, marijuana, and recreational drug use in a prospective cohort of PLHIV. Methods: Data (N = 2121 PLHIV) consist of survey responses on substance use behaviors from two pre-COVID-19 (October 2018-September 2019) and one COVID-19-era (April 2020-September 2020) timepoints within the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). We conducted group-based trajectory models, triangulated with generalized linear mixed models, to assess changes in binge drinking, daily marijuana use, and recreational drug use at the start of the pandemic. Controlling for age and race/ethnicity, we tested whether trajectories differed by sex and early-pandemic depressive symptoms, loneliness, and social support. Results: Group-based trajectory models yielded two trajectory groups for binge drinking (none vs. any), marijuana (none/infrequent vs. daily), and recreational drug use (none vs. any). Binge drinking and recreational drug use decreased at the beginning of the pandemic. Generalized linear mixed model supported these trends. Consistent with prior research, male sex and having depressive symptoms early pandemic were positively associated with each substance use outcomes. Social support was inversely associated with recreational drug use. Conclusions: Contrary to hypotheses, problematic substance use behaviors decreased from pre-pandemic to the post-pandemic follow-up in our sample of PLHIV. Ongoing surveillance is needed to assess whether this pattern persists as the pandemic continues
