Studies on the flight medical aspects of the German Lufthansa non-stop route from Frankfurt to Rio de Janeiro, part 1
The problem of crew size for regularly scheduled flights between Frankfurt and Rio de Janeiro is discussed. Factors affecting crew performance are examined, comparisons are drawn to regulations of other countries and crew questionnaires and tests are presented
Biomolecular condensation of the microtubule-associated protein tau.
Cells contain multiple compartments dedicated to the regulation and control of biochemical reactions. Cellular compartments that are not surrounded by membranes can rapidly form and dissolve in response to changes in the cellular environment. The physicochemical processes that underlie the formation of non-membrane-bound compartments in vivo are connected to liquid-liquid phase separation of proteins and nucleic acids in vitro. Recent evidence suggests that the protein tau, which plays an important role in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, phase separates in solution, forms tau phases with microtubules, and associates with phase-separated RNA-binding protein granules in cells. Here we review the experimental evidence that supports the ability of tau to phase separate in solution and form biomolecular condensates in cells. As for other disease-relevant proteins, the physiological and pathological functions of tau are tightly connected - through loss of normal function or gain of toxic function - and we therefore discuss how tau phase separation plays a role for both, and with respect to different cellular functions of tau
Multiprocessor Out-of-Core FFTs with Distributed Memory and Parallel Disks
This paper extends an earlier out-of-core Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method for a uniprocessor with the Parallel Disk Model (PDM) to use multiple processors. Four out-of-core multiprocessor methods are examined. Operationally, these methods differ in the size of mini-butterfly computed in memory and how the data are organized on the disks and in the distributed memory of the multiprocessor. The methods also perform differing amounts of I/O and communication. Two of them have the remarkable property that even though they are computing the FFT on a multiprocessor, all interprocessor communication occurs outside the mini-butterfly computations. Performance results on a small workstation cluster indicate that except for unusual combinations of problem size and memory size, the methods that do not perform interprocessor communication during the mini-butterfly computations require approximately 86% of the time of those that do. Moreover, the faster methods are much easier to implement
Rationale for a Stronger Disposition of Chardonnay Wines for Stuck and Sluggish Fermentation
The aim of this study was to identify and evaluate factors that contribute to fermentation problems inChardonnay, since this variety is reported to have frequent problems. Analytical methods included gaschromatography mass spectrometry, as well as atomic absorption spectroscopy and FT-MIR spectroscopy.Chardonnay, Pinot blanc, Pinot noir and Pinot noir précoce were screened to relate observations to specificvarietal properties. The results show a significant distinction in the amino acid profile of Chardonnay, which can be correlated with sluggish fermentation. A comparison between the fatty acid profile ofChardonnay and Pinot blanc reveals that Chardonnay contains more toxic compounds, which inhibityeast metabolism. Mineral supply and potential metal toxicity were also analysed. The concentrationsof iron, copper, magnesium, zinc and manganese show significant variations among the grape varieties. In conclusion, the possible causes for stuck fermentation in Chardonnay could be more related more tovariety than to oenological decisions
A Mixed-Methods Exploration of Stereotype Threat in Middle Childhood
The three studies presented in this dissertation were designed to develop a mixed-methods foundation for the extension of stereotype threat research to a middle childhood (ages 6-11; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012) population. The first paper systematically reviews existing research on stereotype threat among children to evaluate evidence that stereotype threat affects the learning and performance of children in middle childhood and to compare and contrast features of stereotype threat in children with features of the phenomenon identified in research involving older populations. The second paper focuses on two constructs identified in the systematic review as potential buffers of stereotype threat in middle childhood: social support and school belonging. Because the study of stereotype threat inherently involves comparison of students belonging to different social groups, measures of constructs related to stereotype threat must support accurate cross-group comparisons. The purpose of the second paper is to determine whether an existing measurement tool assessing school belonging and social support (the Elementary School Success Profile for Children) performs equally for both Black/African American and White children, and can be used to make valid cross-group comparisons on levels of these constructs. Although Paper 2 contributes to solving some of the measurement issues related to stereotype threat in middle childhood by validating a measure of constructs believed to buffer stereotype threat, no direct measure of stereotype threat currently exists. Development of such a measure would require exploratory qualitative work to learn more about the nature of stereotype threat in middle childhood. The third paper of this dissertation uses vignette methodology to explore how children in the target age group perceive and experience stereotype threat. Children responded to six vignettes modeling Shapiro and Neuberg's Multithreat Framework (2007), discussing their thoughts on the ostensibly stereotype threatening situations as well as their perceptions of conditions contributing to threats and the consequences associated with threat experiences. Paper 3 presents children's perspectives on stereotype threat in their own words, while framing the responses in the contexts of existing stereotype threat research and knowledge of child development.Doctor of Philosoph

It has been replaced by an intensive landscape, which removes the basis for the lifes of animals and plants. Therefore today the city has to be considered to be a place for evolution of nature. This applies especially to parks, gardens and other green areas. For „Social“ Garden Architecture the city is an ecological refuge.
But what has the ecological movement to do with garden art?
The conservation of nature stays in the foreground. That is the common good of the people. What the people today concern more than ever before is the care for the preservation of nature, but also the fear of loss. By men and his extremely exploitation of landscape, by the agricultural industry,
Every bigger park should have its nature reservate.

Spectral Analysis of the Chandra Comet Survey
We present results of the analysis of cometary X-ray spectra with an extended
version of our charge exchange emission model (Bodewits et al. 2006). We have
applied this model to the sample of 8 comets thus far observed with the Chandra
X-ray observatory and ACIS spectrometer in the 300-1000 eV range. The surveyed
comets are C/1999 S4 (LINEAR), C/1999 T1 (McNaught-Hartley), C/2000 WM1
(LINEAR), 153P/2002 (Ikeya-Zhang), 2P/2003 (Encke), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), 9P/2005
(Tempel 1) and 73P/2006-B (Schwassmann-Wachmann 3) and the observations include
a broad variety of comets, solar wind environments and observational
conditions. The interaction model is based on state selective, velocity
dependent charge exchange cross sections and is used to explore how cometary
X-ray emission depend on cometary, observational and solar wind
characteristics. It is further demonstrated that cometary X-ray spectra mainly
reflect the state of the local solar wind. The current sample of Chandra
observations was fit using the constrains of the charge exchange model, and
relative solar wind abundances were derived from the X-ray spectra. Our
analysis showed that spectral differences can be ascribed to different solar
wind states, as such identifying comets interacting with (I) fast, cold wind,
(II), slow, warm wind and (III) disturbed, fast, hot winds associated with
interplanetary coronal mass ejections. We furthermore predict the existence of
a fourth spectral class, associated with the cool, fast high latitude wind.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, and 7 Tables; accepted A&A (Due to space
